Send in the Marines!

Question: Do we know from any sources whether or not boarding actions are common in-universe? I'd imagine they don't just carry those side arms for show but that aside, such that it might be the case are there any marines or otherwise naval (space for you non-traditionalist =p) infantry in the Star Forces or the Alliance militaries?

That's been covered In Seikai no Monshou 1 & 3.
In the past when ship weapons weren't so good and ship weren't so good boarding was a standard tactic. Now that ships and weapons are advanced there's no reason for boarding when ships easily blow up. The weapons are just there's for the options. Just like with Star Trek there are no dedicated marines like many believe. Yet, the Empire has dedicated ground forces. The engineering/weapons crew serve as such if needed as any other since everyone gets the weapons training. It's just not so important as in the past.

Sounds very Abh. Either you can explode it or you dedicate the absolute minimal resources to it. Glad it was covered.

Well, with space technology weapons have to be very powerful especially when shield technology is available, too. A single hit could contain energies large enough to vaporize a major parts of a ship. Realistically, it's not like scifi authors like to portrait it to be where ships can survive dozens of hits. In space one little error, little screw off, and you are dead.

Still, weapons you can use with your hands will always exists and there will always be someone wanting to buy them. I guess for even more advanced level of space faring people these weapons are still needed to deal with criminals/pirates.
