Governor

Governor’s personal log: It’s my birthday… something I try to ignore, yet this one is special, at least to those around me. It’s been twenty-five years since the attack on the planet that, till this day, has altered life as we know it. I was taught that life was fleeting and fragile, no one ever thought, until recently, to apply that logic to this or any other planet. Shahrazad was here long before I was born and hopefully will out live me by centuries, however it, like myself, has suffered irreparable damage. At last count fifteen hundred species of plant and animal life have vanished from this world. While the sun rises every morning and sets in the evening the changes, while subtle, are noticeable, to me personally, the absence of the two large trees on the eastern end of the island is a reminder of things as they use to be. While the sun rises every morning it is no longer framed by those two magnificent trees. They’ve been replaced but it’ll take decades till they reach the size of their predecessors and although being the exact species and placed in the exact location as before they will never offer the view that their predecessors did. In that mode of thinking however, they might actually, in time produce an even more spectacular view. Its nature who knows for sure, not I.

“Sorry to interrupt but Princess Eliana’s is here and well she’s a bit out of sorts.”

I move to the window, my back to the door and ask Eliana to come in. Since my injury this is my most vulnerable direction. Although I no longer have ‘eyes in the back of my head’ my other senses have improved markedly, most notably my hearing and sense of smell, although my ‘normal vision’ is a sharp as ever… the door opens I hear footsteps approaching and the smell of the perfume Eliana normally wears. Its time, I turn to find her exactly one half meter from my desk.

“You’re improving Cassie at first you were three times the distance and just to mess with you I adjusted my speed ever so slightly. I swear one day my hand will rest on your shoulder without you knowing it. Now that we’ve dispensed with this there is another more pressing issue I wish to discuss with you.”

“And that would be?”

“I don’t mind you dispatching Illusion to resolve the conflict in the ‘bad lands’ region but look at this.”

She firmly places a tablet on the table; on it is a news story and images of what they believe are of Illusion in high orbit around the major population center.

“Cassie what the hell was KO thinking blasting into orbit uncloaked. You realize those images are flooding the information network. Your ‘secret’ weapon is no longer a secret.”

“Computer open file theta one seventy seven display images one eighteen through one thirty. Eliana there have been things around here that were on a ‘need to know basis’ I’m letting you in on one of those now.”

The display activates and the true images of Illusion and group are displayed. Eliana takes in the information and before she can speak…

“Its formal name is the ‘Grand Illusion’ and aptly so… you are now among a hand full of people who know what that ship actually looks like. But looks are all you’re going to get, I can sense you wanting all the data and as long as I’m alive that need to know will still stay a need.”

“Cassie that’s a polite way of saying NO, you’ve become quite the diplomat whether you like it or not.”

“Governor sorry to interrupt, we are receiving priority one communications from Captain Lexshu aboard the Defiance.”

“I’m on my way.”

“Eliana if you will excuse me we’ll continue this conversation later.”

With that I headed down the hall to the communications section Sari was waiting as I entered.

“Sorry to pull you out of there, but I tried to establish communications and the system required your access code to continue. As far as I know the last report from Independence said the training cruise was proceeding normally, this communication from Defiance caught me completely off guard.”

“It’s okay Sari I believe I know what the message entails only one way to find out thou.”

Moving to the image scanner the computer scanned Cassie’s face and with a few keystrokes the message was displayed.

“Good morning Cassandra and a very happy birthday to you.”

The message faded and a live feed replaced it… aboard the Defiance the bridge was lit by battle lanterns and a familiar voice filled the room.

“Tactical, distance to target?”

“One hundred and fifty thousand kilometers, Captain.”

“Do we have a lock?”

“Lock established ready to fire.”

“Fire main pulse cannons.”

The sound of weapons discharge is heard, then.

“Tactical. Damage report.”

“We are undamaged, scans report four hits amidships one to the stern and three to the bridge of our target.”

“Defiance, Independence here, the computer reports you did sufficient damage in your first attack to render the ship unable to continue… Congratulations Cadet Lynn… Kenesh out.”

The lighting returns to normal and the center seat turns toward the video device the person sitting in the seat address Cassandra directly.

“Happy birthday sis… sending you this feed was well the ‘Captain’s’ idea I’ve never been so nervous in my life thou… the added pressure of you watching…”

“Was good for you… every battle will be different remember that and when you think your mind is clear something will always try to cloud it... you did well cadet, now I’d like my seat back.”

Rising from the seat and stepping to the side the cadet made way for the Captain of the ship to take charge once again.

“What have you heard of KO’s exploits?”

“Eliana was through here right before you called; her mission was successful and another ‘false’ set of images now exists. KO was rendezvousing with Dai and they are heading to Demos, the miners are being harassed again. Dai made mention of the fact this time the harassment would be ‘put to an end’. My fear is she and KO will finish that centuries old disagreement in a most permanent manor.”

“I see; we are done with the training cruise should Kenesh and I go ‘baby sit’ them?”

“I don’t want to arm chair from here. What I suggest is that you ‘swing wide’ on your return so as you happen to be with in ‘intercepting range’ when KO arrives at Demos just in case.”

“I understand and we’ll just mosey over that a way. We’ll see you in seventy two hours either way and have that ‘party’ I promised… you heard from your wayward parents by any chance?”

“Yeah mom rolled me out of bed at a very unorthodox hour this morning. She and dad have finished exploring section forty-two seventy and are making a stop on the way back. Mom seemed pretty hyped and dad wants to feel ‘real’ gravity beneath his feet once again. They being gone almost eight months I believe dad is at his limit on space travel… I think they’ll be here for quite sometime. However mom was a vague as ever on arrival time and this mystery stop on the way back… well its not like we don’t know where they are that ‘guard’ fleet they travel with was an excellent idea. Thank you.”

“We’ll be in touch Defiance out.”

*********
*“Kenesh you heard our conversation?”

“That I did Plakia ‘mosey over there’? You’ve been watching too many frontier shows again.”

“Sending course to you shall we mosey on?”

“Course received ready to mosey when you are partner.”

“Engage.”*

“Illusion ships log KO recording: Mission to the badlands was successful, for the time being, it’s my opinion that although we put down the rebellion, due to the politics involved, we are going to have to return one day and…”

“Politics captain, you’re just upset you weren’t able to ‘crush them like ants’ I believe that’s what I heard from you.”

Lyra I understand you are the ships conscious but you realize we never fired the main battery I was hoping for a bit more from us than just showing up…”

“Captain might I remind you that we disabled sixty ships with our mines and caused very little collateral damage. I know you always want a skirmish but might I remind you the last ‘skirmish’ you placed us in ended up with this ship in space dock for three weeks.”

“Well Leo whose fault was it that? The enemy fleet, hiding inter dimensionally, wasn’t discovered until their first volley slammed into us? And who was it that counter attacked wiping them from this universe? Hm?”

Sarah sat taking in the current discussion between KO and the ships. Her appointment as first officer from navigator had just been approved before they set sail on this current mission. ‘Discussions’ like this weren’t any thing new to her, it was that this time she could say her peace, and was about to do so when Orion chimed in.

“Discovery will rendezvous in one point five hours, unless we slow, seeing we are forty-five minutes from orbit around Demos.”

“Fine, slow us down send Dai greetings and move the rendezvous point to the gate at sector one hundred Demos standard star chart. Now where were we, oh yes my actions…”

“KO sit down and relax, I know that the badlands council left a markedly bad taste in your mouth, remember Demos is an ALLY try not to start something that requires more force than necessary to finish.”

KO glanced over to where Sarah was seated, her comments, while in line, were also surprising to KO. The crewing this ship had always been a problem, given the fact that, in reality this ship didn’t need a crew as compared to the rest of the fleet. Those aboard were mostly ‘caretakers’. Something that all who served knew well. KO’s successes were becoming legendary; that was last thing KO wanted to be known as, a legend…

“Ten years we’ve been in continuous service, before then we only launched as needed. You would think peace could last centuries not just a few dozen years…”

“Captain, say this ‘hundred year’ peace you hope for arrives what would you do with yourself?”

KO leaned back in the seat stared at the ceiling and closed her eyes.

“Personal log: Cassandra Lynn recording: A birthday, I don’t want to acknowledge… longevity; Abh’s have the corner on that. Scholar and her followers would come in a close second. On this world the average lifespan, excluding the aforementioned species, is approximately one hundred and thirty years give or take. Dear friends who are not in the longevity group are leaving this realm for the next at an alarming rate. The most recent and the one that has caused me the greatest sadness was Paveryua’s passing. He was like an uncle to me, I learned so much from him, and now I have memories that I hope I’ll keep to my dying day. It was a simple service his companion read his favorite poem and he lies next to Samson on the hill overlooking the falls. She’s remained here, her knowledge, their knowledge, still influences this world. Lily, Robert and Risch converse with her often yet I also know someday she too will be just a memory… Enough of this; now for the real reason behind this entry; Erin and Li have named their successors, their daughters, no surprise there, yet the first ‘new’ council meeting was, well, chaos for about five minutes. It took them that long to officially settle who was leading and who was following. Erin’s daughter Gwen shall lead and Li’s daughter Tao would provide council. Li’s father Kim had passed a few years earlier it was then we realized just how long that group lived. Jasmine’s exam found him to be almost two hundred years old and it was said his was a short lived blood line? I’ve always wondered how old Scholar was and yet I dare not inquire. I’ve just received birthday greetings from the council… Argh!”

“Planetary survey log: Noel Ekuryua recording: It’s taken fifteen years but at last the guardians’ complex is finally secured. After the initial impact there was fear that the geothermal reactors would explode but, they were designed to withstand a seismic event ten times the magnitude of the impact to the planet. However the balance of the complex did not far as well. Numerous shifts in the underground layers caused several passages to be come inaccessible. In time we’ve cleared and reinforced the affected areas. We found a couple of ‘secret’ passages. With this section complete we now have access to the complex as we had before the event. Actually I must say better access as we have improved corridors and added site to surface lifts along the way. I guess the best example I can give is my present location on the far side, lower chamber, which would normally be a one day hike, it is now accessible in three hours from the surface.”

My creunoc has just informed me its Cassie’s birthday. I was looking for a good excuse to return to the surface and with the wealth of information the team and I have gathered on this trip, a little sunshine might do me good. Although the last time I went to the surface, six weeks ago, it rained the entire time I was there. I guess I should spend sometime with my grand daughters this time, Sari who takes after her father and Sobbash; and Sarah who without a doubt is my grand daughter. Sari is Cassandra’s assistant and Sarah gets the pleasure of keeping reins on KO. I wonder where KO and company are. The creunoc shows the ship is on assignment which means they are on a need to know mission. Bet you I’ll know before long thou I do have an inside information source.

*********
Personal log: Sobbash speaking: Cassandra’s birthday eh? Bet she wants to go off and hide and if she remembers there is a way for her to do just that. After her recovery and it was confirmed that she’d be unable to interface with AI units, Paveryua converted a high speed cruiser to be controlled ‘manually’, granted she’d need a crew of two trained to pilot a ship manually but all she would have to do is ask. I’d be happy to go with her. Seelnay and Greta are also qualified to pilot a ship of that class. Poor Cassie she never could handle birthdays…

I’ve just submitted the annual agriculture report. We will for the forth year running have a surplus, something I though at first we’d never accomplish. Right after the event there were those who decided to try to ‘starve’ us into submission. That is when I let Cassie start running the politics of the planet and I returned to what Samson and I had hoped would be our ‘golden years’; agriculture. Finding suitable places to start growing our own crops once again was a daunting task. The master farm resides on the western edge of the continent an area untouched by the dust storm that occurred after the event. Water was piped in and crops established, when our ‘enemies’; a note here; enemy, in this usage means those who do not want conquest, just the secrets we hold dear and were willing to trade food for them.

At first we had to go exploring for plants capable of surviving on this planet, once we found sources we sent very heavily escorted transports to gather the materials we needed. I have to admit most places were happy to take payment for their products, although there were those who had special ingredients that had to be persuaded at the end of a starship to sell their products to us. Something Cassie decided on her own, no doubt her mother’s influence tempered by her father’s force as a last resort doctrine. I’ve also received word I’m to become a grandparent, again? Noel will find out once she gets to the surface I for one will not disturb her work, done that before and have had my head politely handed to me for it.

“Merchant group log: Jinto Lynn recording: I know when I met Lafiel that space was her favorite place, it’s genetic and undeniable. However we’ve been away long enough; I long for gravity, my own bed and a shower that actually gets one clean. Lafiel on the other hand would probably stay out here till she passes, but, lately; I get the feeling that the feeling of grass upon ones feet might be drawing her back home. Our hold overflows, to the point we’ve placed some of our wares aboard the ‘escort’ fleet. ‘Thank you Plakia’ for convincing Lafiel that venturing off alone was not as wise of a move as she thought it was. We have one stop before we arrive at Shahrazad a destination Lafiel is keeping close to her vest so to speak. I figure we’ll arrive in about three days depending on this stop Lafiel makes.”

*********
Cadet duty usually entails the shifts no one else wants. Shawn Lynn sits quietly as the ship readies itself for another day. Monitoring the sensor array for the last six hours has left him feeling rather bored; nothing has happened and after his brief command experience this sitting quietly was…

The display lights up, a distress beacon has been activated and a call to the watch commander brings Plakia to the bridge.

“Captain it’s at the very edge of scanner range. We are approaching but our present course will not intercept them.”

Looking at the display and overlaying friendly ships in the area Plakia comes to the following conclusion.

Discovery and Illusion are the closest vessels however they have a mission critical time involved. Communications raise Discovery and see if they’ve seen this beacon? Cadet, open a scrambled link to Independence I want to speak to the Captain. Chief, wake the ship up, it’s going to be an interesting morning.”

The lighting changes from dimly lit to moderately bright and the accompanying chiming of the alert rings throughout the ship.

“Captain; Captain Lexshu of the Discovery on the link, six second delay, switching to main viewer now.”

Dai, looking rather frazzled appears on the display, Plakia inquires if they have seen the beacon.

“We’ve been passively scanning the local area, long range scanners are off line, give me a few and I’ll bring them up.”

“Dai where’s KO? Illusion should have picked up this by now.”

“Plakia, KO’s gone silent; I can’t go any further, things here are much worse than we were led to believe.”

*“What the hell? I just got woke up and tapped in. You’ve gone to alert level three, KO’s gone dark, Dai’s scanning locally and this distress beacon… Dang can’t grab a decent nap any more without all hell breaking loose?”*

“Plakia your beacon is at… I’ll send co-ordinates also there is an audio message very faint saying they are a Zon transport that’s been attacked.”

*“Kenesh go over what Dai just sent and plot an intercept course.”
“On it, you’re going to contact the Zon?”
“Yeah we need to know if that’s one of theirs and if it’s alone or part of a convoy.”*

“Plakia while you’re at it let Cassie know we may have stepped into it… Understand?”

“Message received Defiance out.”

*"Plakia this doesn’t feel right… that distress beacon if we go after it we’ll be pretty far from Demos, in fact should all hell break loose … you read me partner?”
“Loud and clear… call Cassie get her opinion and we’ll move toward the beacon but.”
“Be ready to head to ‘Dodge’ and rout the bad guys eh?”
And you complain about me watching too many frontier shows, ha.”*

*********
Cassandra Lynn sat looking out the window; she had just received news from the Abh ambassador concerning a passing within one of the royal families and an invite to attend the ‘service’. She was about to open a link when Sari entered the room tablet in hand.

“Governor you better have a look at this.”

She handed the table to Cassie she scanned it then reached for the tablet on her desk handed it to Sari and said.

“When it rains it pours around here doesn’t it?”

Sari read the message and…

“Cassie I’m so sorry… what can I do to…”

“Encrypt that and send it along… as far as what KO stepped into; there are four of our finest commanders out there, give them free rein without starting an intergalactic incident. Also I want the Zon ambassador here at her earliest convenience. This ship, it doesn’t sit well with me, not with the way the Zon have lately escorted everything to the max.”

Sari left, Cassie opened a comm. link and said.

“Dawn where are you?”

“In my office Cassie what’s up?”

“Where is the senior staff?”

“Donald, Risch and Lily are at the space dock… Robert has just finished the test firing of the Gen. seven engines it was a success. Sobbash is with Atosuryua going over the improvements to the Samson. Captain Pratt, Greta and Seelnay are about three hours from space dock on the Dorin and Noel has emerged from her second home… why do you ask?”

“Something’s not right in the Demos system I want to bring the planetary defense system up a couple of notches and was inquiring where everyone was?”

“Well you should be aware Tao is in my office she’s taken a great interest in this conversation and by her actions I do believe you’ll be seeing her shortly.”

“Fine that saves me another call... When everyone is home I want a meeting and include Eliana in it.”

“By your command.”

“Remind me to settle this complex of yours concerning my orders eh?”

*********
“Discovery’s engineers log Arisa recording: space is full of surprises always has been always will be. However couple space with intelligent life forms sharing the same plane and you get unexpected surprises. The attack on this ship three hours ago would be one of those unexpected surprises. We had just arrived at the gate and were uncloaked when a salvo of class five energy weapons bounced off our shields. Besides minor damage and a few rattled nerves we survived the attack. Illusion took off in pursuit of the attacker. We’ve remained here waiting however; three hours and knowing KO like I do something’s not right.”

*“Bridge, engineering have we heard anything from KO?”
“Arisa, its Ariel, Dai’s on the link with Defiance, but to answer your question nothing from KO and no obvious sensor returns as well.”
“Tell the Captain we’re ready here, so is the ship, I’ll go on your word.”
“Understood, bridge out.”*

*********
You could say I’ve known Lafiel all my life, with the small exception of those first sixteen years we were apart growing up. When you been with someone as long as we have you get to know their mood at a glance. Lafiel has always had a habit of keeping in the know, every time we enter a system she scans the information network just to get a feel for what’s going on. This morning, however, she’s found something that has her quite upset. I’m about to inquire when…

“Jinto, come to me, please.”

I approach Lafiel and she pulls me into her arms, rests her head on my shoulder and quietly sobs.

“Hold me tight Jinto, like you’ll never let me go.”

I pull Lafiel to me and turn us ever so slightly, I can now view what she was reading, and it is a message from Cassandra. Ramaj has passed away… even at top speed we can’t make the service… but that’s not what has Lafiel upset, the favorite grand daughter has lost her grandmother. Lafiel’s history of suppressed emotions dates back to a time when we first met. At that time a tear in public was not allowed. She quietly shed a tear for me at Lobnas, but when Charles and Samson died she wept openly for almost a day. My shoulder is wet and my love is trembling in my arms, I too feel sad at this news but I was never as close as Lafiel was to Ramaj. We move to the chairs in the room and I console her for the next hour. We still have one stop before we reach Shahrazad; at least I think we do.

*********
“Multi-phase light weapons do not have that kind of range. Leo check your findings again.”

“Double checked Captain, those weapons were fired from the orbit of the sixth planet and the device that carried those weapons has vanished from the system… or their cloak is far superior to ours… either way I can’t find them… suggest we return to the rendezvous point.”

“Captain you should also know allied communications are being received between Discovery, Defiance and Independence.”

Orion, show me the position of those ships.”

The main viewer shows Discovery at the gate, Defiance and Independence are heading in Illusion’s general direction. But how does Plakia or Kenesh know where they are?

Orion break comm. blackout, get those three on a secure scrambled link. Just what in the world are they doing out here?”

*********
*“Lost the beacon”
“What do you mean lost it?”
“Its gone Plakia like it was shut off.”
“Captain! Energy reading on the bow range …”
“Shields to maximum, reverse course, all ahead emergency, Kenesh, do you copy?”
“In the turn you’re being targeted.”
“Helm evasive, Dai relay to base we’re under attack. KO if you can hear us we need you NOW.”*

*********
“I have the source of the energy reading it’s out of our firing range.”

“Then put it in range Leo, go, fire when locked.”

“Link secure, go ahead Captain”

“Calvary’s on the way keep ducking and dodging till we get there.”

“They got a lock on Defiance.”

“How close are we?”

“Still out of range another minute unless we pulverize the moon ahead.”

“Fire a spread of a dozen mines between Defiance and the energy reading NOW.”

“Mines away they’ll cross the course in five, four, three, two…”

Defiance hard a starboard now”

“Energy weapon discharge, exactly like the one that hit Discovery; it’s hit the mines and has missed Defiance.”

“Clear of the moon, target is gone…”

“Continue to its last know position and scan like mad.”

“That’s not going to do any good Captain… the energy reading in that area is so intense you could hide an entire fleet and not be able to see them. The site of the first attack is still not scan able either.”

KO sat back in her chair and looked at the chart then it hit her.

“Given the time between the first and second attacks and they are a straight line between the points, what speed would an object have to be traveling to make it from point A to B?”

“Approximately point three-five of light give or take.”

“Give or take? Explain?”

“Simply put, did they use continuous power, or a thrust and then gravitational pull? If they were coasting expending no energy that would make them almost invisible…”

“Load up five high speed seeking mines and fire them in the general direction of the reverse course of the attack.”

“Mines ready Captain.”

“Launch mines.”

Illusion to group, report status and then we’ll rendezvous at sixty-two by three thirty-six standard Demos chart. That will be our base of operations... I doubt seriously the mines I launched will hit anything but you never know…”

*“KO, Dai, we’re operational proceeding to co-ordinates.”

“KO, Kenesh, we are fine, Plakia has a rupture power coupling, nothing serious. She has local comm. and asked me to send you the following message. ‘One of these days, kemosabe, you are going to be too late and someone is going to get hurt badly’. On a different note, that salvo pattern was so dispersed, do you really figure one ship / location was involved?”

“Why do you figure I launched five mines…? I don’t believe things until I see them and I’ve not seen this one. So a salvo of five equals five targets in my book.”*

*********
*“So she wouldn’t address her tardiness? We get on dry land I’m going to have a chat with her and don’t try to stop me Kenesh.”

“Won’t stop you but I wanna watch just for research purposes.”

“Research you say, ha you’ve not changed one bit have you.”

“Wouldn’t be fun if I had… I’m off your port beam you got the power cable squared away yet?”

“Working on it, remind me when we get back to have Robert redesign this one as he has the starboard couplings. This ship and I are both ready for a refit.”

“So you say… So you say.”*

*********
“Personal log, Noel Ekuryua recording: I’m beginning to wander if I should stay below the surface? Last time I was here it rained constantly and quit three hours after I went back to the underground city. This time I’ve hardly seen the sky and I’m being called to an emergency meeting… I’ve found out one thing in my short time on the surface… Lily and Robert have created yet another life form, as if twins weren’t enough for them, and two decades later. I’m aghast and excited as well then again maybe I need to stay on the surface more…”

A familiar yet in the same moment unfamiliar walk to the command center is what greets me. Structures remain the same but the landscape since the event differs greatly from what was there all those years ago. Lafiel managed to reestablish the gardens but, actually I find these more appealing than the original however maybe I’ve spent too much time away from here. A shuttle docks below my position and its passengers are leaving. I recognize all of them especially the one who’s having a bit of trouble walking up from the docks. Standing at the top of the steps, hands on my hips, she sees me stops in her tracks and says.

“I guess there will be no debating this time, you’re going to be a grandmother again and soon I hope.”

With her are Sobbash, Captain Pratt, Seelnay, Greta, Robert and my beloved Risch who is avoiding my look in his direction. The rest of them pass me by leaving the three of them standing on the platform with me. Sobbash does remind us that Cassie is waiting and not to dawdle… Lily walks towards me; I can barely get my arms around her, and says.

“After the meeting, I know I have a LOT of explaining to do but first, mother can we just go. Cassandra sounded quite urgent in her request.”

Without speaking I got my message across, for now, its time I can see Sobbash and the others entering the center. Lily knows my displeasure at not being notified that will do for now…

*********
Approaching the center I see Eliana at the door she is handing everyone a document the front says ‘open when instructed to’ an unusual request but Cassandra has proven to be an unusual governor. I take my seat look to the front of the room and realize the gravity of the situation. Cassandra and the council are seated at the table Sari is manning the main display Dawn and Eliana join them; Cassandra stands and addresses the gathering.

“Approximately five hours ago Discovery was fired upon by and unknown force, three hours later Defiance was attacked by the same type of weaponry. Both ships suffered ‘minor’ damage and the fleet consisting of Discovery, Defiance, Independence, and Illusion are in the Demos system at the old platform around moon six forty one. During the time of the attacks a beacon activated, this beacon was supposed to be from a Zon transport that was being attacked. I’ve had a lengthy conversation with the Zon ambassador; she’s convinced me that there are no Zon vessels with in five light years of the Demos system.”

“Given Demos proximity to this system and that most of our fleet is out of system, I’m taking the following actions. Illusion’s group will continue to hunt for those responsible. The alliance is aware of these events and has activated the guard fleets around all friendly Gates and Sords. After consulting with the Council the defensive posture of this system is being increased to level five, all leaves are cancelled and those ships of the planetary defense fleet are ordered to stand by status. They’ll be ready to launch on a moments notice. Finally everyone received a document upon your arrival I ask at this time you open said document and read it … this meeting is dismissed.”

Cassie sat down the main display showed the status of all units; one by one the icons became green. I opened the document… reading it I realized not only was Cassie stressing over this but we as a system had lost a friend and champion in Ramaj. Folding the document I stood and headed towards the front. Dawn stopped all who were heading that way by saying.

“Those who need to be somewhere at this moment go, now, those who don’t there will be time after this crisis passes for reflection.”

Her words bit hard but she was correct, Cassandra had her hands full, and a bunch of us expressing our feelings was something she didn’t need… then I cast my eyes skyward and though ‘Lafiel’.

To be continued in: Shadows of the Past.

"Ah! You don't know my name?
Its very simple, Lafiel you shall say.
In return I'd like to call you Jinto."
