The Mystery of Sol-Eros

Standing on the balcony of the temple Erin, High Priestess of the people on the planet Sol-Eros watches the sunrise. It had been ten sunrises since she sent the ambassador from the Abh Empire packing. “What a foolish and arrogant little man he was. I hope the next representatives of the Empire have a greater understanding of our laws and customs.” The opening of the door behind her took her attention from the sunrise and her impressions of the Abh Ambassador. “Priestess, the council awaits the time for discussion is near.” Li assistant to Erin stands there Erin doesn’t move. “Did you hear me? The time for discussion is near. Don’t keep the council waiting, please.” Erin comes to her senses she dons her day smock, then she and Li leave the temple. Outside it was a day like most had been lately, bright, breezy and warm. The radiation from the sun reflected off her day smock as she and Li headed for the council chamber.

The high council chamber was in the remnants of the ship that had brought them to this planet a little over a thousand years ago. As they entered the chamber grew quite. “You’re late Erin. You’ve kept us waiting. The temperature outside climbs.” Kim, head of the council and Li’s father continues. “It has been ten cycles of the sun since the arrogant one left here, we have yet to discuss how we will greet their next representatives. You Erin, daughter of the great leader Kyle first in line to the eternal leadership have not given this council your thoughts on how to accept the overtures from the next ones.” Erin walks past him and sits in a chair facing the group.

“I’ve come to a decision we will let them be the first to communicate, depending on their sincerity we can then decide if they come to the surface or stay in space.” Kim folds his arms and stares her in the face “Do we address them visually this time or use the standard vocal greeting?” Erin smiles, “Let’s see how we are greeted before we greet them that is my answer to the question.” Kim nods and sits across the room from Erin Li joins him. Erin looks to another person in the room, “Scholar of Science is there any change?” The woman stands and faces Erin, “This season will be the worst on record. Forty percent of those areas that were safe last year will not be this year. Our only hope is for outside intervention, we have exhausted our science, Priestess.” Erin sits back; decisions will have to be made this time. There is no getting around it. “If these Abh are all that we’ve been told of, then they should be able to help.” A moments fear grasps at her, then the cold realization settles in.

The fragile government that Ramaj and Kenesh had formed was beginning to feel stresses from within the royal family. Twice plans had been made to find a successor to the throne and twice the candidates were killed before the contest ended. The present list of available candidates did not have any of the necessary skills learned, to ascend to the Jade throne. However the Grand Council was getting ready to put into motion a plan that would accelerate this learning curve over Ramaj’s objections.

Debeusec entered the office where Ramaj stood. She sensed his entrance and spoke without turning towards him “Well my son, Dustain is almost here, the grand council is planning folly and Lafiel is off to Sol-Eros. This will prove to be a very interesting couple of months.” Debeusec stood their, silent, contemplating Ramaj’s words. It was a couple of minutes before he finally spoke. “Sol-Eros? Now why is Lafiel off to that place? What is her mission?” Ramaj turns to him, a look of surprise on her face. “Since when have you started caring about what that child does? If you want to know, you’re going to have to wait. We have business here that takes importance over what Lafiel does.”

Ramaj turns away from Debeusec. “You should go greet Dustain my son, make sure he’s comfortable and that Dr. Sasoum gives him a through physical. Report back to me when the doctor is finished.” Debeusec leaves the room Ramaj looks out into space, “I hope you’re well rested Lafiel. This mission will take all the skill and knowledge you have.” She turns and leaves the room. She heads for another showdown with the Grand Council.

Sord Vorash cleared they settled into position at the orbital tower that led to the planet. While Ku unloaded the shuttle Seelnay arranged for it’s berthing. “You understand I want this ship kept ready for departure at a moments notice.” The stationmaster nods his head. “I understand ma’am I’ve gotten orders from Admiral Sobbash concerning the care of this ship while it’s here. I’ll do my very best.” Seelnay turns to leave and the stationmaster asks one last question. “How long are you planning on staying this time?”

Walking away she tosses her hands in the air and says, “At a moments notice.” The stationmaster again nods and turns towards the ship. “It will need a check up and refueling, hopefully I’ll have a couple of days to do that in.” Turning back he watches as Seelnay and Ku board the shuttle to the surface and says aloud; “Kids, they never change, they always want everything, yesterday.” Opening his creunoc he calls the maintenance crew to the ship. The sooner they start the sooner she can depart ‘at a moments notice.’

Arriving on the surface they head for Ku’s house. Their luggage stacked on the walk Ku sweeps Seelnay off her feet and carries her through the front door. They stand in the living room embraced and kissing. It’s Seelnay who finally breaks the silence, “Are we going to leave our stuff outside dear?” Ku grins; they walk outside gather their things and take them inside. Ku closes the door and the quiet of the day continues.

Sobbash snaps off the display, this has been the third call from Atosuryua today. She’s had enough. It’s time to become scarce. Her executive officer sits outside her office, a brilliant officer that Admiral Bebaus recommended to her before he left. Sobbash knowing her past gladly invited her into the staff. Now it was time to use her abilities again. “You know where I’ll be. I don’t want to be disturbed unless it’s important.” The executive officer nods, “I’ll keep her at bay; go relax Admiral you look as if you could use the change.” Sobbash smiles and leaves the office.

It was a short walk to the farm. Entering the building she finds a familiar figure already at work. Donning coveralls she joins him. “Any news Sobbash?” She shakes her head. “Just Atosuryua’s continual complaining. I really wish the rebel warships aim had been a little better.” Samson stops turns and towards her. “You never been this upset before she must have really hit a spot this morning.”

Sobbash reaches for a bean plant, she’s ignoring Samson’s statement. Samson stops her hand and holds it. Through the glove he can feel the anger within her. She rises her gaze to his there is a fire in her eyes that he’s seen before. Leaning towards her he places a kiss upon those lips. They are like the rim of a cup filled with steaming hot coffee. She stands there he can feel the anger subside within her. She again reaches for a bean plant and takes it from the tray. She gently places it in the planting tray. He watches her continue to plant beans, diffusing her anger into a constructive effort. He’s very happy they have each other.

“Captain we’ve established contact with the Ambassadors ship. Shall I notify Her Highness and Count Hyde?” Ekuryua sat scanning the space around them. They were in a lack luster chunk of an obscure system that had nothing going for it. “No I’ll go tell them, time to rendezvous?” the answer was three hours; Ekuryua left the bridge and headed for Jinto and Lafiel’s quarters. Approaching the door a conversation could be heard she pushed the door chime.

“Yes who is it?” Lafiel’s voice sounded very annoyed. “It’s Noel we’ve made contact with the Ambassador’s ship.” Lafiel interrupted. “Are you alone?” Noel answered she was, the door suddenly opened and there stood Lafiel dressed, “Come in Noel I‘m not ready for the rest of the crew to see me like this well not yet.” She had the harem girl outfit on minus the top and bottom. The sheer fabric was covering all of her. Noel looked around the room, Jinto was sitting at a table files in his hand reading. “Well you think this will be acceptable on a planet that the residents don’t wear clothes on?” Noel stood staring, her mind usually accepted anything that those two had done in the past, but this was a little over the top, even for her thinking. “Are you comfortable wearing it Lafiel?” Noel leaned back against the closed door it afforded her the support she desperately needed at that moment.

Jinto finished his files, closed and put them on the table, looking at Lafiel he said; “You’ve become quite the exhibitionist lately. However I feel these are repressed feelings from your childhood. Some how I can see you running naked thought the royal living quarters.” She turned and glared at him, “You’re just jealous, you know I’m extremely attractive and you fear having half the planet swoon over me.” She smiled and placed a kiss on his cheek. “Jinto I’m yours remember that will you.”

Noel, still a bit shaken by this display finally decided to add her asked for opinion. “Speaking as the person responsible for your safety I feel that outfit is a little too revealing. I don’t know what we will find at Sol-Eros but if it turns out you two go down there alone I have no way to guarantee your safety.” Noel smiles, “And just where were you going to hide your laser pistol Lafiel?” Lafiel frowns at her, “I see your point Noel consider it logged and noted.” Lafiel grabs her robe and puts it around her. “How long till we rendezvous?” Noel looks at her creunoc “Two point seven-five hours. Have you two made any sense out of the report?”

Jinto smiles, “Yes we have there is one thing that is consistent over the past three hundred years that the Abh have been observing this system.” Noel raises an eyebrow, “And?” Jinto continues. “The planets population, its never less than twenty two thousand four hundred and never more than twenty two thousand four hundred and fifty. They are located in one group, on the largest continent inhabiting its western shore, right here.” Jinto removes a map and points to a position on the western shore. “There has been no sign of movement or exploration of the planet since we have been observing it. Although they are living on one of the best parts of the planet as far as the climate goes, I’d still like to see the latest surveys, these we have are ten years old.”

Noel nods in agreement, “You’ll know soon, I’ll contact you when we’ve docked with his ship.” She turns to leave and says to Lafiel, “Exhibitionist? That’s a word I never though I’d hear used to describe you, Lafiel.” Not waiting for an answer she leaves their quarters. Still a bit shaken over the past half hour events, Noel returns to the bridge. Sitting in the command chair she regains her composure and it’s not a moment too soon. “Captain incoming communication its labeled Priority One and scrambled.” Noel stands, “I’ll take it in the ready room pipe it in there.” She walks across the bridge and enters the small room next to navigator’s station.

The display lamp is flashing she presses it, enters the code, and a familiar face greets her. “Captain you’ve failed to report to me twice, I asked for daily reports.” Spoors face filled the display it was plain to see she was somewhere secluded as well. “You told me to report if there were any changes, there have been none, when there are I will contact you.” She went to terminate the call but Spoor got the final word in. “You owe me Captain, remember that, granted you’ve almost paid your debit off, but for the moment, you still owe me. Spoor out!” The display darkens Ekuryua sits in the little room wondering if her deal with Spoor was really worth it. She had command of the ship and its almost unlimited use. The credits that resided in her account she earned every one of them. She shakes her head, rises out of the seat and returns to the command chair.

“That woman I’ll.” Lafiel sat fuming. Noel had gotten to her again and this time it didn’t sink in till she was long gone. “Jinto what shall I do with her?” Jinto sat there looking at Lafiel even though she was wearing a robe the thought of how she greeted Noel was still in his mind. “To be truthful you’ve been a little less modest lately, not that it worries me, but others might not see the humor in what you’re doing.” Lafiel stood walked to the closet grabbed a uniform went into the bathroom and appeared two minutes later dressed for duty. “You’re right Jinto if I was to greet the ambassador dressed that way he might faint dead away and we do need more information from him now don’t we?”

Jinto nods his head, “Lafiel it’s been one extreme or the other with you lately, you really need to find a middle ground and settle in. When we go planet side if you’re still bouncing off the walls, what kind of impression do you think we’ll leave?” Lafiel stared at him, “I am sending the impression that I’m goofy, scatter brained, is that what you’re trying to tell me Jinto?” Jinto nods, “Ever since that last ceremony you’ve been preoccupied with something and this missions suddenness, it seems to have left you confused, like there was something else on your mind, or.” He looks again at Lafiel. “Did you want a honeymoon or something along those lines?”

Lafiel smiles, “Yeah something like that.” She gazes at the wall then at the planet survey lying on the table. “Actually Jinto, this mission could be just the vacation we’ve been wanting.” Jinto stood shaking his head, “This mission has too much riding on it to turn it into a pleasure trip for the two of us. We do have a home were we can go to relax and be alone.” The expression on Lafiel’s face changes with Jinto’s words it becomes quite defiant. Jinto sees this and ventures on, “Hey Lafiel this is an adventure, a chance to make a change for the good. Do you really want to spoil it with selfish pleasures?” Lafiel now red faced is glaring at him, her eyes two black bottomless pits leading straight to Abh Hell, if Jinto so desired. “How dare you imply I would jeopardize this mission for my own pleasures.”

Lafiel’s anger is now raging. She raises a hand to Jinto he catches it and takes her across his lap. “My dear you’ve needed one of these for quite some time now.” Jinto firmly applies a hand to the middle of her backside. Lafiel yelps and tries to gain her freedom, but Jinto’s hold is resolute. “Jinto Lynn, you shall release me this instant, do you hear me!” Jinto tightens his grip, “Not until you understand what I’ve been saying Lafiel.” Lafiel relaxes and relents “Okay Jinto, your right business before pleasure. Its just that we’ve not been alone but my definition, for a long time and there are some things I’d like to express without interruption, the planet trip seemed the best way to be alone and.” She turns and looks Jinto in the face. The fire was gone from her eyes. “My bottom really hurts Jinto. I promise I’ll be good. Could you please release me?”

Jinto releases her, she gingerly stands before him a lone tear falls across her cheek. He stands and takes her in his arms, “Lafiel I wish I didn’t have to do that to you but sometimes your emotions override your common sense. I’m sorry.” She kisses him. “You’re right I still have to learn that I’m not sitting in a palace governing the Empire, trying to change ones destiny is very hard some times Jinto. I thank you for putting up with me.” Jinto smiles, “I love you Lafiel. I knew what I was getting into the moment I met you and I’ve not regretted one moment of it.” She pulls him towards her, “I love you too Jinto you think we could try a less painful reminder in the future? It’s going to be a while before I can sit. You really walloped me this time. It’s really smarting.” Jinto slid his hands to the top of her hips and started gently rubbing them. “Better?” She settled into his arms “Yeah, down a little lower and don’t stop.”

“Captain were are ready to dock with the ambassadors ship.” Ekuryua sat scanning the area. “Dock with his ship and set up a soft seal with gangway. Notify me when it’s completed, I’ll then go get Ambassador Lynn and Her Highness.” The navigator acknowledges the order and the ships started the docking sequence. Twenty minutes later Ekuryua left the bridge heading for Jinto and Lafiel’s quarters. Arriving she pushed the chime. “Who is it?” Ekuryua announced that they had docked with the ambassador’s ship. “Wonderful Captain give us another five minutes and we’ll be with you.” The light went out and the sounds of two people hurriedly dressing could be heard. Ekuryua stood there smiling when the door opened, Jinto and Lafiel stood before her presentable, but visibly tired.

“You two have been working too hard again.” She paused. “Or have you two been playing too hard again?” Lafiel looked at her and walked pass Ekuryua. She still had a bit of a limp; Ekuryua took notice and spoke. “Yep you’ve been playing too hard again.” Jinto sheepishly smiles and walks by to catch up with Lafiel he was also a bit unsteady in his pace. Ekuryua shuts the cabin door and follows them to the airlock. The only though she had was, “I really hope the rest of the trip is not like this. If it is we’ll never get anything done.”

*********
Ramaj stood in the royal meeting chamber; she was in the center waiting for the members to arrive. Unlike previous occasions several members would be here in person this time instead of video conferencing. It made no difference to Ramaj, living, standing before her or bits of electrons projected upon a screen. They still held the future of the Empire in their hands. A future she was going to play a major part in one way or the other. A hand gently laid upon her shoulder before she could turn a voice said, “Are you ready my daughter?” Standing fast Ramaj replies. “Yes I’m ready. Can you tell me your position on this issue, mother?” The hand raises off her shoulder and the voice replies, “I can not Ramaj. The fate of this issue lies with your ability to convince all of us that we are about to commit folly.” Ramaj nods her head. As always her mother, who ruled before, had stated the obvious. The answer brought Ramaj great comfort. “I’ll be going now my child. I’ll find you after this is done and we can talk more.” Ramaj nods and her mother leave.

The members have gathered. Four families are represented in person the other four are on by video. The Eldest Abh rises off his seat and goes to address the gathered family members. “We are here today to examine the procedures used to ascend to the throne and adjust them as necessary.” Those would be the last words spoken on that subject.

The main display came to life, and the second ranking member of the family spoke, as a video of Dustain arriving at the Capital played. “What is he doing here? You had your orders Ramaj. Why is that man here?” Ramaj stood to speak as she did the melee began. The Elder of the family that Dustain genetically belongs to yells in shock, “He is alive but we were told.” He glared from his display to another family member. For the next twenty minutes accusation of a cover up, lies, threats of actions be taken against families by families flew around the room.

Ramaj stood there overwhelmed at first, and then she realized this was the folly her mother spoke of. A quick glance around the room brought her to her mother’s face. Her mother was showing a smile that Ramaj had seen on many of an occasion before. Returning her smile Ramaj acted, withdrawing her command rod from her belt she proceeded to bang the marble table before her loudly. “That is enough you will come to order! You will stop this bickering! You will let me speak. NOW!”

The room became quiet except for the second Eldest Abh he continued his unrelenting attack. Ramaj steps towards the display, staring at this one was doing her no good. She look at the display and said, “Computer mute this display.” The sound disappeared; the person on the other end was visibly angered. Ramaj stood stead fast in front of the display. “You have two choices sit there in silence or give me your word you’ll not have any more outburst and I’ll allow you to speak, the choice is yours.” Defiant the second eldest Abh shook his head. Ramaj stood back from the monitor and said, “If that’s your decision let it be known you decided that you words need not be heard on this issue.”

The rest of them were in shock, here Ramaj had just censured the second eldest member of the family. Only the one who sat upon the throne had such power. Seizing the moment Ramaj spoke, “That man as you called him is an Abh he has every right to be here, to receive medical treatment and introduction to his heritage.” A gasp went through the room. The Elder from Dustain’s genetic family spoke. “Ramaj do you think it’s wise to do this, to show him his past?”

Ramaj shook her head, “You misunderstand me elder he is Dustain, not Dusanyu. He has no past here; he does however have a future. He’ll never sit on the throne; he’ll never have the status of a royal. But he is Abh by birth, He deserves the rights and privileges everyone born Abh has.” The room rumbles Ramaj turns towards the muted display, the second Eldest Abh is still listening to her words. She addresses the display, “Last chance. You know what I’m about to say next. Do you wish to maintain your self imposed exile?” The second eldest Abh sat there arms folded still defiant.

Ramaj turns away. “Display document file nine sixty-one two thirty-four please.” The main display, displays a document as its being read the noise level in the room dramatically increases. Ramaj bangs her command rod against the tabletop again, and the room falls silent. “Everyone in this room recognizes this document, its style and author has been verified. These are the orders I received concerning Dustain. Since the ruling council did not sign on to these orders. I chose to ignore them. This is why Dustain still lives.” The display containing the second Eldest Abh goes blank.

Ramaj faces the gathered family members. “We came here originally, to accelerate the selection process, to try to find someone worthy to sit on the throne in record time. While we can accelerate the knowledge we cannot the experience. A person well schooled but not experienced would have carried out these orders. An Abh would have been killed for no just cause or reason. Do you really wish to have the Empire run in such a way?”

The Eldest Abh stood and spoke. “I suggest that this meeting end. Before we go though we’d like a copy of all the information you gather on Dustain and we do forbid you from showing him any sensitive information until such time as we have determined he no longer poses a threat to the Empire. Ramaj we will discuss your words among us, and you will have our decision before weeks end. I do think it was wise to form the caretaker government and I will stress to the other members that point. As for those orders I’m personally very happy you disobeyed them. Ramaj we will deal with the author in our own way. We are dismissed.”

Displays go blank and members of the royal family leave. Ramaj stands silent still clutching her command rod stunned by the sudden change in the events. A hand rests on her shoulder, and a voice addresses her. “When you were little you used to have the worst temper tantrums. You would bang your baton until you got the attention you wanted. I’m glad I didn’t silence that desire in you to get attention, it served you well today.”

Returning her rod to her side Ramaj turns towards her mother. “Thank you mother for letting me gain the wisdom I needed to rule and forgive me for not instilling it upon my children and grand children.” Her mother places her fingers across Ramaj lips. “Child you did well with all of them. One of them will become emperor one day just wait, as for my great-grand daughter is there any further word on her mission to Sol-Eros?”

Ramaj shook her head, “They should be meeting the ambassadors ship about now.” Ramaj’s mother nods. “Have you heard the rumors about her and Count Hyde?” Ramaj is confused. “Rumors mother, what rumors?” Her mother smiles, “Well they are rumors my dear, when I find them to be fact I’ll tell you about them.” Ramaj embraces her mother, “I know you will mother. I have to leave now duty calls.” They face each other, smile, and go their separate ways.

*********
Approaching the airlock Jinto and Lafiel turn to Ekuryua, “We’ll go over and get the information from him. When we return we’ll a have a conference and go over his findings.” Ekuryua nods in agreement. Jinto and Lafiel don helmets and enter the airlock. Although the two ships are docked and soft sealed there is always the chance of space debris puncturing the transfer tube so its pressure is set low, transversing it in a helmet is always recommended. Inside the ambassador’s ships airlock, the chamber pressurizes and the door opens. Standing before them is a very shaken ambassador. “Count Hyde. Am I ever glad to see you and Her Highness. Please come with me.” He turns and almost runs down the corridor. Jinto and Lafiel follow him.

He enters a doorway, they follow, papers are strewn across the table and several display windows are open. Jinto recognizes one of them as the current system survey. “You failed to include this in your report.” Jinto said pointing at the display. The ambassador smiles, “I failed to send you a lot of information because you would glean the wrong information from it.” Confused Jinto confronts him. “You were taught better. Nowhere in anything that you sent, did you mention there was current data available. This violates the oath you took planet side. I could have you arrested right now for this violation of protocol.”

The ambassador went pale he cleared the seat at table and sat down, the gravity of his actions had just come home to face him. “I’ll gather the data and give it to you but before you return to Sol-Eros will you confer with me so I might add my impression.” Jinto was stunned for the second time in the last five minutes. “Why was he giving in so suddenly? What did he find in the survey that kept him from forwarding them along?”

Jinto needed answers now. “Wait one minute I said I could have you arrested. Not that I was going to have you arrested. Would you please explain what is so fascinating about this data. We’d really like to hear it from you.” Lafiel, who had been intently listening to the exchange, and who was as confused as Jinto was, continued. “Would you like something to drink or a moment to gather your thoughts?”

The ambassador sat staring at the current planet survey he uttered only one sentence. “I do believe they are all going to die.” He then gathered up the material and presented it to Jinto, his look became detached and sorrowful. “Study this well Count and before you leave do contact me. I’d like your impressions of the data.” He then escorted them back to the airlock. It was like he wanted them off the ship as soon as possible, for some reason Jinto sensed the urgency in his actions and followed along.

Once they were safely aboard the Attack Frigate, the ambassador’s ship detached and moved away from them. Ekuryua met them in the corridor that lead from the airlock. “That didn’t take very long. Did you get everything you wanted?” Jinto nods. “That was really a weird visit he gave us everything and then suddenly.” He looks to Lafiel she continues, “He threw us off the ship. I have never been so confused in all my life.”

Ekuryua was stunned. She went to speak and was interrupted by the communications officer. “Captain we are receiving a coded message from the ambassadors ship should I send it dow...” Alarms sound as the ship shakes violently the three of them are knocked off their feet. Bracing herself, Ekuryua shouts into her creunoc. “What just happened? Bridge status report.” The first officer’s voice is heard; “Captain, the ambassadors ship, it has imploded, there is nothing left.” Ekuryua pulled herself to her feet. “Bridge, are you certain it was an implosion?”

“Yes Captain I’ve seen one before. We are studying the scans now. But it looks like a sudden anti proton, anti matter implosion.” Ekuryua closes her creunoc the alarms have fallen silent. Jinto has helped Lafiel to her feet and the two of them have gathered the data that was tossed about the corridor. Ekuryua turns to them, “Another eight minutes aboard that ship and all of us would be dead now. Just what happened over there and what’s in the message he sent over?” The three of them stood there puzzled wondering just what had happened. They had a lot of questions and very few answers.

*********
“Erin you look troubled, is it the fact that the Abh have not contacted us, or is it something different?” Li inquired. Erin stood gazing out upon the village. In the noonday sun exposure was limited to only nine minutes per hour. Any more would cause illness. She so wanted to be out there enjoying this beautiful, but also potentially deadly day. “I have been reviewing my decision to send the Abh ambassador away. I still stand firm in my decision he was potentially more of an adversary, than this planet has become. I know in my heart that the Abh will be back and that they will be able to help us.”

Li did not share her opinion. “Erin. You like your father before you, are too much of a dreamer. You must become more of a realist.” Erin interrupted her, “Like you are, a pragmatic doom and gloom seer? My father led us through several potential disasters. We have survived we will continue to survive.” Li turned sharply, her long black ponytail following her obediently. “Just because you are in line to lead doesn’t mean that you will lead. It has been a long time since your clan was challenged, maybe this should be the moment.” Li left the room her words followed her. Erin stood watching the village, the wind moving her shoulder length brown hair across her still ringing ears. Li had just stated the general consensus of the ruling council. If she couldn’t find a way out of the present situation, her best friend and assistant Li would probably challenge her.

“Admiral we’ve cleared Sord Laitpanr. We are being hailed by the chief controller, should I send it to your quarters?” Kufadis patiently awaited Spoor’s answer it did not take very long. The door to the bridge lift opened and Spoor entered the deck. Proceeding to the command chair, she took her seat and said to Kufadis, “Put the controller on Kufadis.” The main display came to life and a woman who bore a striking resemblance to Admiral Spoor spoke, “Hi sis, mother and I are waiting for you on the station, how long till you dock with it?” Spoor glanced in Kufadis direction he said; “About ten hours at present speed Admiral.” She stood and addressed the display; “Twelve hours not a minute more. I’ll see you then.” The display darkens and Spoor returns to her seat. “Kufadis I want the best speed to the station, stay sub light but I want to be there with in six hours. Can we do that?”

Kufadis worked the numbers it was possible, although navigation in such a crowded system at that speed would mean taking some risks and staying off the established routes. “It can be done but there are some risks involved.” Spoor smiles, “Then do it Kufadis, be careful, but do it.” The navigator had plotted the course and the Lashkau accelerated to ninety-two percent of light speed. Kufadis stood and walked over to Spoor. “Why all the rush? You told them twelve hours they seem to accept that, this isn’t going to be another one of your surprise visits is it?”

Spoor nods, “For the last thirty years all my younger sister has hoped is that I’d die in combat, so she could assume my position and title. Well I keep coming home. I have a feeling since she’s now involved our mother in this. She’s going to try again to usurp my position. I’ll not stand for this nonsense any longer. If I can show up unannounced then that gives me the upper hand, you do understand me don’t you Kufadis?”

Kufadis nods, “If you really want to surprise her then we should shield ourselves the last half of the trip, no one will know where we are.” Spoor places her arm on his shoulder. “You’ve turned out to be an exceptional Chief of Staff. It could be one of the reasons I care about you as I do.” Kufadis winks at her, “Same here Admiral let me see if I can nudge a little more speed out of this battleship.”

He walks away from her and resumes his position, after conferring with the navigator and chief engineer the Lashkau accelerates to ninety-six percent of light speed. “Admiral we’ll need to start deacceleration in four hours. We should arrive at the station thirty minutes after that. Our total time en route five hours eighteen minutes.” Spoor smiles and leans back in her chair. The Lashkau speeds through the system and towards the orbital station.

*********
The sudden change in course and speed awoke her. “Bridge what’s going on? Why the course change?” Risch answered her, “Captain you better come to engineering and bring them with you, we’ve got a problem.” Ekuryua rose dressed and banged on Jinto and Lafiel’s cabin door, luckily for her they had been studying the surveys for Sol-Eros. They were awake and dressed. Explaining Risch’s communication to them Jinto and Lafiel joined her in rushing down to the engineering department.

“We’ve stabilized the field again but I’m not sure how much longer it will hold chief.” Ekuryua was entering the control room she picked you on that much of the conversation. “What field? What’s happening around here?” Risch motioned them to the anti-proton containment field generator display. “It started about ten minutes ago the field tried to collapse we’ve diverted power to it and it seems stable. I had navigation change course for the first normal space exit they could find. Luckily we are very close to Sord 933 it leads into a developed and explored sector, that way if we have to abandon this ship. I’d rather be in normal space close to civilization than in plane space.”

While Ekuryua is still taking this in, Jinto is observing the display with great interest. Lafiel asks the main question “What you mean is we could lose the ship, you’re not sure of what caused this or how to fix it completely?” Risch nods. “The only thing I can tell you is running the space time bubble generator is contributing to the problems we are having. I can’t tell you anything else till we’ve made normal space and I have taken it off line.”

Ekuryua rolls her creunoc to her lips. “Bridge how long till we exit Sord 933?” “Ten minutes Captain, where are you now?” “Engineering, bring the ship to alert, all non essential personal assemble in the docking bays just in case we need to leave here in a hurry, Ekuryua out. Risch I’ll be on the bridge.” She turns to Jinto and Lafiel. “Gather your data and research, one way or the other we are going to Sol-Eros even if we have to do it in a Cilique.” Jinto and Lafiel exit the room, Ekuryua turns to Risch, “If I were given the choice of either you or this ship, you know it’s you I choose, remember that Risch don’t do anything foolish.” She kisses him on the cheek and heads for the bridge. Risch turns and sees the look on his crew; “Don’t you take your eyes off those panels and what the Captain just did, she just did.”

The ship, that was quite when they came to engineering, was now a bustling beehive if activity. Off duty members of the crew prepared the Cilique’s for immediate departure. It was a struggle for Jinto and Lafiel to return to their cabin. Once inside Lafiel started gathering up most of her belongings, spying this Jinto spoke “What are you doing Lafiel? There’s not time for that now.” She turns and faces him, “These are my memories I’ll not leave them here, just where do you get off being this way their your memories too.”

Jinto who was putting the data from Sol-Eros into a shielded container says, ”Take those things that can’t be replaced Lafiel, the rest can be. Do you understand me Lafiel? There is not enough time to argue this.” She stood there for a moment then started taking only those things of great importance. A data container and two small bags is all that left their cabin.

Making their way to the cilique deck Lafiel said, “Now I understand how you felt when we left the Gosroth, you knew the ship probably would not survive, yet you left everything of value to you there.” Jinto places his arm around Lafiel “Not everything, I left with the one thing I couldn’t replace, you.” She places her arm around him. “Yeah I guess you did, but at that time did I really mean that much to you?” Jinto nods as they walk towards the door that leads to the deck.

Clearing the Sord and with the generator off line the anti-proton containment shielding stabilized. Leaving an engineering crew aboard, Ekuryua order the Cilique’s to launch and keep a safe distance from the ship. Aboard the lead cilique and the one closest to the attack frigate Ekuryua sat waiting. Risch still cautioned Ekuryua to keep the ships ready to evacuate. “Give us another hour to study what’s going on over here and be ready for an immediate departure, just in case something goes wrong.”

His words brought her little comfort, although there were several escape pods in the engineering section, their use would have to be balanced by keeping the ship stable enough for the rest of them to escape the area safely. A ship the size of this one imploding meant that an area of one-quarter light second of clearance would be necessary to insure survival of any craft in the area. The escape pods were capable of rapid acceleration, but it all depended on how soon the ship imploded after their launch.

Jinto and Lafiel sat aboard the third cilique. They were the furthest away from the ship. The view out the window was a lonely one. The ship sat there motionless and dark. Most of the power was being redirected to the containment generator. The only light visible were the position lights that blinked aft, forward, starboard and port on the ship. Minutes seemed like hours all they could do was watch and wait. Jinto decided that the time could be spent studying the planet survey from Sol-Eros he opened the container and an alarm sounded inside the cilique. “Jinto the containment shield is failing close that container.” Lafiel shouted. Closing the container brought the levels back to normal.

Lafiel opened a link to Risch. “Seems we’ve found the problem it’s something we got in the Sol-Eros data package Jinto opened the shielded container and our containment field started to collapse. Closing the container restored the field.” Lafiel awaited Risch’s reply. “Well that explains why we can’t find anything aboard the ship. You took it with you. I guess you’d better come back and let’s see what you have.” Lafiel slowly moved the cilique towards the ship. Upon docking Risch took the container and told them to return to their previous position.

“Look Jinto I can’t endanger any more people. We’ll examine the contents of this container and get back to you. Now get out of here.” Jinto nods and watches Risch take the container away. He knows there are facilities aboard the ship better equipped to analyze the contents. They were lucky that Lafiel figured out so quickly what happened. The reactor on a cilique is much closer and less shielded than the Attack Frigate’s is. A few more minutes and they would have been vaporized. They had positioned the cilique back to the same position as before. They sat watching the frigate and they both let out a sigh of relief.

“Wow that was close.” Kufadis heard the navigator say and indeed it was. The asteroid had missed the Lashkau by only three hundred meters. Using the back route to the station had brought them through several asteroid fields this should be the last one. “Commander it’s time to deaccelerate should I notify the Admiral?” Kufadis said he’d notify the Admiral and for the deacceleration to begin.

Sleeping her bunk Spoor awakes to the sudden change in the movement of the Lashkau. Looking at the time she dresses and heads for the bridge. The doors open and the station is on the main viewer, they have arrived ahead of schedule. “Very good Kufadis take us to the docking platform aft fifty-five.” Spoor takes her seat and opens a link to the station.

The stationmaster is very surprised; “Your Grace, you’re early. Should I make a system wide announcement?” Spoor intervenes, “You do and it’ll will be the last thing you do in this life. I’ll personally see to that myself. Now I’m heading for aft fifty-five, authorize the dock to accept this ships beacon and be a good fellow about it.” The stationmaster acknowledges the transmission he also seems a lot paler than he was at first.

Spoor closes the link and looks at Kufadis. “You think I was a little rough with him? Let me tell you something, he’s one of the few people that work for me that have come this close.” She holds her fingers just barely apart so a little light passes through them. “To taking a walk outside without a spacesuit. That fool would have alerted the three star systems I control if I had let him. We arrive unannounced this time. Well I hope we do.”

“We found it Captain. We know what it is and we’ve isolated it. You can return to the ship.” Risch’s words rang through out all of the Cilique’s, most of them let out a cheer, all except the one Lafiel and Jinto piloted. They were full of curiosity more than relief. Docking with the ship, they met Ekuryua and headed to the engineering section. Their questions were about to be answered.

Risch sat in front of a containment field. There was a container inside the field. In the container were three pages of the planets survey. New copies of the pages sat next to him, as Jinto enter the room he handed the copies to him and pointed to the field. “This is the problem, these sheets of paper contain an organic material, probably soil, which is highly charged with positive proton radiation. The half life seems to be about sixty hours and the pages have several different deposits in various stages of decay.” Risch turns to the monitor, “I know how the ambassadors ship imploded too.” He begins to play the last message from the ambassador. It shows the ambassador sitting at his desk in his quarters a lone plant is sitting on the desk with him, as he speaks he knocks the plant over. Righting the plant he brushes the excess soil into his hand turns and places it in the waste bin.

Risch freezes the video there, ”That plant, there is nothing in the records that indicate it came from anywhere in the Empire. So I’m assuming he got it on Sol-Eros. After he put the soil into the waste system it takes thirty-two seconds for the ship to implode.” Jinto nods, “There were smudges on the paper I brushed then off with a wet towel and sent it down the bowl then why didn’t we implode then?”

Risch shakes his head, “Two different systems, wet and dry waste. Wet waste goes through decontamination and reclamation. Dry waste goes straight to the reactor to be used as fuel. So you dump a hand full of protons into an anti-proton reactor the shields won’t hold it. In fact they probably contributed to the rapid destruction of the ship. They contained the implosion, instead of letting it explode. Although I’m guessing on that part, I’m not willing to do the experiment.” Ekuryua places her hand on his shoulder, “I’ll take your word on it engineer we’ve almost lost this ship once you need not try again.”

Risch smiles and continues, “If all the organic material on that planet is like the plants soil. Sol-Eros poses a deadly hazard to this ship and it’s crew. We will need to do a thorough survey when we arrive paying special attention to ambient and background radiation levels. If the people on that planet are contaminated like that, I guess I’d better see if there is a way to decontaminate them too.” Ekuryua nods, “Should we go back to plane space? It is the quickest way” Risch stares at the container then he looks at Ekuryua. ”Captain until I completely understand this substance or until it’s completely decayed let’s steer clear of plane space.”

Ekuryua links to the bridge. “Navigator, have you figured out a course to Sol-Eros?” The navigator responded there were two possible ways one of them back through the Sord and the other a transition through this system to a Sord much closer to Sol-Eros. “Plot and execute the transition through the system, estimated time to the Sord?” there is a pause. “About three days Captain shall we proceed then?” Ekuryua stares at her creunoc. “Yes get a move on up there!”

The ship suddenly accelerates and Ekuryua says, “Some days I don’t know about those people.” She closes the link and turns to leave. “Risch, good work, any changes let me know I’ll be in my quarters.” She leaves. Jinto looks to Lafiel, “You mind if I stay for a little bit this is pretty interesting stuff?” Lafiel gathers up their hurriedly packed belongings, “It’s okay Jinto. I’ll go unpack then I’ll grab a nap. Wake me when you get back.” Her words fall on already occupied ears Risch and Jinto are staring at the data being displayed by the containment field. Lafiel walks away from them, Jinto does notice and says, “Okay honey, I’ll wake you up when I get back.”

Risch looks at him, “HONEY? She’s not a bee or a sweet sticky fluid explain please?” Jinto smiles he pushes some information into his creunoc and shows Risch the reply. Honey: Informal. a person for whom one feels love or deep affection; sweetheart; darling. “So it’s not an Abh term, then it something else?” Then it finally hits him, “Ah, now I see, so it’s a romantic phrase. You know I’d like to try some of those on Noel, but I guess it would be a good thing if she understood what I’m saying?” Jinto nods, “Yeah there’s a book too. I’ll make you a copy.” They go back to watching the display output.

*********
Lafiel enters their quarters the place is a mess, “we did pack and leave in a hurry” she thought. Taking her time she put everything back in its place, she changed her clothes and settled in for the rest of the night. After an hour of light reading Lafiel turned down the lights and fell asleep. It was a light sleep at first then finally a deeper sleep came up one her. Thoughts of the day first flowed through her mind then deeper, more complex dreaming, then finally.

“NO!” she screamed at the top of her lungs. The cabin echoed with her words. She sat up in bed covered with sweat and shaking. Adjusting the lights she noticed Jinto wasn’t there. Time? She wonders what time it was, focusing on the display on the desk it tells her she’s been asleep four and a half hours. Sleep was no longer an option. She disrobed took a shower, dressed casual and went looking for Jinto.

Stepping into engineering, she found him watching the display and saw Risch was dozing in a chair across from him. She slipped her arms around Jinto from behind, a little startled he spoke, “Hi Lafiel I guess I got involved in watching this and I’m sorry I forgot about you.” She kissed his cheek and pulled the chair that was to his right out and took a seat. “I had that dream again. It went a little further this time. I still don’t know if you die or not, but this time I woke up screaming and sweating its seems so real. I’m beginning to hate nightmares I really wish we could get to the bottom of this. Maybe after Sol-Eros we’ll go see Doctor Sasoum and see if she’s got any ideas.” Jinto still watching the display spoke, “You could call her and see if she had any.” A cold clammy hand touched him. Jinto turned Lafiel sat there pale and still shaking. “Okay Lafiel when we get done here we’ll go home and have the Doctor come out if she can.”

Lafiel relaxed she started watching the display along with Jinto. “I don’t see what’s so interesting Jinto the radiation is decaying at the rate you calculated earlier. Why don’t you come to bed with me? I don’t have nightmares when you’re near me.” Jinto shook his head. “Think about what you just said Lafiel. You’re correct the decay is constant but the ambassador’s ship was almost twelve days outbound from Sol-Eros. There shouldn’t have been any radiation, but there was some on board, enough to have radiated the soil” Jinto stops. He looks at Lafiel, “Wow what was I thinking I thought the soil was contaminated what if.”

Jinto removes an organic sample and places it in the scanner. Lafiel finally picks up on Jinto’s direction of thinking. “You think it’s the vegetation Jinto? But how and more confusing why would you want radiation producing vegetation?” Jinto turns to her, “What if they don’t know its radiation producing. What if their planet has suffered some catastrophic change that…” The ambassadors words come back to Jinto, ”Lafiel, remember the Ambassadors last words something about everyone dying he didn’t mean the ship he meant the planet.”

In the time he’s spoken to Lafiel there has been a reaction inside the scanner. The organic material, which he thought dead, is regenerating at a rapid rate. “Lafiel look at this will you, it’s growing without soil right before our eyes.” Indeed the sample, which had been only a few cells minutes ago, was taking the shape of the plant that resided in the ambassador’s quarters. “Quick Jinto, stop irradiating it before we have another reactor breach.”

Lafiel’s exclamation brought Risch awake. Seeing the mass growing and watching the levels of the anti-proton containment field fluctuate he spoke, “Jinto, you fool, never do unshielded experiments especially around the reactor!” He takes a containment canister and slides the sample into it. The levels returned to normal. “You mind telling me just what you were up to? Beside trying to destroy the ship!” Jinto proceeds to explain to Risch what had happened since he fell asleep. “I see so the soil was decaying as expected. Then when you subjected the organic material to the radiation of the scanner it started growing.” Lafiel added her comments, “For a moment it stopped growing when the scanner was shut off, then it suddenly took off again.”

Risch nods, “It found another source to tap into, take a look over here.” He points at the ships power usage display. “See this spike about three minutes ago, that’s when you shut off the scanner and now this one. It’s another power spike, notice it shows no discernable usage source, it just power being consumer like a plant would do planet side sitting in the sun. This plant doesn’t need visible light to grow it just needs a radiation source and I’ll bet if we move this experiment to a more controlled environment you’ll find it’s waste product is.”

Jinto nods, “Proton radiation. That makes sense then the reason.” Jinto stops, “Wait if it’s the waste product then why didn’t the ambassadors ship implode sooner and why did the paper start a reaction it’s all very strange?” Risch looks at the data again. “It is very strange, I guess we’ll have to grow us one of these plants and see what causes it to discharge protons.”

The beeping of his creunoc broke his concentration. “Yes Captain how can I help you?” “You mind telling me what’s going on down there? The ships readings have jumped around like we were being attacked! Everything shows stable now but.” Risch replies. “Sorry Captain there won’t be any further unauthorized experiments going on, I promise.” A moment’s silence is followed by, “See to it engineer. Captain out!”

He takes the container and heads for another part of the engineering section. “If you want to know what the cause is, then don’t sit there follow me you two.” Jinto and Lafiel sheepishly follow Risch down the corridor. He enters an isolated room and places the container in an isolation chamber that has an airlock to open space. “Here is where we explore the unknown. If the experiment goes wrong we eject it into space and at the speed we are going it won’t make any difference if it explodes the second it hit the space vacuum. We’ll be safely away. Now lets have a look at this plant of yours.”

Risch takes a soil container and places it in the isolation container, and then he places the canister containing the sample of organic material in the isolation chamber. Taking the remote hands he removes the organic material from the canister, places it on the soil, raises the isolation field and starts to irradiate it. With in a few minutes it has taken root and grown a couple of inches in height. Risch ceases the radiation and the plant grows dormant.

Scanning the plant, Risch is confused. He looks at Jinto; “The plant has absorbed and is keeping the radiation stored with in its structure, the soil is almost radiation free. Here take a look for yourself.” Jinto looks at the results, the plant is retaining its stored radiation. “So how did the soil become contaminated? What causes the plant to release its radiation into the soil?”

Jinto looks at the plant. “You know, it looks like the one the ambassador had, kind of sickly. I told him he should water it.” Risch looks at Jinto, “You’re joking. This plant doesn’t need anything besides radiation to survive in fact it could probably survive in, I wonder if it could survive in a vacuum?” Risch starts to lower the pressure in the chamber while Jinto watches the display for any changes.

Passing through one quarter atmosphere the plant starts to destabilize. Risch stops there and slowly returns the pressure to one atmosphere. “Seems it doesn’t like a vacuum. That might be one way to destroy it.” He looks at the plant again, it has reconstructed itself it shows no damage from it near death experience. “A hearty little monster you are, you’re going to be hard to kill off I see.” Jinto is still analyzing the data from the experiment. “We put it through all of that and it still didn’t shed any radiation into the soil, I don’t get it what does it take to make this plant err, um, ah! Discharge?”

Risch and Lafiel have the same thought at the same moment. They look at the plant and then to Jinto. “You don’t think it was the water?” Lafiel nods. “There is an easy way to find out all you have to do is raise the humidity in the chamber and monitor the soil.” Risch agrees. He takes the remote hands and places two probes into the soil. “Jinto there should be another graph on the right side of the display do you see it?” Jinto looks at the display, “Yes I do. Is that the soil spectrum analyzer?”

Risch nods. “You got it keep an eye on it as I raise the moister content, if anything changes let me know. Lafiel sit at the main console and be ready to eject the sample.” He opens a link to the bridge, “Captain were are about to try something that could be very interesting, if the containment alarms sound we might not hear them. So if they do, flash the main console down here.” Ekuryua acknowledged the transmission and added this comment, “Be Careful will you.” The link went silent.

Risch starts to increase the moister content of the air in the chamber at forty-five percent strange things start happening. A sudden rise in radiation and soil ph is detected. Lafiel notices that the plant is starting to destabilize. “The structure is coming apart it’s returning to the unstable matter we first found.” Risch stops at fifty five percent humidity the soil radiation stabilizes. “I wonder what if?” Risch starts to dry out the chamber. The soil ph and radiation content return to normal.

“So it was the water and if just raising the humidity causes that reaction just think what must happen if you apply water directly to it? I have one question for you two. Did it look like the plant when you were in the ambassador’s quarters? Had been transplanted? I‘m just wondering how the report got soil and organic matter on it?” Jinto and Lafiel thought, they couldn’t come up with a definitive answer. So the mystery of how the soil came to be on the report would be just that.

Its very simple, Lafiel you shall say.
In return I'd like to call you Jinto."

Standing in the middle of the orbital station. Spoor took a good look around. “Things haven’t changed very much since the last time I was here.” She turns to Kufadis. “This is where I spent a lot of time, away from my sister.” She turned her gaze back to the platform. There were shops, restaurants and places to sit and view the planet below. She grabs Kufadis hand. “Do you like ice cream?” He shrugged his shoulders. She started to pull him along. He decided to come readily lest his shoulder become separated. They approached a shop entered into it and sat down at a small table. A waitress approached them and Spoor orders two dishes of ice cream. She leaves and a few moments later, a gentleman approaches them.

“Well I’ll be, Admiral Spoor, it’s been a very long time since you were last here. That order came back and I knew it had to be you.” He notices Kufadis sitting next to her. “And this is?” Spoor smiles, “He’s the one I told you about.” Kufadis is a little confused. Spoor straightens him out. “Kufadis I’d like you to meet my father.”

Before he could speak the gentleman speaks. “It’s Yanari, Painiach was always bad about using my name. I’ve heard a lot of good about you son. To make my daughter happy is quite a feat.” Spoor glares at him. “Father you know I’m easy to please.” Kufadis and Yanari look at each other and smile they turn to her in unison and say, “Yes Painiach, whatever you say my dear.”

Spoor is not pleased. “Fine father you’ve made your point you do know why I’m here?” he nods. “Yes I do and this time I’ll help if you wish it, but I’ll not go against your mother. Even though we’ve been separated sixty years. We are still friends and I’ll not lose that friendship to keep peace between you and your half sister.”

Kufadis about fell out of his chair. “Half sister? You never mentioned that. Are there any other surprises I should know about?” Spoor frowns, “Thanks Daddy. I’ve not told him about her. Well I guess there’s no better time than right now.” Her father nods, “You do that, right now I need to go back to work.” He walks away about that time the ice cream arrives.

Two large bowls of a purplish ice cream sit before them. “Kufadis you’ll like this, as for my sister, well as you have figured out already she doesn’t share the same genes as I do. In fact I’m not real sure of her genetic make up. You see father and mother had this argument quite a few years back, father gave up his claims to mother’s fortune and she bought him this ice cream shop.” Kufadis sat eating the ice cream, it was very good. “So your sister is from your mother and some one else?” Spoor nods. “I’ve never figured it out either, there was never another male that spent any amount of time with mother after father, so I’m not sure just how she was conceived.”

Spoor dove into her ice cream. Kufadis was about finished. “This is really good. Something special just for you?” Spoor nods. “Yes this was a recipe that father and I developed quite a while back. It was his top seller, then there was a run in with my sister she made a bunch of claims about it’s contents all of which were lies, but the damage was done and father stopped selling it. When I order this it’s my way of letting him know I’m here.” Kufadis stares at the dish and then at Spoor. She’s polished the ice cream off in record time. “Is this why you and your sister are at odds, ice cream?”

Spoor smiles. “No. This was the straw that broke up our relationship. She’s become very completive since this happened. She’s tried twice to claim the head position of the family. She even gone as far as to fake my death, of course when I arrived home and they ran the test on me. She was banished from all official family functions. Now she’s gotten mother involved in some new scheme I’m afraid, and you’re going to end up involved if you stay here with me. So I’m giving you the choice right now Kufadis, stay and face whatever she’s cooked up with me, or return to the ship. I’ll hold no ill feelings if you return, it’s really not your fight.”

Kufadis reaches across the table and holds Spoor’s hand. “After all we’ve been through you think I’d walk away now. Are you sure you’re feeling all right Admiral? I’m with you for the long haul. Your father seems a nice enough guy. I’d like to meet your mother and your sister. So I’m not leaving you alone, we’ve fought all of our fights together so far. Include me is this one too.” Spoor squeezes his hand and smiles. “Thank you, I guess we should go see them now.”

Spoor pays the bill and they leave the ice cream parlor. Kufadis hesitates, and then he asks Spoor, “How am I suppose to behave? What will be expected of me?” Spoor stops walking and turns towards him. “Well we’re not at the Capital and this is not a military function. That’s why we are dressed as we are, causal. Kufadis this should be a causal meeting, my sister has never launched an attack cold. She’ll feel me out to see if she can find any weakness, then exploit them in a later conversation. I want to be up front about our relationship, especially if my mother is there. Any more questions ask now because once we are there I’ll be occupied watching my sister and mother.”

Kufadis had one more question. “You said we are to be up front about our relationship, does that include the conversation we had three days ago? Spoor nods. “If the subject come up then we will tackle it then that’s part of the reason I wanted to discuss that with you.” Kufadis looks a bit uneasy Spoor pick up on it, “Look at my age, children would normally be the furthest thing from my mind. But the idea of having a child with you is just too wonderful, to let it pass by. I think. Like I said earlier we would produce an exceptional off spring, don’t you think so?”

He stood there stunned. The original conversation had left him feeling a lot of things, some of which he had not expressed as of yet. Now there is going to be this confrontation with her family, with the possibility of their personal plans coming out into the open, scared him. “Just to let you know I’m a bit uneasy discussing that subject in front of your family. Should it come up I’ll let you take the lead Okay?” Spoor kisses him on the forehead, “That’s fine Kufadis, leading the charge is what I do best.” They turn and continue to the meeting, with Kufadis still feeling a little uneasy.

“Admiral? Commander Ekuryua is calling. There is a fifteen second delay and the communication is scrambled.” Sobbash has plants in her hands but this was the message she’d been waiting for. There was a terminal in the nursery. She had her Chief of Staff forward it there. She asks Samson to follow her. The display flickers then Ekuryua’s face appears. “I’ll make this short and to the point Admiral. I wish I’d never taken this assignment. The ambassador’s ship has imploded. I’ve almost lost this one and the happy couple is heading for a very uncertain meeting on the surface of Sol-Eros. You’ll get a detailed report after this transmission and as we agreed I’m delaying Spoors report by five hours, so I can have your complete reply.” Ekuryua’s facial looks change. She becomes quite vulnerable looking. “Sobbash this one is really scary. I’m relying on you and Samson to supply any and all information you can to help us out. The report follows. I await your response. Ekuryua out.”

The data stream starts flowing. Sobbash turns to Samson, “I’ll need to decode this can you clean up around here and meet me in my office as soon as possible?” Samson nods. Sobbash leaves the gardens and heads for her office. Her Chief of Staff is waiting. She stops Sobbash from entering the office. “You’re not going to like this. Atosuryua is waiting in there for you.” Sobbash stops. “How long has she been in there?” “About an hour. I was going to tell you, then the Commanders communication came through and.” Sobbash nods. “Let me borrow that, I need her out of here now.” Her Chief of Staff removes her side arm and gives it to Sobbash. “Stationmaster Samson is on his way here. Go outside and intercept him. Tell him what’s going on and don’t let him interfere. Do you understand me?” The Chief nods. “Perfectly Admiral, should I notify base security as well?” Sobbash nods. “Yeah you better, she gets too mouthy I just might use this.”

The Chief leaves, and Sobbash walks into her office. “Atosuryua what brings you here? I though I told you we’d get together in another three days?” Atosuryua is standing looking at the contents of Sobbash’s office. “Pretty spartan office Admiral. I figured it would be swamped with work seeing that’s the excuse you always use to avoid my communications.” She turns towards Sobbash and notices the side arm on her hip. “You planning on using that Sobbash?” Sobbash nods. “I told you before. I don’t like surprise visits especially when they serve no purpose. Unless you have a purpose I do have important business to attend to. You will remove your self from this office and return to your ship Atosuryua.”

Sobbash raises the retainer on the holster and places her hand on the laser pistol. Atosuryua becomes alarmed, “You wouldn’t shoot an unarmed person, you’re bluffing.” Sobbash pulls the weapon from the holster and with her thumb sets it to the maximum setting. “Atosuryua I told you I don’t have the time or the patience to argue with you. Get out of my office and go back to your ship now!”

Sobbash levels the weapon at Atosuryua. Her finger starts to gently squeeze the trigger on the laser pistol. “Fine! I’m leaving! You’ve not heard the last of this Sobbash.” Atosuryua walks out of the office, Samson and the Chief are waiting outside along with them are four security officers. Sobbash is several steps behind with the pistol pointed at Atosuryua’s head, she sees the security officers and says, “Escort the Admiral back to her ship and do not let her back on this base without my written permission.”

The security officers take Atosuryua in tow and they leave the command center. Atosuryua can be heard voicing her disapproval over being treated like this. It falls on deaf ears. Sobbash slide the controller to normal, returns the pistol to its holster, removes it from her waist and returns it to the Chief of Staff. “Thanks, it came in real handy.”

The Chief puts it back around her waist. “Would you have use it Admiral? Would you have taken her life? Sobbash smiles. “Depends on how stubborn she was going to be. I’ve got important work to do. She was interfering with it. End of story.” The Chief stunned walks off. Samson comes over to Sobbash he touches her hand it’s trembling. “You’re not so good are you?”

She steps into his arms. “I was ready to shoot her. I was almost enjoying the thought of removing her from my life. I was seconds from doing it, when I remembered I’d be arrested and I’d be leaving them out there without their support line, us. Samson that’s the only reason I didn’t finish pulling that trigger.” Samson held her tightly. “I’m proud of you Sobbash you did well just keep remembering that old Midgrad saying “Some things are not worth going to jail for and Atosuryua is one of them. Now lets go inside and see what they’ve gotten themselves into this time.” They walk slowly into the office they will spend till well after dawn in there.

*********
Five hours had passed. It was becoming evident to Ekuryua that she would have to report to Spoor without the benefit of Sobbash and Samson’s analysis of the data. She sat in her cabin the recorder in pause her brain wrestling with just how much information to send Spoor. If she sent all of it without really understanding it, no she couldn’t do that. She needed her little bit of leverage over Spoor. She decided to wait one more hour in the hopes Sobbash would reply. Closing her eyes she drifted off.

“Captain, Captain Ekuryua. Please respond.” Rubbing her eyes she answered the hail. “Yes what is it?” “Admiral Sobbash is calling. She on standby, now.” Looking at the clock it’s been almost four hours since she decided to wait one hour, it didn’t matter Sobbash was calling that meant she and Samson had found some new information. She leaned forward and pressed the lit button, a message showed that there was a thirty-second delay.

“Sobbash how are you?” the display flickered. Her greeting finally reached Sobbash’s ear then she spoke. “We’ve looked over the data you’ve sent and believe that going alone to Sol-Eros is not recommended. There are little usable Star Forces resources in your area. So I’m dispatching you some help from here. Have you contacted Admiral Spoor yet?”

Ekuryua answered that she had not. Receiving Ekuryua’s reply Sobbash smiled and said; “That’s good Ekuryua don’t worry about contacting her. I’ll take care of that from here. Since I can send you help via plane space it should arrive around the same time you reach the Sord that leads to Sol-Eros. I’m sending you a research vessel; two more attack frigates, a hospital ship and two transport ships, in case you need to move the residents of Sol-Eros. I suggest we keep our resources out of the range of their planetary sensors. We don’t want them to think we are invading them. You’ll have operational command until I arrive, then you’ll still retain mission command. I’ll keep the rest of the fleet in check.”

Ekuryua is stunned. She figured Sobbash went overboard on her offer of help. Sitting for a second she responds, “Sobbash I don’t understand why all the resources are being dispatched. What was in the data that’s lead you to believe this?”

Waiting for the message to arrive to Sobbash. Ekuryua kept thinking, wondering, what was so important, that she almost missed the first part of Sobbash’s response. “Commander when we get there. I’ll share our results with you not a moment sooner, sit tight Ekuryua, we’ll be there in less than three days trust us.” The display froze then went blank; Ekuryua despised long distance communications they always ended so suddenly. She shut off the display notified the bridge not to enter the Sord and that they would be getting company in the next seventy-two hours. She dimmed the lights in her room and finished the sleep she so desperately needed.

“Honey, get up. There’s a message for you on the vide phone.” There was no response. He took a deep breath and said. “Seelnay Dorin! Get your butt out of bed and answer the phone!” First a pillow, then the alarm clock flew in his general direction. Catching them both he said, “Last time Seelnay! Next time it’s a bucket of cold water, now get up!” First two feet hit the floor, then two arms reached for the robe at the end of the bed. Finally she stood and said, “Why do you always have to keep this house so damn cold.” She wondered the other way. The vide phone was to her left she was heading right. “Seelnay where are you going the phone is over here!” Her back to him and her body headed this way instead of that, she yelled one word “PEE!”

She disappeared into the bathroom after a moment she re entered the room and pushed the message button. Reading the message her eyes went wide, she woke almost instantly and she turned to Ku. “We’re leaving as soon as we can get packed, they need our help.” She turned away from the display went to the dresser removed an outfit and started to dress. Ku stood there confused, Seelnay got annoyed; “If you’re coming with me husband, your pajama bottoms won’t do.” Ku walked over to the vide phone the message was from Admiral Sobbash in which she detailed the situation Jinto and Lafiel found themselves in. Realizing the seriousness of it Ku opened a drawer grabbed some clothes and started dressing. He turned to Seelnay “Well so much for the honeymoon I guess we could continue when we get back.”

Seelnay smiled, “We still got three days till we rendezvous with them, I’m sure we can think of something. Just one question, who is going to watch the business while we are gone?” Ku smiles. “One phone call and it’s all set. I’ll make it before we leave, guess I’d better notify the docking facility that we are departing soon.” Dressed, Ku leaves the room Seelnay grabs a couple of sets of clothes puts them in a travel bag and yells down the hall to Ku; “Are you packing for you or am I doing it?” Ku say he’ll get it and she should come and eat before they leave.

From the time of the vide message to the time they left their house was thirty–five minutes. Arriving at the docking berths Seelnay finds the stationmaster. “We ready to go?” the stationmaster nods. “Yes ma’am Admiral Sobbash called about an hour ago and said you’d be in a big hurry to go. She even filed your flight plans, here’s your clearance, all you have to do is load up and go.” Seelnay thanks the stationmaster. They load the shuttle and depart the Vorash platform.

Once on course and in plane space Seelnay glances at Ku he is sitting in the seat with this funny grin on his face. “Ku what are you thinking?” The expression changes on his face as he hears Seelnay’s words. “Oh nothing important just day dreaming.” Seelnay’s look sours. “Day dreaming huh, about naked Sol-Eros women I’ll bet.” Ku’s face is a dead give away. Seelnay seeing this decides to have a good laugh over this. “So you’re thinking about naked women? I wonder how the males look? If they’re real cute and the planet is advanced enough to have hot tubs this could be an interesting visit.”

Ku stares at Seelnay. She sits there stone-faced at first. She can see the rage building inside Ku and knowing it’s a small ship that they are going to spend the next three days in she starts to giggle, “Gotcha!” Ku starts to laugh he realizes why he married Seelnay in the first place. There is nothing that they couldn’t talk about before, so why should there be anything now? “Yeah honey, you’re right the though of a planet full of beautiful naked women. Well I am human after all.” Seelnay giggled. “Yeah a bunch of handsome hunks walking around naked, the thought kind of turned me on too.” They looked at each other and said in unison. “I’d look, but I’d never touch you mean too much to me.” Ku touches her face, and she smiles. Three days were going to go by very fast.

*********
“Kufadis, get a move on we’re going to be late.” Kufadis stood staring out in to the depths of this space. The view was breathtaking. He and Spoor had stopped for what he thought was a moment. Glancing at his creunoc he realized it was almost thirty minutes. He turns towards her took her and says, “Sorry but I’ve never seen such a view this system is.” She stops him “Charming? Beautiful? Something like that?” He shook his head. “No fascinating. It’s unlike anything I’ve laid my eyes on before.” Spoor stunned continues to walk towards the meeting place. She had never though of her home as fascinating before. To her it seemed very common looking. Shaking off that feeling, she returned to the present task. “Kufadis, I have to ask you again you’re sure you want to go through with this?” His increase in grip on her hand answered that question.

“There they are Kufadis.” Spoor said pointing through the window at the two women with their backs to them. “Mother is dressed in violet and sis is in that gaudy red she so enjoys wearing.” They walk through the door and Spoor’s mother catches sight of them first, “Hello Painiach how are you doing?” She pauses at the sight of Kufadis holding Spoor’s hand, “and who is this daughter?”

Spoor introduces Kufadis as a close friend and fellow officer. Her mother asks them to sit across from her and Spoor’s sister. They sit down and her mother continues, “It seems you’ve been here awhile. Why didn’t you announce your arrival sooner?” Spoor sits back and looks at her mother. She points to her chin, “You have purple ice cream on your chin daughter. You’ve been here long enough to see your father haven’t you?” Spoor nods. “I wanted him to meet Kufadis and I was dying to have some ice cream.”

At that moment Spoor’s sister stood and started a tirade, “Your father? You think! I’ve got news for you sister. He’s my father not yours and I’m sick and tired of him loving you more than I!” Spoor is stunned. Her sister continues, “He always loved you more, so that’s when I decided to destroy everything you two ever did together. The ice cream and everything else was my way of getting even with you for having his love. You think I’m joking? Ask mother she’ll tell you. You’re not of his seed. It seems mother had another lover and she drove him to commit suicide. That’s why my father felt sorry for you and took you in. He never loved me, like he’s loved you.”

Spoors mother stands and slaps her sister across the face. “You impertinent, ungrateful, little bitch! How dare you speak in public like that, and of those subjects! You are disowned! You will not use the family name rank or title from this moment on. Now get out of my sight!” Spoor’s sister turns to leave “You’ve not heard the end of this mother. Sister, I’ll have my way.” She storms out of the restaurant. Spoor is still in shock. Kufadis is looking around it’s seems most of the patrons have learned over the years that Spoor tirades are to be ignored for the betterment of one’s health. It looks as if her words had fallen on deaf ears. Kufadis feels his hand grow cool he turns back to Spoor. She is visibly crying and starting to shiver. Instinctively he takes her in his arms and tries to comfort her.

Observing this her mother asks, “Can you walk child?” Spoor nods. “Young man help my daughter to her feet and follow me please. We need to have a change to a more secure location. This place is too public to continue our discussion.” Kufadis helps Spoor stand. Her mother leaves by a side door, they follow her. Then they retrace their steps back to the ice cream shop.

Inside and settled in a corner booth, Spoor’s mother orders four dishes of ice cream. Spoor’s father returns with the ice cream to a surprise, the condition his daughter was in and knowing that this woman, his friend would never make a public appearance, he knew something was up. Sitting the tray down and joining them, Spoors mother spoke. “You were right. She confronted Painiach she blurted out her version of the truth and I’ve disowned her. However the damage is done. I guess we better have a family chat.”

Kufadis was feeling a little uneasy Spoor’s father picked up on it and said, “You better hear this too son. If my daughter thinks enough of you to place you in this position.” Kufadis interrupts. “I came willingly. I’d do it again without hesitation. I am very happy that you wish me to know, but the decision is up to her.” Kufadis takes Spoors hand and looks her in the face. “You want me to stay Admiral?” She nods and points to a bowl of ice cream, Kufadis takes it and passes it to her. She immediately starts to drown her sorrows in it.

Kufadis turns to her mother. “Is her sister correct or was she just being mean?” Spoor’s mother takes a breath and addresses him, “Both, she’s partially correct in saying Yanari is not Painiach’s father, but as for driving her real father insane that is a lie.“ Spoor stops eating her ice cream and looks at her mother. “Then you’re planning on giving me an explanation, telling me the truth, no more secrets?”

She nods her head, looking towards Kufadis she says, “It’s Kufadis isn’t it?” Kufadis nods. “How much has she told you about her family?” Sheepishly he speaks, “Very little, I believe she knows more about my family than I do hers. However the past hour has been quite a learning experience.” Her mother smiles, “Does the name Doryuni Spoor mean anything to you?” That name lit up a bunch of neurons with in Kufadis brain. He had learned in school that she was one of the predominant geneticists in the Empire.

Kufadis nods and says, “How should I address you ma’am?” Doryuni smiles she looks to Spoor. “He’s a smart one I see why you like him.” She returns to Kufadis, “Doryuni is fine, now that you know who I am. I need to explain who she is.” Spoor sits listening intently her ice cream slowly melting away. Kufadis is also glued to the edge of his seat.

The explanation starts with Doryuni producing a scanner from her bag. She first scans Kufadis and show him the results. “This is your DNA pattern notice that’s it completely active and linked.” She then scans Spoor she shows the pattern to Kufadis. Spoor is looking over his shoulder with great interest. “You notice at first her DNA looks like yours.” Then she magnifies a section of it, “See this dormant link? This is what makes her so special.”

Kufadis stares at the display. It’s been years since any kind of schooling dealing with genetics and he’s completely lost. Although he knows that this is not a normal gene sequence, he doesn’t know why. “What does the dormant set do?” Kufadis asked. Doryuni smiles. “It allows her to live beyond the decaying of the brain, when that starts those genes will become active and regenerate her brain, it should add another hundred years to her life, maybe more.”

Spoor drops her spoon and stares at her mother, “You’re telling me I might live another one hundred years? Another hundred years of boredom! How could you do this to me? What did I do to you to deserve this?” She was becoming furious Kufadis sensed this and took her hand. “Settle down, let her finish before you turn her out into space.”

Yanari and Doryuni sat looking at Painiach she was indeed furious. It was Yanari who first spoke, “Daughter once you know about the rest, I hope you can find it in your heart to for give your mother and I.” Doryuni continued, “Painiach the way you are, the way you’ve been is because of your other gene donor. He was as brilliant as I am. You are the result of thirty years work. I did love him; you must understand that, but not as much as I love Yanari. He was a member of the Royal Genetic Academy and he died a terribly lonely death. Those are the only things I can tell you about him for now.”

Spoor picks up her spoon and shakes it at her mother, “A member of the Royal Genetic Academy? You’re telling me my gene donor was an Ablïarsec?” Her mother nods, Spoor explodes, “How could you mix genes like that? Please don’t tell me you actually slept with him.”

Her mother nods again and takes over the conversation. “You listen to me before you rush to any further judgments. Our gene line was becoming weak, our family risked losing power, and you are our hope. Look at you, the first member of the family to reach this plateau of military achievement. Now you know where your aggressiveness and tenacity came from. You are a Spoor but you now have the added abilities of the gene line from the Royal Family. You do understand me daughter?”

Spoor lowers her spoon she leans back in her chair, “That’s why I could never face them one on one. It was being on the inside and outside at the same time. Mother do you have any idea what my career has been like? I’ll tell you it’s been living in fear of the Royal Family and now I’ve figured out why. It’s not fear it’s respect, it’s my genes telling me to respect the superior strain. That’s why I can never overcome this feeling of inadequacy when I’m around them isn’t it?” Doryuni nods. “It was a risk, I didn’t know till now that you actually were having problems like this. Had I known I would have told you sooner.”

Yanari and Kufadis sat silently the information being discussed surprised both of them. Finally Kufadis curiosity got the better of him. “I’m missing something here, what has all of this to do with your fears? Since when were fears genetic in origin?” Doryuni realizes Kufadis doesn’t understand the gravity of the situation. “Kufadis we are a product of our environment that is true, but how we handle that environment is genetic in origin. All of our traits, instincts they are all genetically controlled. Painiach is a highly modified Abh. Sometimes those modifications come at a price. I think I can help you help her get over these fears but I’m not really sure.”

Kufadis stares at Doryuni this information it’s too much. The woman he loves is genetically faulty? The words fly around in his head. Yanari sees the confusion and finally anger start to show on his face. As Kufadis tries to rise from his seat, he’s firmly reseated by Yanari. “Settle down my boy your making a lot out of a little problem, granted it may seem a major issue. Now that it’s out in the open we can work it out. It’s not the death sentence you think it is. Settle down lad.”

Through all of this Admiral Spoor sat eating ice cream. Not only the dish brought for her, but also she had managed to consume three of the four dishes the Yanari brought with him. Doryuni watched her daughter finish the third dish and reach for the fourth. “That’s enough Painiach, I’ve never seen you devour ice cream like this before and you also seem fairly calm considering the admissions of the past half hour.”

Spoor reaches for the bowl. “It’s comfort food mother. The more I eat the more comfortable I am. I’ve accepted the fact that you decided to concoct a DNA stew and it ended up looking like me. I am Abh after all. We never have sex and wait for the results. We always have to tinker with our offspring to improve the species, so what’s the big deal? I’m the latest and greatest model. I’ve lived with it this long. What’s a extra hundred years?” She looks over to Kufadis. “You think you can put up with me for a extra hundred years?” Kufadis is finally in shock. He’s left speechless.

Doryuni takes her scanner and scans her daughter while she eating the last bowl of ice cream. Spoors statement bears a lot of truth all of her readings are in the normal category in fact she’s actually the calmest her mother has seen her in years. She’s eaten ice cream before and it never affected her like this. Doryuni makes another pass with the scanner. Annoyed Spoor tries to swat it away. “Put your toy up mother, can’t you see I’m trying to enjoy this.” Standing their reading the data Doryuni smiles, “Seems I’m not the only one who’s keeping secrets.”

Spoor grabs the scanner she starts to read the data. “Very funny mother. Is this your idea of a joke? Well it’s badly done. You’ve rigged the readings.” Doryuni shakes her head, “Clear the scanner and scan yourself if you think it’s a rouse. Scan me if you wish to verify the units functioning correctly.” She clears the unit and scans Kufadis then she scans herself. Tabbing through the results she exclaims, “There is no way! This is a very cruel joke.” She hands the scanner to Kufadis. “You’re the tactical genius. You got an explanation for this?” Kufadis reads the scanner he goes pale then starts to blush. “Is this thing correct? Does this mean?” Spoor nods. “Yes, it seems I’m about three weeks pregnant! Now when did this happen? Because the scanner says it ours.”

Spoors statement about knocks everybody off their seats. Kufadis scratches his head and Yanari stares in amazement. Taking advantage of the moment Spoor says, “You know father I could use a big bowl of ice cream about now I really need its calming effects.” Yanari nods he leaves the table to return in moments with a bowl piled high in purple ice cream. Spoor immediately digs in. Kufadis watches her devour the bowl. He looks to Doryuni, “So it happened three weeks ago?”

Doryuni went pale, “Don’t tell me you two don’t remember.” Pulling the spoon from her face Spoor spoke, “Very good mother, it seems the first time I had sex not only did I get pregnant, but I don’t remember it happening and since Kufadis is also at a loss this is going to be an interesting evening.” Kufadis sat trying to figure out when they would have had a chance to be that close and the numbers weren’t working for him finally Doryuni said. “You can add another ten days if that would help. The scanner shows from time of fertilization. Not the introduction of genetic material, there is travel time to consider.”

Kufadis figures again that would make it a little over four weeks ago; a smile crept across his face. Spoor took notice of it. “So you figured it out when and where?” Kufadis smiled. “After Her Highness party, you know which one I mean. We went back to the ship and ended up asleep together but I never touched you. Well at least I thought I didn’t?” Spoor shook her head. “We were pretty tired after that party but I think I would have noticed something?”

Unable to hold back his laughter Yanari starts laughing. He grabs a spoon and takes some of Spoor’s ice cream “It’s true like mother like daughter! Your mother made the same comment when she found out she was going to have your sister.” His face changes, “Wonder how she’s going to accept this news, I guess she’ll probably be furious.”

Doryuni interrupts, “She not the problem, Painiach is. It’s a little too early to transfer the fetus to a birthing chamber. Although I should conduct a complete examination and see how much adjusting needs to be done.” She picks up the scanner and head towards Spoor. Spoor lays down her spoon and stands to face her mother. “Just what do you think you’re doing mother?”

Doryuni stops and points the scanner towards Spoors abdomen, “Checking on my grandchild’s health. You got a problem with that?” Spoor pushes the scanner aside. “Checking on health is allowed, messing with genes is not allowed. Oh mother, I plan on carrying this child to term, OKAY?” Doryuni raises the scanner again. “I’ll answer that question after I have the results.” She scans Spoor again then sits at the table.

Kufadis leans over to Spoor and whispers in her ear. “I was your first time?” She about chokes on her ice cream, “Can we discuss this subject later Kufadis? In front of them is not the proper place.” She motions towards her parents. Kufadis nods. Spoor continues to eat her ice cream.

“The initial scan shows no abnormalities in the fetus, do you want to know the gender of the child?” Spoor raises her head looks at Kufadis he looks back she turns to her mother and says, “NO! We enjoy surprises. So your saying it’s going to be a normal child no tinkering required?” Doryuni still looking at the scanner replies, “At this time the child appears to be normal. You should have another examination in three weeks to verify the initial results. So how long are you planning on staying this time?”

Spoor went to answer as Kufadis creunoc went off. She turned to him, “Well what is it?” He kept reading “It’s a message from Admiral Sobbash it says.” Kufadis face showed no emotion, removing his creunoc he handed it to Spoor. “Better read it for your self Admiral.” Spoor takes the creunoc and starts reading a very detailed report of all events that have happened since Ekuryua left for Sol-Eros. When she reaches the part about the ambassadors ship imploding she grew pale then as she read the results of the data collected she grew very concerned.

Finally she made it to the part where Sobbash was heading for the system with the fleet and her reasons for such a movement. The report ended with a summery of her last run in with Atosuryua and a recommendation that Atosuryua be reassigned for the preservation of her health. Seeing this Spoor busted out laughing, she passed the creunoc back to Kufadis. “Read the last paragraph.” Kufadis read it, he busted out laughing as well; “Well I though you got pretty rough Admiral. It seems Admiral Sobbash can be more direct than you can.” Spoor nods. “Oh I wish I could have been there for that. Now Kufadis how far from here, to the Sord where the rendezvous is?”

Kufadis consults his creunoc. “About thirty eight hours depends if we go direct or via the Sords. Your territory overlaps the space in question so if we do the direct route.” He shows the display to Spoor and continues, “We arrive on the event side of the Sord. We would be in the same space as the Attack Frigate. If we entered the Sord we could be slightly ahead of Admiral Sobbash’s fleet, to do that we would have to leave here in less than three hours. Using normal space we’d need to leave here in five hours to arrive ahead of the main fleet.” Spoor stares at the course choices, “I see normal space is more direct although plane space is faster it’s a longer distance. Lets plan on leaving in four hours and proceed using normal space. Once in range we’ll contact Commander Ekuryua then wait for Admiral Sobbash.”

“Painiach you just can’t walk off now. What about the child? What if something goes wrong?” Doryuni was expressing what she thought were genuine concerns. Spoor addresses her and them, “Mother I’m a Admiral in the Star Forces. This is part of my duty, as far as the child is concerned. The Lashkau is not some barge wondering around space. It’s a ship of the line and very well equipped. It has birthing chambers and staff capable of operating them. Should I have trouble with the child there are plenty of options. Trust me, I’ll let no harm come to myself or the child so your fears are groundless.” Doryuni started to argue, and then she saw the look on her daughters face. Any words she had would be useless. “Be safe my daughter stop by when you’ve completed your mission.”

Spoor finishes her ice cream hugs both of them. Then she asks her father, “You think you could send some ice cream to the ship before we leave? It would be a great help.” He nods, “Just don’t eat it all in one sitting OKAY?” Spoor smiles. “Okay father or should I say grandfather?”

Yanari turns to Kufadis. “Take care of her and have a safe journey.” Kufadis smiles. “I’ll take care of both of them you have my word.” Spoor faces Doryuni. “Mother it will be alright and I promise when we come back. I’ll not run off to space till we are done talking everything out.” Doryuni hugs her, “Take care daughter have a safe journey.” Kufadis and Spoor bid them good-bye and leave.

Returning to ship Kufadis decides to stop at the viewing point where he stopped earlier. Spoor stands along side him. “Taking in the view before we leave Kufadis?” He turns towards her. “Yes and no, before we get to the ship and get busy there are a couple of things I’d like settled. The first time thing for one and I’d like to discuss how this child was conceived.” Spoor takes his hand and looks out to the vastness of space. “I’m not sure how you were raised Kufadis but I was taught there were two kinds of sex. First was just sex and the second was romantic sex.” Kufadis face reflecting in the window glows red with embarrassment.

Spoor sees this and goes on. “Then you understand me? I’ve had sex before. But I was planning on what we had to be very romantic, seems fate had other plans. Although it doesn’t mean we can’t have romantic sex sometime later on it’s just that this child wasn’t conceived that way.” Spoor continues to look out the window. She’s also watching Kufadis face it’s gone to a neutral look. “I don’t remember a lot of that evening you speak of and it seems neither do you but since we did wake up entwined. I can only imagine that our subconscious passions kicked in and well you know what happened.”

Kufadis was still looking out the window. “Then it doesn’t disturb you that you were unaware of what happened?” Spoor smiles. “Subconsciously I’m aware of it, had I not wanted it to happen my mind would have fought you, it still controls this body.” She squeezes Kufadis hand. “Face it I’m going to have a baby and you’re the father. When the time come to explain things, well, we’ll cross that bridge when it comes Okay?” Kufadis nods.

Staring out the window Spoor speaks once more in a very serious tone. “Now that you’re going to be a father to be you can stop eyeing that little Decca Commander down in the engineering department. Don’t try to deny it I watched you two the last time you were together. There’s only one thing she wants. In your pants then in your wallet.” Kufadis face grows angry, then becomes understanding as Spoor’s words sink in he pulls her towards him. “Okay I was planning on ending the relationship. She was becoming too possessive. I’ll call her a learning experience and go on from there, and you’ll be good too, right Admiral?” Spoor smiles. “Fine Kufadis I’ll behave too, guess we are going to have to become more responsible.” They start the long walk back to the Lashkau; the ship would launch in two hours and be in communications range of Commander Ekuryua’s ship within thirty hours

*********
“Are you getting anywhere with that last message Jinto?” Lafiel’s words fell on muffled hearing; Jinto sat glue to the display playing the ambassadors last message back. The transmission had occurred at the same moment the ship imploded, the distortion to the signal had left most of it unintelligible. Since they were waiting for Sobbash to arrive. Jinto had decided to spend the time trying to clean it up and see what it’s contents were, he was not having very good luck. “I’ve got pieces of it Lafiel, only a few words at a time. Nothing that I can really make any sense of.” He raises his head from the display “How much longer till Sobbash gets here?” Lafiel glances at her creunoc, “About thirty hours. Why don’t you take a break from that and get something to eat with me.”

Jinto pauses the display turns towards Lafiel and say’s, “That the best offer I’ve had all day. After you my dear.” Standing up and placing a kiss on her cheek they leave together. Making their way to the dining room they order a light dinner sit down and proceed to eat it. Throughout dinner Jinto is preoccupied with his project back in their quarters. Lafiel had asked him the same question a couple of times and she was being ignored. She decided that Jinto was going to hear her words. She reached over to Jinto took a handful of ribs and squeezed, “Ow! Lafiel why did you do that?”

Lafiel smiles. “Now that I have your attention Jinto, I have this real uneasy feeling about going on with this mission, something does not feel right about it. I’d like your honest opinion on this and to have an open discussion about it.” Lafiel hesitates then continues, “Jinto I’ve had a different version of the dream, again. We’re no longer in space but on a strange planet the images are so real, they are really scaring me. I forced myself to stay asleep last time it happened. The ending wasn’t pretty at all.”

She takes his hand. He can feel her cool trembling hand. Her face is showing sadness and deep concern at the same time. Jinto pulls her into his arms they now sit along side each other. “I wish you’d said something sooner Lafiel, we are sort of committed to doing this mission. I tell you. Let’s discuss this, then talk with Sobbash and Samson when they get here.” Lafiel nods she pulls herself closer to Jinto. “Right now Jinto, can you just hold me I feel so secure when you hold me close.” The food gets cold, Jinto continues to hold Lafiel tightly, its Ekuryua who finds them that way.

She pulls out a chair and sits across from them. In the meantime Lafiel has dosed off in his arms, Ekuryua motions to Jinto. He sees her and acknowledges her presence she speaks softly. “I’m launching a communication probe into the Sord so we can speak with Sobbash. Is there anything you wish me to relay to her?” Jinto shields Lafiel ears with his hands, “Tell them to be prepared to have a mission reassessment conference when they arrive. She’s in a panic about going forward. I’m not sure if it’s really wise either. Unless Sobbash and Samson have more information I too feel real uneasy about proceeding.” This sudden admission from Jinto leaves Ekuryua a little stunned; regaining her composure she stands and starts to leaves them. “I’ll express your concerns to Sobbash. Jinto, is she going to be alright?”

Jinto looks her way. “I don’t know Noel, I really don’t this time. She’s got me really concerned.” The look on Jinto’s face confirms Ekuryua’s gut feeling. It’s time to tell Sobbash everything else. This will have to include the nightmare she witnessed recently. It was a very scary event, which she’s told no one else about until now. Ekuryua makes her way to the bridge and launches the probe. It takes almost an hour to establish communications with Sobbash. Ekuryua sits in her cabin waiting for the news that contact has been established. She’s done a lot of soul searching in the past hour. She stills stands by her first thoughts of telling Sobbash all no matter what the repercussions are.

“Captain, Admiral Sobbash is on line delay is twenty seconds.” Ekuryua turns her display on and waits for Sobbash’s first words. “Captain Ekuryua status report.” Ekuryua informs them of their current position. She also informs Sobbash of Jinto’s request, then she grows silent. Sobbash hears her words, sees the look on her face and asks, “There’s more isn’t there Ekuryua?”

Ekuryua takes a deep breath and explains the scene she came across two days ago outside Lafiel and Jinto’s quarters. “I was passing down the corridor and heard Her Highness screaming. Using the emergency pass code I entered their quarters. I found Lafiel in the corner of her bunk, a pillow tightly wrapped in her arms. Her eyes were opened wide but she did not see me. All she did was sit there holding the pillow and pleading.”

Sobbash interrupts, “Jinto don’t die please. Jinto don’t die! Then she fell into a deep sleep. Am I correct?” Stunned Ekuryua nods. “How do you know?” Sobbash smiles, the time delay causes a pause she continues. “It was at Lobnas II you were on the bridge I was walking by her quarters. It was right after she decided to abandon him on the planet and before she transferred to the transport ship. I walked in on the same display. I really though she’d gotten over that. Now I understand why she won’t let him out of her sight. We’ve got a problem if that is the dream she’s reliving. We’ve got a big problem Ekuryua. Just to let you know Ku and Seelnay docked with us about six hours ago. I think it’s a good thing she’s here maybe she can get through to Lafiel. Ekuryua hold down the fort for another twenty eight hours and what ever you do don’t tell Jinto about Lafiel’s dream.”

Ekuryua nods. “As you wish Sobbash but soon or later somebody’s going to have to tell him. I don’t want it to be me, I’d rather it was you.” Ekuryua’s words make it to Sobbash’s ears her mood changes. “You’re right coming from me would be better than you trying it. Seeing I was the first one to find her that way. See you soon Sobbash out.” The display dims Ekuryua turns off the unit and leans back in her chair. It will be just over a day she will have to wait. She was sure she could do that.

Kufadis had just finished breaking off his relationship with a certain Decca Commander. She had taken it very well he thought, since they were never more than conversational friends he felt really good about the outcome. His pace quicken he realized he was going to be late relieving Spoor.

Arriving on the bridge he consulted with Admiral Spoor before she went off duty. Her only request was to be awaken when they were in communications range of Ekuryua’s ship. As she leaves Spoor whispered to Kufadis, “When the first officer relieves you in about four hours. Stop by my cabin Okay?” Kufadis smiles a little sly smile and Spoor leaves the bridge. Rounding the last corner that led to her quarters Spoor doubles over in pain and collapses to the floor the lights fade slowly away.

“Admiral, Admiral Spoor!” The first officers words fall on unresponsive ears, opening his creunoc he say’s “Medical emergency section G one forty-seven just aft of Admiral Spoor’s quarters medical team respond.” He then calls the bridge; Kufadis answers. “Commander you better meet me in the medical bay. I’ve found the Admiral unconscious outside her quarters the med team is arriving now.” Kufadis is stunned so is most of the bridge crew he looks at the weapons officer. “Take over you’ll know where I’ll be.” With that Kufadis hurries off the bridge.

Two bowls of purple ice cream were on the tray. Yanari sat the tray down on the table. Then he pulled out a chair and sat facing Doryuni. She sat facing him showing evidence that she had been crying. “I finished going over Painiach’s last scan, she always was an impatient little fool.” Yanari had a look of confusion on his face, finally he asked. “She did something improper? I’m not understanding you Doryuni.” Setting the report on the table she said, “You can’t rush nature. We Abh are very advanced compared to the landers on the surface but we hold one thing in common with our land based sisters you can’t rush getting pregnant. Whether you’re a lander on birth suppressants or an Abh requiring chemical stimulation. You should take the recommended dosage. In this case more is not beneficial." Yanari took a bowl of ice cream off the tray and took a bite. “Painiach tried to speed things along, will it affect the baby?” Doryuni took a bowl and took a spoon full. “I don’t know. I do know one thing her hormones are at very dangerous levels. Depending when she took her last dosage before she found out she was pregnant. She’s either on a slow decline or heading for a major crash.”

*********
Arriving at the medical facility the first officer stops Kufadis. “Commander they’re working on her now. They asked me to keep you company, please stay here with me.” Kufadis lurched towards the door but the first officer had a firm grip on his shoulder. “Commander please don’t make me do something we’ll both regret.” Seeing the look on the first officer’s face, Kufadis relaxed and took a seat along side him.

The first officer then relates the events that led to his finding Admiral Spoor. “Commander it’s was luck that I decided to relieve you sooner or the Admiral might have laid there for another couple of hours.” Kufadis put his head in his hands. He thanked the first officer for everything he did. Then he asked one question. “Was she awake when you found her?” He shook his head. “Sorry Commander she was out cold, breathing on her own but she was completely unresponsive.”

“She’s going to be out for a while.” The doctor had just entered the room and picked up on the conversation Kufadis was having. Facing them he continued, ”I have to admit it was a well placed blow and who ever delivered it if they were any stronger they’d broken her back again. As it is she’s got a bruised liver, spleen and other internal injuries.” He paused again and before Kufadis could speak he said, “She’s lost the baby, I’m sorry Commander.” Kufadis stood his rage was building inside. “Blow? Somebody hit her and killed our child?”

The doctor hearing this went on. “Commander you weren’t going to keep that child, who ever hit the Admiral did you both a favor. It seems the Admiral had loaded up on cycle starting pills. Her hormones were so out of whack that she would have spontaneously aborted fairly soon. She tried to rush a natural process, Commander right now she’s resting. What I suggest you do is find who ever did this. You have a criminal on board this ship. After you have that accomplished task, then you can morn your loss.”

The two officers stood looking at each other then to the doctor. “Can you give me a idea of what she was struck with?” The doctor nods. “Yes I can by the size of the bruise and the tears on her uniform I’d say it was a personal oxygen cylinder, like the ones the engineering section uses. The guilty one will have pieces of her uniform imbedded in the tank cover and the regulator assembly.”

Kufadis turns bright red the first officer goes to block his path. “Commander don’t do it!” Kufadis rolls his creunoc to his lips. “Security detail meet me in engineering.” He looks at the first office. “You’re coming with me aren’t you?” Still blocking his path the first officer says. “Commander what are you planning?”

Kufadis smiles. “I’m going to arrest a criminal. It’s up to Admiral Spoor what the punishment is. I’m just capturing a criminal.” He moves aside then following Kufadis the two of them head for engineering. The security detail was waiting outside the engineering section. After a quick search the cylinder and it’s owner were located. Restrained the Decca Commander stood defiant Kufadis stood before her. “Why? Why did you do it?” She smiled. “With her out of the way you were going to be all mine. So did I kill her?” Kufadis steps back and looks her in the eye. “She’ll live but you should know she was pregnant. You know that taking the live of an unborn Abh is far worse than killing the Admiral outright. She’ll be the one who decides your fate.”

The Decca Commanders face pales Kufadis says, “Put her in the brig and watch her very carefully.” The detail takes the Decca Commander off. Kufadis turns to the first officer. “Go. Take command of the ship, as soon as we can speak with Commander Ekuryua establish communication and notify me immediately. You know where I’ll be.” The first officer turns and leaves for the bridge. Kufadis returns to the medical facility he grabs a chair and sits beside Admiral Spoor, it’s something he’s done before.

“Captain incoming communications, Commander Kufadis of the Lashkau is calling for you, Count Hyde and Her Highness.” Picking up her pace Ekuryua heads for Jinto and Lafiel’s quarters. Finding them awake, she notifies them of the incoming message and has it piped to their terminal. The display comes on and a very bedraggled Kufadis greets them.

“We are about eight hours from your present position but that’s not the reason I’ve called. I don’t know any other way to say this so please bear with me.” The display fades to a report it summarizes what had happened aboard the Lashkau.

After a few minutes the report fades away and Kufadis returns he is visibly shaken. “What you don’t know is that Admiral Spoor was pregnant at the time of the attack. She’s lost the baby and is still unconscious. When she comes too it would be nice if all of you could be here.”

There is silence in the room. Jinto, Lafiel and Noel stand motionless in shock and not wanting to accept what Kufadis has said. Finally Noel speaks. “Commander we’ll be here for you and the Admiral hopefully she’ll wait till you’re closer to come around, then we’d be happy to shuttle over.” Kufadis stares at Noel in disbelief then he checks his position. “I’m sorry Commander. You’re right. I guess I should have waited till we were closer. I’m sorry my mistake.” Kufadis confusion was apparent. Jinto motioned Noel and Lafiel out of the room then he started a conversation with Kufadis.

Standing in the corridor Noel and Lafiel were in shock finally Noel spoke. “Spoor was attacked and she was pregnant?” Lafiel shook her head. “It’s been years since anybody attacked a flag officer. I don’t understand this at all. Is it this space we are in or what is it? Things are running a muck they’re not making any sense.” The door opened and Jinto called them back inside. He explained to them what Kufadis had told him about Admiral Spoor. He also said that he had spoken with the doctor and first officer of the Lashkau. They would keep them apprised that the Lashkau was now in high-speed cruise, and should arrive in a little over four hours. Noel said she had made contact with Sobbash she said Ku and Seelnay were with them and their arrival was still twenty-two hours off.

Its very simple, Lafiel you shall say.
In return I'd like to call you Jinto."

“What news Scholar?” Erin stood looking at the learned one’s writings. “Priestess there is one ship just outside the Sord. It launched a probe I believe to be a relay link into the Sord about twelve hours ago. There has been one communication between that ship and a ship in the Sord stream. I’m sure of one thing the ship sitting outside of the Sord is a warship. I also believe it to be Abh, but why send a warship to this system unless the Abh plan to invade us?”

Erin takes a deep breath. “Keep watching Scholar we’ve had warships before and they’ve done us no harm although you might want to bring planetary defenses to standby as long as the reactor is stable that is.” She leaves the room. The Scholar still keeps her books open. They see most of the space around Sol-Eros. She is ever vigilant always watching.

Ramaj stood in her office Kenesh had just departed. She brought news of the destruction of the Ambassadors ship. The inability to contact Admiral’s Spoor and Sobbash, and most disturbing there was no sign of Commander Ekuryua’s ship. It was like they had become completely invisible. The Star Forces were searching from Ekuryua’s last position at Kenesh’s request. She had sent out an inquiry when Ekuryua’s first report never arrived at the Capital. So far they had found nothing and there options were limited. Resources in that sector of the Empire were very scarce.

“Mother do you have a moment?” Debeusec, standing in the doorway asked. Ramaj motioned him to enter and asked, “Yes. What have you learned?” Debeusec said that Dustain had just finished a complete physical examination. His health was good except for a persistent headache that Dr Sasoum has traced to his sense organ. It seems that the UMK had sewn a flap of skin over it and through the years several minor infections had scared the surface of the organ. It was the scar tissue rubbing on the flap was sending pain through the organ and into his brain.

“Doctor Sasoum would like to perform surgery on Dustain to remove the flap and restore the organ function if that’s possible. She won’t know till she gets in there. She said it should be a fairly straightforward procedure. I’m here to ask your permission to proceed.” Ramaj nods her approval as Debeusec turns to leave she speaks. “Son let me know how it turns out, and, Lafiel’s ship has disappeared. We are looking for it, but resources are so limited in that part of the Empire.” Debeusec stops stands up straight and said, “I’ll let you know about Dustain, Lafiel’s fine. I can feel it.” Debeusec leaves the room. Ramaj returns to staring into space her thoughts express her mood. “I wish I could share your optimism my son I hope Lafiel is as you say, fine.” She approaches her desk and turns off the room lights. Now the only light is from outside the dimly lit star field that she is looking into.

Even at sub light speeds the ship had a rhythm to it, an almost soothing song that it sung. Kufadis had been sitting along side Spoors bed. She was resting comfortably however her hormonal levels were still elevated. Rising from his chair and quietly stretching Kufadis went out to the waiting room. Something warm out of a machine to eat and drink was his thought. Served by the food dispenser he sat and dined in peace. The last thirty hours had taken a toll on his being. A chair moves at the table and the chief medical officer seats himself in front of Kufadis. “The test are back Commander, the Admiral is going to recover. I’m not going to say any more till she’s healed and we run some more tests.” Kufadis nods in acceptance of the Doctor’s statement. The blow did do damage but until Spoor healed it was unknown about her abilities to carry a child again. “How soon will she wake up?” The doctor looks at Kufadis, “When she’s ready Commander, the longer she’s resting the better she’ll be when she wakes. Unlike the last time it’s her body dictating things this time. She’s on no pain medication at all.” The Doctor smiles, “Hopefully soon Commander her signs are becoming normal.” The Doctor rises from the table and leaves. Kufadis continues to finish his meal. The ship hums its melody.

Scanning plane space stimulated her senses. It had been a long time since she sat in the center seat of a warship. Pulling rank and confining Atosuryua to the base brig, well she would deal with that subject when they returned. At first she was going to commandeer her flagship, then Sobbash found these two ships that weren’t loyal to Atosuryua and took them instead. The transport Captains were making excellent progress being the slowest ships, the research and hospital ships followed, with one Attack Frigate leading and one bringing up the rear of the convoy. They were sixteen hours from exiting plane space at Ekuryua’s location. Disconnecting herself from the sensor net, she asked Samson to meet her in the briefing room by her cabin. Handing the center seat to the first office she left the bridge.

Walking towards the briefing room Sobbash was beginning to feel at home, at first a desk assignment intrigued her but later on it became boring, although helping Samson in the garden had some unique advantages. She did miss space. Entering the room she found Samson sitting at the table waiting for her. “You must have been pretty close to the briefing room when I called you?”

Leaning back in the chair he said, “I’ve been here for awhile thinking about what Ekuryua told you about Her Highness. She was a basket case when we got to Lobnas II, if she’s reliving those memories.” Samson takes a deep breath and looks at Sobbash who is leaning against the bulkhead listening to him. ”You know she was fully armed when we landed on Lobnas II?” Sobbash shakes her head. Samson continues. “It was all Tomasof and I could do to keep her from setting out on her own. She’d leveled that planet to find him, I’m sure of it. If she’s having those feelings again and anything threatens them, they are on an Attack Frigate you know.”

Sobbash steps towards the table and pulls the chair facing Samson back. She sits in it looking into his eyes and says, ”Ekuryua will stop her from doing anything rash. That’s one reason I order them to stay in normal space till we arrive. There’s going to be a little conference before we approach Sol-Eros. Everyone will understand his or her part before we proceed. That’s what I wanted to talk with you about. Just how do we approach her if she is actually in that kind of a mood?” Samson smiled, “With drawn laser pistols!” Sobbash placed her right elbow on the table, laid her head in her hand covering her eyes and spoke. “That’s not the answer I wanted from you. I want to talk with her not battle her.”

*********
“Kufadis?” the familiar sound of her voice woke him. He stood and approached the bed. “Hi. How long have you been awake?” Spoor resting on her back eyes still closed spoke. “A few moments, what happened?” Kufadis explained everything that had happened, leaving one detail out for the moment. Spoor took everything in and asked, “I lost the baby right?” The tears dripped off his face and landed on her cheek. Moister formed at the edge of her eyelids and gently streamed down her face. She reached for and found his hand. Grasping it tightly, time froze for them. The information was out in the open, but neither of them wanted to accept what was happening to them now. Kufadis watched the tears flow from her closed eyes and she felt the emptiness with in her. An hour later she released her grip and fell into a deep peaceful looking sleep.

Kufadis left the room. Once in the corridor he completely broke down. It was the medical chief who found him. “Commander come you can’t stay here.” He led Kufadis back to the waiting room there he told the Doctor everything. “I’m not surprised that she knew she’d lost the baby. You have to understand some women instinctively know these things and others never know they’re pregnant until the child becomes visible.” Kufadis sat back in the chair he went to speak, but the lack of useful sleep had finally caught up with him. His eyes closed and in front of the Doctor he too fell into a deep sleep. The Doctor left him; stopping at the nurse’s station he instructed the personal on duty to keep an eye on both of them and to notify him of any changes. Before the Doctor left the ward he checked on Spoor. She was sleeping peacefully.

“Captain. The first office of the Lashkau is hailing you.” Ekuryua stood faced the main display and said, “Put him on.” The image appears, “Commander Ekuryua we are approaching your position. Commander Kufadis sends his greetings and requests you and the Ambassadors come aboard the Lashkau at your earliest convenience.” Ekuryua nods “We’ll need a half-hour is that acceptable?” “Contact us when you’re ready to depart, Lashkau out.” The display dims, and Ekuryua leaves the bridge. Riding the lift to the deck Lafiel and Jinto were on she thought, “This is just what I didn’t need, to go over there and see Admiral Spoor lying in a hospital bed. I despise these kind of visits.”

Standing at their quarters Ekuryua presses the door chime. A moment later the door opened Jinto stepped outside and let the door shut behind him. “What is it Ekuryua?” Jinto asked. “The Lashkau is approaching us. Commander Kufadis requests our presence on board the ship, all three of us.” Jinto shook his head. “Lafiel just fell asleep I won’t wake nor will I leave her. Tell Kufadis.” He notices the look in Ekuryua’s eyes. “Never mind, I’ll tell him”

Jinto activates his creunoc and calls the Lashkau. He sends his regrets. But at the present time Her Highness is unable to leave the ship. “When the time is right I’ll contact you.” He looks at Ekuryua. “Noel, Lafiel has got to get some meaningful rest or we’re not going to Sol-Eros. Right now she’s an unstable reactor about to lose containment. I’ve never seen her this way and going to see Spoor in her present condition is out of the question. Now if you and Risch wish to go and assess the situation. I would be very happy, but for now Lafiel’s not leaving this ship for any reason.” Ekuryua nods turns and walks off. Jinto opens the door and steps back into the cabin. Lafiel is resting peacefully he picks up his book opens it to where he was before Ekuryua came to the door and continues to read.

Down the corridor, bypassing the main lift and sliding down the stairwell. Ekuryua made her way to her quarters. She secured the door behind her. Powered up the communications console, set the mode to a high encryption and contacted Sobbash. Sobbash’s face appeared and before she could say a word Ekuryua brought her up to date. She told Sobbash everything. Spoors condition, and the presence of the Lashkau. Lafiel’s inability to function, and Jinto’s insistence that until he figures out what’s wrong with Lafiel. They’re not going anywhere. Finally she expressed her continuing doubt about the present situation, and whether she could handle any more load. She looks exhausted and very stressed. Something Sobbash had not seen in her before.

“I understand Ekuryua we are still three hours from the Sord. Sit tight help is on the way.” Closing the link Sobbash turns to Samson. “Now what do we do? The Lashkau is there, Spoor’s injured. Lafiel’s out of commission for the moment. Jinto’s going to be about useless and Ekuryua’s on the verge of having a breakdown. And still Sol-Eros looms we have to go, we can’t leave them to.”

Samson reaches for her hand. “Don’t you go to pieces on me too. Let’s get there, have a good look at the total situation and decide then. Right now we don’t have all the facts we are doing a lot of guessing.” She squeezes his hand “Guess you’re right. I think we better get some rest before we get there. Looks like we are going to be very busy.” Samson rises from his seat. “Guess I’ll see you on the bridge in three hours Admiral.” Sobbash smiles. “Wouldn’t miss it for the universe Samson. I’ll be there.”

*********
Erin dashes up the steps that lead to the Scholar’s office. Entering the room she found her deep in her books. Without moving the Scholar spoke, “There is another warship this one is twice as big as the first one. There has been two communications between those ships and now the first ship has transmitted into the Sord again. I can see ships in the Sord stream. How many, it’s too early to tell but Priestess this does not look good.” Erin took notice of a small distortion in the Scholars books. “Those are the ships in the Sord?” Scholar nods. “Yes Priestess I don’t think there is more than six of them but there speed is much slower than that of the first ship. I’ll keep watching and when they are recognizable I’ll contact you again.” Erin watches for a moment then she leaves Scholar. As she left the building she wonder if it was time to bring this information to the High Council. She decided she would wait till the Scholar had all the details. Those ships were still several hours from Sol-Eros there was time to prepare the defenses if needed.

*********
Standing at the cabin door Sobbash paused, then she pressed the chime. The door opened, “Come in Admiral I’ve been expecting you.” reached Sobbash’s ears. Entering the cabin there Seelnay sat, a cup of tea in her hand. “Sit down Admiral, would you like something to drink?” Sobbash pulled a chair from beneath the table and sat facing Seelnay. “No thank you. How did you know I was coming?” Seelnay smiled. “After the way Samson almost dragged Ku out of here I figured you’d be along shortly and I was right. So what is the problem with Her Highness?” Sobbash was aghast. Did Seelnay read her mind and if she did what does she already know? Sobbash had decided earlier to confide in Seelnay. She guessed it was about time.

“Seelnay tell me how you met Lafiel?” Seelnay described the entire confrontation that occurred at Febdash. ”After Her Highness killed the Baron, the former Baron helped her and Count Hyde refuel and then they left. Thanks to the Royal Family I got my present business. The next time I saw her was aboard your ship on our way to the Hyde system. So when did you meet her Admiral?”

Sobbash explained that she was assigned to Lafiel’s first command. She then went through their first battles, their being stranded in plane space and the loss of the first Basroil. Seelnay sat listening intently, it was like she was expecting. “Admiral something else happened didn’t it?” Sobbash nods. She relates their mission to Lobnas II and all of the subsequent events that lead up to Lafiel seeing Seelnay again. Seelnay leaned back in her seat. “That fills in part of the blank, something else happened, something deeper and darker didn’t it Admiral?”

Sobbash looks into Seelnay’s face. It is like she already knew and was waiting for Sobbash to confirm her suspicions. Sobbash related all she knows about the mental attack that Lafiel suffered through. Seelnay’s face lit up.

“So that’s it. She had her dignity stripped from her. You know, she’s still looking for it?” Sobbash blinked. “What! How did you come to that decision?” Seelnay sensing Sobbash’s confusion set it out like this. “At Lobnas II she chose duty over, Count Hyde and it tore her apart. She found him alive but couldn’t express her feelings to him. Then Count Hyde goes home and gives up everything to stay with Her Highness. She still can’t bring herself to express her feelings.” So far Sobbash is following Seelnay.

Now Seelnay pitches the balance of her theory. “When the mind attack happened it left her completely vulnerable and who saved her? Count Hyde did. Up until then it had been, I saved your life you saved mine a fairly even trade off. Starting from the time they left Febdash. Now Her Highness is deeply indebted to Count Hyde and she still is having trouble expressing herself.” Sobbash moves her head from side to side. “Then how do you explain the present dream sequence that she is having?” Sobbash proceeds to explain the dream that both she and Ekuryua have witnessed. Seelnay sat a second.

“That’s pretty simple. She’s afraid he’ll die before she can express her feelings to him. Look Admiral, the ceremony was a rushed affair. She seemed happy when we left. Then she gets aboard Ekuryua’s ship heads for the unknown and she breaks down again. Let me be honest, Her Highness is not the dynamic individual I met at Febdash and I’ll bet she’s not the same person you first served with?” Sobbash nods. Seelnay continues, “The first change was after Lobnas II but the major change was after the mental games were played on her correct?”

Sobbash nods. “Seelnay if you could have seen her, she seemed so child like so.” Seelnay interrupts. “I have seen that side and it scares me. I admired that self-assured Princess. Now all I see is a frightened little girl trying desperately to find security. She’s saying and doing things without thinking and without direction. She doesn’t deserve to be in any kind of a position that requires decisive thinking. I personally don’t think she could make an informed decision. I think her emotions will get in the way especially self-preservation. She would ignoring everyone around her except Count Hyde.”

Sobbash becomes angry. “You’re telling me she’d sacrifice everyone here to save her and Jinto’s skin?” Seelnay nods. “It very possible Admiral. That’s what we need to determine before we head for Sol-Eros. Whether Her Highness is fit to go to the surface of the planet without losing control and possibly getting everyone killed.”

Sobbash stares at Seelnay. “You think she’s become self destructive or could become that way?” Seelnay nods. “Could be Admiral, Do you have any idea how much it hurts me to voice those opinions about she who saved me from a fate worse than death?” Sobbash points at the empty cup. Seelnay fills it with tea and hands it to her. After taking a drink she says. “How do you think we should proceed?” Seelnay leans back. “We can’t treat her with kid gloves we need to directly confront her just as she might be confronted on the surface. We should also be prepared for a very violent response. I’m guessing Samson is briefing Ku?”

Sobbash nods. “He’s seeing if Jinto has told Ku anything that we don’t know. I guess the four of us need to sit down and compare notes before we go over?” Seelnay smiles. “Taking on Her Highness unprepared. Well the Baron of Febdash underestimated her once.” Sobbash nods she rises and thanks Seelnay for the tea. After leaving Seelnay, Sobbash could only think of an angry Lafiel. The thought left her with no comfort.

Lafiel had slept for six hours she awakened to natures call. That accomplished. She kissed Jinto and proceeded to return to sleep. Jinto had sat reading first a novel Ku had given him, and then he’d switched over to the surveys from Sol-Eros. There were some facts that left him feeling uncomfortable about visiting the system. He hoped that Samson and Sobbash could shed some light on his growing apprehension about going there. Looking at Lafiel, Jinto wondered what was going on with her. She seemed at peace when he was around but the two times she had become agitated was when he had left her sleeping. He decides to perform a little experiment to see if his suspicions are correct. Putting the survey away, he set the computer to monitor Lafiel, and went down the corridor to the crew lounge. Linking to the computer with his creunoc he began to watch Lafiel’s sleep.

It was about thirty minutes later that he noticed her peaceful sleep was becoming restless. Her heart rate, breathing and brain wave activity all took a sharp rise. She began speaking her in sleep. The words shocked Jinto. “Why did I chose to leave you there on that miserable island. I did my duty. I save the rest of them and I left you to the wolves.” She grabs the pillow and holds it tightly. “I’m such a fool Jinto. Don’t die, please Jinto don’t die. Until I can find you and tell you.”

Jinto stood outside their quarters monitoring the complete occurrence. What he saw left him confused. Consciously Lafiel had expressed these feelings to him. But something in her subconscious was telling her no, and it’s driving her to insanity. Opening the door he stepped in, within thirty seconds Lafiel’s demeanor had completely changed. She no longer held the pillow and all of her readings were returning to normal. Jinto stood over the bed she had a smile on her face. She was completely at peace.

Jinto bent over and removed her alpha. She had been wearing it since she left the medical center after the mind attacks. The only time she would remove it was to shower or when she was aboard the Basroil to pilot the ship. Upon removal Jinto became alarmed, the area around the sense organ was highly inflamed and swollen. Taking the alpha out of the room he stood outside the door to monitor Lafiel’s reactions.

One hour later Lafiel had not shown any changes. In fact this was the most restful sleep Jinto had seen from her in a long time. It reminded him of the time on Clasbul when she was exhausted and slept like a rock. Leaving the computer monitoring Lafiel. Jinto went searching for Risch he found him in one of the science labs. Handing him Lafiel’s alpha he asked. ”How much do you know about one of these?” Risch took the alpha from Jinto. “A modified type four alpha pretty standard issue, however.” Risch rolled the alpha around in his hands. “This is Lafiel’s isn’t it?”

Jinto nods he then proceeds to explain the last couple of hours. His experiment and its result as surprising as they were. He turns on a monitor and ties into the ships computer. Lafiel is displayed sleeping peacefully in bed. “She been like that since I removed her alpha. Before I did that I couldn’t leave her for more than thirty minutes without her having, for lack of a better term, a nightmare.”

Risch holds the alpha before him. “These custom ones were issued to either monitor or correct a problem, lets see.” Risch enters the data from the alpha’s data plate into the computer. He is greeted with a surprise. “Hey Jinto, look at this.” Jinto leans over the display. It clearly states that all information concerning that alpha was classified and could only be requested from the medical center at the Capital. Jinto picks up the alpha. “So what’s so damn special about this one that only the medical branch at the Capital knows.” He looks at Risch. “I’ll pose a question. What if Lafiel’s alpha was damaged or destroyed how would you replace it?”

Risch stood and walked to a cabinet, opening it he searched through a couple of drawers and produced an alpha that looked identical to Lafiel’s. “I’d take this one, scan Lafiel’s brain, and program it to adapt to her. It’s really pretty simple.” Jinto held the alpha. “How soon could you do it?” Risch leaned over to the console and pressed a couple of buttons. “Since you already have the main computer watching her all I had to do is take a scan.”

Taking the alpha from Jinto he placed in a receptacle the computer then programmed it. Handing Jinto the alpha Risch says. “You’re all set, give this to her. She shouldn’t notice any difference. In the mean time I’ll hook this one up. I can use the computer to convince the alpha that it’s sitting on Lafiel’s forehead. I’ll monitor the results and contact you when I know something.” The display monitoring Lafiel shows she was starting to wake up. Risch looks at Jinto, “You better get a move on put it on her before she wakes.” Jinto leaves the room. Risch watches as Jinto slips in to their quarters and places the alpha on Lafiel’s head. Risch turns off the display and attaches the alpha to the programming device and leaves the programmer set to Lafiel’s sleeping brain pattern.

Jinto is sitting reading. When Lafiel wakes. She sits on the edge of the bed and faces him. “You’ve been here reading all the time? Wow! That had to be boring.” She stretches. “I feel great. I slept like a rock I think the dream started once but it went away. Are you sure you didn’t leave?” Jinto lowers the book. “You want to see the flat spots on my butt?” Lafiel shakes her head. “Okay I believe you maybe I was dreaming, dreaming.” She laughed and said. “I’m hungry you want to get something to eat?” Jinto nods.

They leave their cabin and go down the corridor to the crew lounge. Lafiel finds her favorite machine food and Jinto has a donut and a cup of tea. Lafiel notices what Jinto is eating and comments, “That’s not real nutritional Jinto. You want some of this?” Jinto looks at her. “It’s Okay my insides are a little unsettled. This should calm them down.” He couldn’t tell her the truth that he had eaten about three hours ago while he had left her alone. He did value his life after all. Lafiel accepted his statement and continued to devour her food. Jinto took note of her increased appetite. This was a good sign lately she had been picking at her food and hardly eating.

Lafiel finished dining and started a conversation about Sol-Eros. “Jinto. I’ve been thinking. We should go to Sol-Eros. I hope Sobbash has something meaningful to give us, but even if she doesn’t we do need to go.” Jinto was surprised this was a reversal of Lafiel’s previous attitude concerning going there. He took a look in her eye. There was that spark of curiosity that he hadn’t seen in a long time. He was about to comment when his creunoc lit up. “Sorry to bother you Jinto but you better see this and if Her Highness is with you better bring her along, if not stop and get her.” Risch’s voice had a tone of urgency that Jinto had only heard twice before. Both times they or the ship were in dire straights.

Lafiel raised an eyebrow. “And what is he in a panic about? Why do I have to come with you? Jinto stood up. “Lafiel do you trust me?” She stood up. ”Jinto I trust you. Does this mean I should just follow you?” Exiting the door Jinto responded. “Yes Lafiel, please follow me. All of your questions will be answered very soon.” She followed Jinto to science lab. As they entered the door she noticed an alpha sitting in a programmer, it looked very much like the one she was wearing.

Risch was sitting in front of the main terminal. He didn’t hear them come in then he noticed them. “Good you’re both here. Jinto this alpha.” He looked at Lafiel. “Does she know?” Jinto shook his head. Hearing this Lafiel inquired. “Know what?” Jinto sat Lafiel down and explained the past several hours to her. Lafiel’s mood was not a happy one. “Jinto you know you never tamper with an Abh’s alpha it is a part of there personality. There are severe penalties for doing so. She reached for the original alpha.

Risch pushed her hand away. “Before you touch that device you might want to watch this first.” Risch started a data playback. “This is what you’re old alpha has been doing to you.” Lafiel became annoyed. “Alpha’s are just interfaces they can’t do.” Risch interrupted her, “The one you’re wearing now, fits that description. However this unit has been, watch the download and see for yourself.” Lafiel sat back and watched. Jinto stood behind her watching as well.

While the playback was going on Risch did some explaining. “I set the programmer to have the alpha think you were asleep. There was no activity until about thirty minutes after Jinto left me with the unit, then it started doing this.”

Fuzzy images at first became clearer it was Lafiel standing on board the Basroil looking into the emptiness of space. The view changed. Then an image of Jinto waving good-bye flashed along with a spoken track. Jinto didn’t recognize the voice, but Lafiel did immediately. “That’s not possible it’s Plakia’s voice she was dead before we ever got to Lobnas II.” A myriad of images flowed on to the display at a speed that was almost incomprehensible to the conscious mind.

Lafiel started to shake Jinto grabs her hand. The scene changed to Lafiel’s cabin aboard the Basroil. She was in bed holding a pillow cursing having to leave Jinto on Lobnas II. Then as suddenly as it started it ended. Lafiel looked at Risch. “It’s done why didn’t the dream finish?” Risch pointed to the time index. “You’ll note this was about the same time that you and Jinto entered the lab. He pointed to Jinto’s alpha. “ I’d like to have a look at that unit too. If what I suspect is happening I can almost guarantee your little mental adventures were not of your own making.”

Taking Jinto’s alpha and setting it next to Lafiel’s old one another set of images started. It showed the two of them floating inside the Basroil before it exploded at Aptic. They were embraced and very content although the ship was seconds from exploding. What followed were images of other times they were together facing death and smiling through it. The images abruptly end, not showing any of there current adventures. In fact it was Lafiel who noted. “That history stops about the same time we were released from the Capital.”

Risch stops the display and looks at both of them. “While you were at the Capital you both were subjected to several mind scans am I not correct?” They both nod. “Then it would be safe to assume that this is part of the record that was recorded from your minds?” Lafiel stood. “They are but why would someone want to?” Jinto still holding her hand said “Drive you insane make you incapable of functioning normally.” Those words. Lafiel thought. “No it couldn’t be, and does this mean someone deep inside the Medical branch is a traitor?” She looks at Risch. “Do what you have to do. Find out everything about those alpha’s.”

She rolled her creunoc to her lips. “Noel come to the science lab four immediately.” Turning to Risch again she says. “How long would it take for a communication to reach the Capital from our present position?” Risch looks at her “About thirty hours at this distance.” Lafiel frowned. “Find all the information you can put it in the simplest terms I’ll send it to my brother. He’s the only one I can trust.”

Jinto looks at her in shock. “What about your grandmother or father?” Lafiel, a sour look still on her face said. “Can’t trust them, not right now. They are still part of the establishment. You do understand my reasoning behind this don’t you?” Jinto frowned. Since this started at the Capital it wasn’t wise for the information to go straight there. It might never reach the proper person.

Ekuryua entered the lab at that moment. Lafiel spying her asks. “Is there a relay close to our position that we can use to get a priority message to my brother?” Ekuryua pulls up a star chart. “Yes about a half a light year away it’s a direct link to the Sord that leads to the Capital. A message sent from there should arrive to your brother with in eight hours. If we leave now we can be there in four hours.”

Lafiel looks around. “How long till Sobbash arrives? I’ve lost track of time.” Ekuryua checks her creunoc. “Anytime now. Shall we wait for her to arrive so at least we can tell her where we went and do we tell her why?” Lafiel is getting impatient. “No we leave as soon as possible is the Lashkau still here?” Noel nods. Lafiel smiles. “Good, tell them where we are going and they can tell Sobbash. Now let’s get going Noel. If I’m right we might just still be able to save the Empire.”

Noel stared at Lafiel. “Save the Empire from what?” Risch took a guess at Lafiel’s thinking. “You think that the tampering with the alphas was a deliberate attempt to put you two out of commission so someone could seize power at the Capital?”

Lafiel nods her head. “Why else would someone want to get Jinto and I out of the way? If we were to die during this mission. The repercussions would be felt clear across the Empire. Somebody doesn’t want us making peace at Sol-Eros. Or leaving there alive.”

Noel is still not convinced. “I’d believe its more along the lines of you’ve made an enemy, and this was directed towards you and Jinto personally. More than it being an attempt to overthrow the government.” Lafiel’s face flushes. “Revenge? Somebody dislikes me enough to take revenge upon me using this method and Jinto as a catalyst?” Lafiel goes into deep thought Noel interrupts it. “So are we leaving or staying?” Lafiel turns toward Risch. “How long till you know exactly what is contained within those alphas?” Risch stares at the alphas. “Might be a few hours. It’s hard to tell there is enough information recorded to be pretty damning.”

Lafiel rethinks her making a mad dash to a relay station with only half facts. “We are staying. Let’s find out all there is to know then we will decide.” She turns to Noel. “You might be right. I’ve made a few enemies along the way. Let’s see what Sobbash brings concerning Sol-Eros. We will wait to see what Risch finds. Then we can logically proceed from there.”

Noel is a little stunned. “Then might I be excused? Sobbash should be here shortly and I’d rather be on the bridge when she arrives.” Lafiel nods and Noel leaves. She then turns to Jinto and Risch. “Find out everything you can about those devices I’ll be in our quarters.” Lafiel leaves. Risch turns to Jinto “I guess you’re going to need a new alpha.”

Going through the cabinet he finds another unit, he then scans Jinto and programs it accordingly. Jinto puts on the alpha and Risch comments. “Is that the Princess you originally met?” Jinto nods. Risch continues to comment. “She’s like trying to contain a chain reaction explosion. Although Noel did do a good job of it. So how does it feel?” Jinto smiles. “It feels great having the old Lafiel back.”

Risch shook his head. “I was asking about the alpha. But thanks for sharing the information.” Jinto gets a sheepish look to his face. “The alpha feels fine Risch. Now let’s get to work you heard what Lafiel said?” They start examining the alphas with more detail.

“Admiral we’ve retrieved Commander Ekuryua’s communications beacon.” Sobbash nods. “Exit the Sord. Establish communications with Commander Ekuryua.” The lead frigate exits the Sord. Then the research, and hospital vessels are next. Lastly come the transports along with the last frigate. “Have the ships quartermasters report to you first officer. I want to know of anything that the fleet might need while we are in normal space.”

The communications officer speaks. “We’ve established communications with Commander Ekuryua. Sobbash smiles. “Put her on.” The display come on a more assured and confident Ekuryua appears before Sobbash. “Admiral there has been a change in plans. I’d like you and your staff over here as soon as possible Ekuryua out.” The display darkens Sobbash stands staring into the blankness.

Samson who was sitting to Sobbash’s right says. “What was the meaning of that transmission? Just what is she up to?” Sobbash shakes her head. “Establish communications with that ship.” The communications officer tries several times before finally she says, “Sorry Admiral they are refusing our hails.” Sobbash turns to Samson. “Did it look like she was in any kind of distress to you?” Samson shook his head. “Actually she looked like that stubborn little wing flyer we first met all those years ago.” Sobbash nods. “I’d tend to agree with you but.” She opens up a link from her creunoc. “Security I’d like an armed boarding party to meet me in the docking bay.”

Closing that one she opens one up to Seelnay. “We’re going over there, grab a couple of laser pistols and come along I’m not sure what we’ll find when we get there.” Closing that link she spoke to Samson. “You are coming?” He nods. “Then let’s hit the armory on the way to the Cilique.” Samson stands Sobbash addresses her first officer. “We are going over there. If the communications from us is lost after we dock, you understand what to do next.” The first officer nods.

Samson and Sobbash leave the bridge. “You think that might be a bit excessive ordering this ship to disable Ekuryua’s ship?” Sobbash stares straight ahead. “Four hours ago Ekuryua was in a panic. Now she’s very calm and she has not given us any reason for this sudden change. I have no idea what’s happened over there. But I’m not going over unarmed and without a backup plan.”

They arrive at the armory Sobbash issues them both a laser pistol and holster. From there they proceed to the docking bay. Seelnay and Ku along with the security detail are waiting. Sobbash faces them and gives them a briefing on what occurred on the bridge she sums it up with this statement. “I feel there is nothing wrong aboard that ship. However the silence since the last message from them brings me to going over armed and ready to take back the ship if necessary. Set weapons to heavy stun let’s get going.” They load into the Cilique and depart. It takes about six minutes to arrive at Ekuryua’s ship. They find the docking bay lit and open. Sobbash lands the Cilique with in the docking bay.

The doors close and the bay pressurizes. Sobbash opens a link to her ship. “We’ve landed no signs of aggression. We are going to disembark and go aboard.” Sobbash motions to the team. They open the cilique door and make their way across the bay to the ships airlock. The airlock door opens readily and Sobbash with a fully armed security force greets a very startled Commander Ekuryua. “Sobbash if knew you wanted a command this bad. I’d gladly given you the ship a long time ago.” Sobbash brings her creunoc to her lips. “We are aboard everything appears normal. I’ll leave this link open for now.”

Ekuryua looks at her. “Normal? Sure everything is normal. What did you expect to find when you got here?” Sobbash looks her in the face. “Given your last transmission compared to the ones before. Your refusals to reestablish contact, your passengers and the general situation. Coming over armed to the teeth and prepared to take back this ship made wonderful sense. Leaving my first officer over there ready to knock your computers off line and slice your propulsion unit to shreds was also a given.” Ekuryua was a little pale. “I guess I was too brief. I didn’t want the Lashkau overhearing too much.”

Sobbash returns her creunoc to her lips. “You heard it. Secure from general quarters and stand down from seizing this vessel.” Sobbash sends security back to the Cilique. Then she directly addresses Ekuryua. “Start explaining Commander and this better be good.” Ekuryua motions them to sit in the transfer area. She explains the last four hours to them. Samson and Sobbash attentively listen to the part about the altered alphas. When Ekuryua finishes Sobbash asks. “Is she back to her old self? Ekuryua rolls her head from side to side. “More or less. She has moments when she wavers for a second. At least she is listening to others again. It’s kind of refreshing.”

Sobbash sighs. “That’s good because the reason we’ve come out here will be a lot easier to explain if we only have to do it once.” Ekuryua smiles. “Guess I’d better show you to a conference room and go get the rest of them.” They leave the airlock area and Ekuryua shows then to a conference room. “Sit tight I’ll be right back.”

It was five minutes to be exact, when Ekuryua, Risch, Lafiel and Jinto entered the room. The first thing Lafiel notices was everyone wearing side arms. Lafiel looks at Sobbash. “You mind explaining yourself Admiral. Wearing side arms aboard a friendly vessel is usually not required.” Ekuryua stepped in and explained the side arms. The armed security detail in the docking bay and everything that had happened in the past half-hours time. Lafiel was not amused. Sobbash stood up. “We can go through that later. Let’s get into the reasons why we are here.” Samson hands out some reports and Sobbash inserts a data crystal in the console on the table.

Being awaken from a sound sleep, Erin heads for the Scholars office. Upon entering she is greeted with a surprise. Li and the rest of the High Council are gathered there. “The ships have exited the Sord priestess, given the number and type I summoned the council too. It is time for decisions.” The Scholar stared in her book she motioned to Erin to come closer. “You see there are two more warship like the first and two large ships I believe those to be transports the other two ship I know nothing about. But large transports I recognize, they are going to invade us.”

The room filled with commotion at the Scholars words. Erin raised her voice over those around hers. “Quite! Can we have some quiet in this room!” The commotion died down Erin address the Scholar directly. “Since when do you have the right to present evidence to the council without my permission. Might I remind you those ships are twenty hours away for Sol-Eros, they are not aware that we know they are there and that we can track their movements.”

Li stepped forward. “So you were going to keep this information to yourself until when? When our skies darkened with Abh attack ships. When our people were being slaughtered?” Erin’s hand hit Li soundly on her right cheek. “If you ever think that I would allow those things to happen, that I would allow this planet to be invaded. If you continue to think that way. I’ll have you put to death.”

Li stands there, her face a bright red and listens to Erin’s words. “The Abh have shown no hostility towards us, although we did treat their ambassador a little rudely it is no reason to launch a full scale attack against Sol-Eros. I purpose that we wait and watch. If they do approach in their present force and take provocative action. Then let the planetary defense system do what the builders designed it to. Defend us. We are not an offensive race we have no warships. We have Scholar she watches the heavens and reports to me. I as Priestess will decide if the Council needs to know.”

Erin looks at Li. “What were you thinking? Inciting the council like that. We can defend ourselves, but the time is not close for considering that. Do you want my position that badly? If you were I now, given all you know. What would you do different?” Li drops her head. “I’m sorry Priestess I let my emotions get in the way. You are correct letting the Abh play out their hand is all we can do. I’m sorry for causing all of this commotion. Can you find it in your heart to forgive me?” Erin pulls Li into her arms. “Yes I can forgive you. It’s part of being who I am. Try not to let things get so far out of hand again.”

Five hours they spent going over Sobbash’s information. Eight sets of eyes and eight minds poured over all of it. The decision was unanimous. The residents of Sol-Eros need to be moved at once. Sobbash stood before a system chart. “The Sord is at the outer most part of the system. I suggest that the fleet exit the Sord and stay here.” She points to a position just out of the event horizon of the Sord. “We will send the research ship to the mid point of the system. From there it can take readings from Sol-Eros and its sun and verify our results. Once we have solid data we’ll contact the planet and inform them of our findings.”

Jinto was a little uncomfortable. “Before we start don’t you think we should contact Sol-Eros and ask permission to enter their space?” Sobbash shook her head. “They won’t know we are there. They don’t have the technology to scan their surroundings. If they did, they would know the peril that faces them.” Jinto wasn’t satisfied with Sobbash’s answer. But he had no firm data to show her. He just had a hunch, something the Abh gave little credit to.

Ekuryua had her questions next. “Do you really want to bunch us up in one place? Spaced that close one lucky shot and we are all space dust.” Sobbash glared at Ekuryua. “Commander, Sol-Eros shows no offensive or defensive capability according to the surveys.” Ekuryua interrupted. “Surveys have been wrong in the past.” Calling up data on her terminal she continued. “Would you like for me to cite some examples?”

Sobbash saw the data and said. “I see. So you want to disperse the fleet across half the system just in case they have a flare gun or something as ominous.” Ekuryua looks at her. “It would be better to error on the side of caution. Than try to explain how one lucky flare destroyed this fleet.” Sobbash turned back to the chart. “Transports here and here. My frigate here, the other one here, the hospital ship in the shadow of this asteroid belt and position your ship where? Admiral Ekuryua?” Ekuryua took the pointer from Sobbash. “Here, a central point where I can see the research vessel and the back side of Sol-Eros. There are four moons around Sol Eros. Has anyone ever surveyed them? I can’t find any data that confirms that fact.”

Sobbash confirms Ekuryua‘s thinking. “Those moons are big enough to hide defensive weapons on.” Sobbash concedes that Ekuryua might have found something worthy of her hesitation. “Commander you have made several valid points. We will proceed with caution upon entering the Sol-Eros system.” She look to Jinto. “I guess we should talk to them too?” Jinto nods his head. “I think it would be helpful. It’s also common courtesy.” Jinto got an unfavorable look from Ekuryua and Sobbash.

Lafiel jumped into the fray. “You two are being arrogant Abh. Remember what we talked about long ago. Why the war started in the first place?” With memories sufficiently jarred the conference continued. Lafiel finally asked the burning question. “What about the Lashkau? It’s sitting twelve thousand meters off the port beam. Do we just take off and leave Spoor?” From past experience neither Sobbash nor Ekuryua wanted Spoor around.

Finally Ekuryua came up with a suggestion. “Why don’t we leave them in normal space they could deliver the data to the Princess brother and watch this region for.” Her mind went blank Sobbash picked up on the next thought. “Rebels, this was part of there territory at one time.” Jinto shook his head. “You guys are really reaching for an excuse, Spoor is injured the last thing she would need is a trip through plane space even though its a short hop from here to Sol-Eros. They came through normal space to get here. So lets leave them here. We have to come back this way. We can report to her then.” Lafiel spoke. “She will stay if I order her to. I still out rank her.” Jinto put an arm on Lafiel shoulder. “I hope it doesn’t have to come to that Lafiel. Kufadis is a good officer he’ll respect our request he does have Spoor’s best interest at heart.”

Sobbash said. “With that settled, are there any other questions?” There were no more. Sobbash continues. “The quartermaster reports all ships are refueled except this one. Commander Ekuryua you’re next to refuel. Ambassador Lynn you will contact the Lashkau and explain to Kufadis what our plans are. Lets plan on leaving in five hours that should get us to Sol Eros during their mid day cycle.” Ekuryua gives Sobbash a strange look. “Well Commander we don’t want to drop in while they are sleeping now do we?” Ekuryua nods. “Good I’m returning to my ship be ready to depart in four hours fifty minutes from now.”

Samson and Sobbash get up to leave. Ku and Seelnay are still seated. “You two are staying here? How about the shuttle aboard?” Seelnay stops Sobbash. “We are staying. I’ll go back with you to get the shuttle it’s the only craft that can do a planet landing.” Jinto taps her on the shoulder. “Not true Seelnay there is another shuttle aboard this ship and both transports can accomplish surface landings.” Seelnay looks at Sobbash. “Guess we are staying here. But I’d still like my own shuttle is that Okay?” Jinto smiles. “Go get your shuttle Seelnay you got a little over four hours to get here with it.” Seelnay leaves with Sobbash and Samson. Jinto looks at Ku. “Sorry to take you away like this I’m sure the two of you were getting acquainted.” Ku slaps Jinto on the back. “Maybe congratulations should be in order. You know Seelnay and I got married before we left the fuel depot?” Ku produces a ring, which he slips on his left hand. “Seelnay’s got the mate to it.”

Calling us out here was a good thing I think. The honeymoon was getting pretty boring.” Ku nudges Jinto in the ribs and points at Lafiel. “So how are you two doing?” Jinto smiles. “We’ve had our moments.” Risch interrupts. “Jinto you and I have a little project to finish or you’re going to suffer from another one of those little moments.” Jinto agrees he calls Lafiel over and says. “Honey, Risch and I have that little project to finish. Can you keep Ku Company till Seelnay gets back?” Lafiel nods, she sits along side Ku. As Jinto and Risch leave they hear Lafiel exclaim. “You two are married! Oh you have to tell me everything!”

Almost to the gangway Ekuryua stops them. “Jinto you are going to talk with Spoor? It’s imperative that the Lashkau does not follow us on this mission have I made myself clear?” Jinto nods. “I’ll call over from the Science Lab. I promise.” Ekuryua smiles. “You better because I’m monitoring all communications that leave this ship, you understand me Jinto?” Jinto nods. Ekuryua turns and walks away. Jinto looks at Risch. “How do you put up with her?” Risch turns the table. “How do you tolerate Lafiel?” They both smile and head to the lab.

Entering the lab they are greeted with the smell of dead electronics. Both alphas show signs of over heating Lafiel’s no longer functions and Jinto’s is the same. Examining them Risch comments. “I wonder what happened? Lets see if there is any recorded data in the computer. The data playback abruptly ends about twenty minutes before they entered the lab. “Don’t know what happen Jinto. Since they are dead. We better take them apart and have a look inside.”

Sitting Lafiel’s alpha on the worktable. Risch proceeds to open the unit there is a bright flash and the component section vaporizes. “Darn they’re booby trapped. Some body doesn’t want their secret to be known.” Risch takes Jinto’s and places it under a scanner. “Jinto look at this. It’s a small explosive charge.” He takes a second scan. “Oh this is interesting! It’s a thermal charge. The moment it’s sees oxygen, poof. Guess we will have to open it in a vacuum.” Risch places Jinto’s alpha in a vacuum chambers removing the atmosphere from it. He opens the alpha. There is a bright flash and the contents of that alpha vanish. “A double trap who ever built these did want anybody poking around inside them. Did the recorder get both of them deactivating?” Jinto stares at the monitor. “Yeah everything is there mine and Lafiel’s alphas both exploding.”

Jinto had a though hit him. “Risch, was it possible for those alphas to self destruct while we were wearing them?” Risch looks at the data from the scans and says; “Yes, the least amount of damage to either unit. It would not have mattered whether you were in atmosphere or vacuum they would have self destructed.” Jinto nods. “So who ever put these device on us never planned on us living to a natural death.” Risch agreed. “In fact Jinto there may have been the option to set these off remotely. However I’ll never be able to prove it now.” Jinto picks up the remnants of Lafiel’s alpha and squeezes it tightly in his hand.

“Risch go over the rest of the data carefully, I’m going to call Kufadis, and then you, I, Ekuryua and Lafiel need to have a long talk. Somebody wants us out of the way and they went to extra ordinary means to try to accomplish it. This means when they find out that we know, they’ll stop at nothing to see everyone involved is dead.” Jinto had just said what Risch had been thinking. “I’ll go over everything twice and look for anything strange now we know what we are up against. How much of this are you going to tell Kufadis?” Jinto shook his head. “Nothing Risch, right now I’m not sure who to trust and who not to, you and Noel are like family. I hope my judgment is sound in this matter.” Jinto walks away. Risch understands Jinto’s last statement. As he goes through the data, he also evaluates whether Noel should know any more than she already does.

“Hey Kufadis. How’s the Admiral doing?” Sitting in the center seat aboard the Lashkau. Kufadis answers, “She’s awake for short periods of time. The doctors say it’s the best thing for her at this moment. I’m guessing you’re heading for Sol-Eros soon. I don’t think we’ll join you. Even though she wished to do so. She’s not up for travel through plane space.” Jinto nods. “I’ll let you know before we leave and there might be something you can do for us it will depend on a tying up a few loose ends first.” Kufadis smiles. “Please let me know. I’ll do anything to help. Lashkau out.” With the communication ended Jinto still felt very uneasy about whether the Lashkau would stay put or drop in unannounced.

Returning to the lab Jinto finds Risch pouring over the data. Hearing him enter Risch’s pauses and says. “I’ve given a lot of thought to what you said about who to trust and who not to. Maybe we should leave the Captain out of the loop on this time. She’s got Sol-Eros to contend with. After the mission maybe we should tell her.” Jinto was a little amazed. “You think that’s wise? Cause if Lafiel knows. You know she’s going to want to discuss it with Noel. I don’t know unless you’re implying that I tell Lafiel nothing else.” Risch looks at Jinto. “I guess that wouldn’t be a real good idea you keeping something from Lafiel that concerns her directly.” Risch ponders his decision and then

“Never mind it was a bad idea. Let's call them both down here, I did find a couple of things while you were gone.” He shows Jinto a spectrum analysis of the material that triggered the explosions. “Pretty rare and exotic stuff they used. Leaves a trail back to.” Risch displayed the data. Jinto focuses on the source. “You sure that’s the only place in the Empire where you can get that from?” Risch nods. “That’s the source doesn’t tell us who put it in the alphas or who reprogrammed them just where the material came from.”

Jinto agrees and says. “Lafiel’s going to go ballistic seeing the source is the ïrich Kingdom, Ablïarsec territory.” Risch ponders that statement. “You know of any hard feelings with in that family towards Lafiel?” Jinto shrugs his shoulders. “Don’t know. She won’t tell me when it comes to her clan. They are very tight lipped to outsiders concerning anything family related. Heck for all I know. There could be a feud among them. But Lafiel wouldn’t say a thing about it to me. She’d just stew over it.”

True to Jinto’s words. Lafiel took in the evidence and said. “It stays aboard this ship and I’ll deal with it after the mission is over. I’d like you to continue sorting through the data. I would like a very clear picture before I.” Lafiel abruptly leaves the room Ekuryua follows her. “Wait Princess you need to tell me what’s going on?” Lafiel stops and faces Ekuryua. “It’s none of your business Ekuryua, just leave it at that will you?” Ekuryua does not like that answer. “That answer is no good Your Highness. You need to explain your actions or I’ll have to find that your personal problems are going to interfere with my mission and relieve you of going planet side.”

Lafiel who was about three meters ahead of Ekuryua turns and moves back towards her. “What gives you the right to address me in that tone of voice and like that? I ought to tear you apart here and now Commander.” Ekuryua stands her ground. “Do as you wish. But you need to convince me that the information you just gleaned in there is not going to cloud your judgment. Or you’re not leaving this ship Admiral Ablïarsec.”

Lafiel steps back. Her anger subsides. She realizes she was about to do great bodily harm to her friend and fellow officer. “Not here, somewhere private and if you breathe one word of this to anyone. I’ll carry out my threat Commander.” They find an empty crew quarters and converse in there. After the discussion Ekuryua said. “I’ll respect your trust in me and not repeat a word of this. You keep that famous Ablïarsec temper of yours in check. Just remember you’ll be down there and I’ll be up here unable to bail you out of anything you get into.” They turn and head their separate ways.

"Ah! You don't know my name?
Its very simple, Lafiel you shall say.
In return I'd like to call you Jinto."

“Kufadis what did Count Hyde say?” Spoor was lying in bed her eyes closed. “That they were planning on leaving for Sol-Eros and he would contact me before they left.” Spoor smiles. “So he doesn’t know we are going to follow him. Very good Kufadis very good indeed.” Kufadis walks over to the bed he takes Spoors hand and says. “We are NOT following them Painiach. You’re not well enough to travel through plane space.” Kufadis feel his hand being grasped more firmly Spoor opens her eyes. “Kufadis I order you to.” He stops her “Order all you want. We are not going anywhere near that Sord with you aboard this ship. There’s been one loss around here I’ll not be responsible for another.” His tears hit her forearm. She turns her gaze towards him. “You feel responsible for the loss of the baby?” He refuses to answer her. He stands there holding her hand refusing to let go of it.

*********
“Captain, the Lashkau has acknowledged our transmission their first officer sends his best.” Ekuryua takes note of the report; she turns to the tactical officer. “I want a warning beacon just inside the Sord, place it so the Lashkau will trigger it before they see and destroy it. The tactical offer nods. Ekuryua’s ship is the last to enter the Sord. Clear of the event horizon she leaves her little messenger. They will be at Sol-Eros in twenty hours time. Now all they can do is wait.

*********
“Priestess. They are heading this way all but the large warship. It has backed away from the Sord and seems to be waiting.” Erin looks over the Scholars shoulder. “How soon will they be here?” Scholar consults her books; “This is strange at their present speed they’ll arrive about noon tomorrow.” Erin looks at the chart. “They’ll be here in time for lunch not the best time to launch a surprise attack, and they’ll be visible in the noon day sun.” She touches the Scholars shoulder. “Keep a watch full eye I still believe they are not here to attack us. But you did raise enough doubts in my mind to be overly cautious.”

Erin leaves the Scholar she finds Li in the hall leading to the front of the building. “Let the High Council know the Abh are on the move, they should arrive around noon tomorrow. The big warship stayed outside the Sord, tell them that too.” Li looks a little confused. “They are showing up in the daytime. They either have a very stupid Commander or.” Erin finishes it. “They have a wise one on a mission of peace.”

Li heads for the council chamber. Erin pulls her smock over her head and heads for her quarters. It was the tenth blistering day this month, she hopes the Abh have an answer to what was happening on Sol-Eros. It was beyond her science to comprehend what was happening. She passes a clump of flowers; the new strange ones that grow without water, in fact water kills them. It was something else her science hasn’t figured out, as of yet. She hoped giving one of them to the Abh ambassador would stir the Abh’s curiosity in Sol-Eros.

Maybe that’s why there were coming in mass, to save them, instead of invading them. Entering her quarters Erin removed her smock dressed for bed and laid down. The heat from the short walk had taken its toll. It was late in the evening when she awoke. Dressing for evening she stopped by the Scholars, there was no change in the movement of the Abh it still looked as if they would arrive around noon. Standing in the street she gazed sky ward, the strange glow kept her from seeing the night sky. She wondered where this had come from and did it have anything to do with the overly oppressive days. Returning to her quarters she made herself dinner and the fell into a deep sleep.

She had left Ku asleep and headed for the docking bay. Boarding the shuttle. She powered it up and ran several system checks it was in the middle of one, the alarm rang. There was a small fuel leak in the aft storage tank. A minor discomfort, she grabbed a couple of line spanners, a control valve lever and ventured into the aft compartment. She noticed that the cause was improper tightening of the transfer control valve. The feed line had a hairline fracture in it at the junction. Purging the system back into its self. She shut off the feed line and removed the valve along with the affected lines and fittings.

Walking forward and leaving the shuttle. She made her way to the engineering department. Risch was in the crew lounge he saw her walk by valve in hand and said. “Hey Seelnay. Is there something you need?” She held the valve assembly up to him. “You got one of these, or can we fix this one?” Risch took the valve. “These we got plenty of, but.” He took a good look at the valve. “Somebody really muscled this one to get it to crack there, that’s one of the strong points.”

She handed him the line and the rest of the fittings. Risch looks at them. “Whoa they got some muscle bound idiot working at that spaceport. These fitting and lines don’t like. Where was this located?” Seelnay told him. Risch became more confused. “Aft fuel tanks? Those things don’t require maintenance that often. In fact there pretty durable assemblies. I wonder.” He heads to storage room picks up the items that they will need and grabs a bright orange box. Opening it he says to Seelnay. “Have you seen one of these before and do you know how to use it?” She nods. Risch continues. “Lets do a complete scan when we get to the shuttle. If they managed to do damage like that who knows what else is hiding.”

Seelnay installed the fuel management pieces while Risch did a complete external scan. Entering the ship he handed Seelnay the scanner. She completed a through internal scan handing the scanner to Risch she said. “The inside looks Okay. How was the outside?” Risch shrugged his shoulders. “I need to examine the scan but nothing seems wrong. Maybe it was a one-time incident, a fluke. Its really strange you didn’t have problems sooner.” Seelnay powers down and secures the shuttle; she and Risch leave the bay. Risch returns to engineering and Seelnay returns to a sleeping Ku.

The event horizon of the Sol-Eros Sord loomed ahead. Slipping gently through the Sord the Abh fleet deployed as planned. “Admiral, all ships are in position shall we send the research vessel in?” Sobbash shakes her head. “We haven’t heard from Ambassador Lynn until they make contact we will wait.” In the distance, Sobbash can see the outline of Ekuryua’s ship. It’s traveled to a point midway between the Sord and Sol-Eros. The suns light bathes Ekuryua’s ship giving it a stranger glow. For now Sobbash relaxes and awaits the message from Jinto.

*********
“We are within communications range Captain.” Ekuryua turns to Jinto. “Voice or video, have you decided?” Jinto nods. “Video. If all they can do is hear me then that’s fine. But if they can see me, then they shall see me.” Lafiel nudges him and Jinto winces. “I guess I should have said us.” He motions to Lafiel to stand along side of him. She joins him and a link is opened. The standard greeting is beamed at Sol-Eros it’s done in several different languages. Now silence greets them.

*********
“Priestess there is a message being broadcasted to us from the lead Abh warship.” Erin motions to the Scholar she opens the link. “It’s visual, they are transmitting video.” Erin smiles. “Lets see who wishes to speak with us.” The Scholar transfers the message to the main display. Jinto and Lafiel appear before them. They are dressed semi formal. The message begins; “Greetings people of Sol-Eros I am Jinto Lynn. Ambassador of the Humankind Empire Abh, This is Her Highness the Princess Ablïarsec. We come in peace and await your response.”

Erin looks at the image of Lafiel. Her stunning beauty takes her. “So that’s an Abh female.” She turns to Li. “Looks like you win the bet.” Li smiles and steps towards Scholar. Erin has Scholar replay the message several times. “There seems to be no signs of hostility in the message or the messengers. You think we should talk to them or let them wait a while longer?”

Li and Scholar confer, and after a semi-heated debate they address Erin. “See what they are after, but dispense no vital information.” Erin nods and Scholar sets up a video feed from with in the council chamber. Li stands beside Erin the feed starts. “I am Erin, High Priestess of Sol-Eros she is Li, the one who assists me. You have taken a lot of time to get back with us. I think an explanation would be in order.” Scholar leaves the link live but ceases all video and audio from the chamber.

*********
Aboard the frigate the communications officer announces. “In coming message audio and video, two second delay.” Jinto and Lafiel see Erin’s message and also notice the live link is left open and the absence of further signal.” Jinto has the message replayed as he does Lafiel steps closer to the display. Three viewings later Lafiel comments, “They are a beautiful race. I did detect a little hesitation in the High Priestess message, it was like she wanted to say more.” She turns to Jinto. “How much do you want to tell them?” Jinto thinks for a moment. “Let’s follow the original plan ask for permission to land and for the survey ship to sweep the system. Then see what they say.” Lafiel nods she turns to the communications officer, “Link us in.” The link established Lafiel starts to speak.

“I am the Princess Ablïarsec. The explanation for the time it took us to respond was we needed to have a thoroughly understanding of your system. Which at the moment we still do not have. I ask permission for our research vessel to sweep the system. Once we have those findings, we would like to come planet side and discuss them with you.”

Erin stood amazed. This Princess had just asked permission to sweep the system. Never before did the Abh ask such a thing, they just did it. She began to wonder if the Abh knew more about Sol-Eros than they were admitting to. She looks towards Li and Scholar then to the rest of the council. “This is an interesting turn of events. Scholar if they scan the system will they find our defenses?” Scholar replies. “They have not done so in the past I feel we are safe to let them scan all they wish.” Erin turns to Li, “Well assistant and rival what do you think?”

Li looks towards her father Kim. He along with the rest of the High Council have stood in the chamber and watched this transmission with great interest. Kim speaks. “This one is sincere. She is so unlike the demanding one before her. The council wishes to hear their findings. We agree to allow the scan and subsequence landing.” He turns to Scholar. “Wise one, the defenses are active?” Scholar nods. Kim continues. “Let them scan but the first hostile move we defend our selves without any warning.”

Li nods and turns to Erin. “You’ve heard the councils wishes. As for my thoughts. I agree only to the point of defending ourselves.” She points to the display. “We can not destroy all of those ships with the defense system. It is a defense system after all. I’m of a mind to allow the scan so long as the vessel never gets any closer than here.” She point to a place about five hundred thousand meters from Sol-Eros. “If they launch a weapon from there we can destroy it and if they cross that line the defense system is lethal at that range. Don’t you agree?” Erin and Kim take in what Li has said then Erin questions Scholar. “Can we set the system to defend at that distance?” Scholar nods.

Erin motions to Scholar to open the feed to the link. “Princess you may scan so long as you do not cross these coordinates.” She points to a system map. “Five hundred thousand kilometers radius from Sol-Eros. Once you have your facts. Then we will discuss your landing here.” She motions to Scholar. The feed quits. The link stays live.

*********
“Princess you may scan so long as you do not cross these coordinates.” She points to a system map. “Five hundred thousand kilometers radius from Sol-Eros. Once you have your facts. Then we will discuss your landing here.” The transmission ends, and Jinto looks at Lafiel. “I guess we scan. But don’t get to close to Sol-Eros.” He motions to Ekuryua who is in contact with the research vessel. Ekuryua gives them the instruction and the order to go ahead. Lafiel is reviewing Erin’s transmission. “She is pretty resolute on not wanting that line crossed. That’s not a problem. I don’t know Jinto something is still a little odd their link is still open. They are just transmitting nothing. I wonder why that is?”

Lafiel takes her Alpha and ties into the ships sensors. For the next few minutes she concentrates on the signal being beamed from Sol-Eros. It’s a fixed signal from the surface. She asks the navigator to change position slightly so they don’t lose the signal. “Jinto we are going to have a problem. They are a fixed signal. As the planet rotates it will go out of range. We need to send a communications buoy so we can keep the link open. If not it will be several hours before we can communicate with them again. I wish we were in orbit.”

Jinto smiles. “That’s a great idea Lafiel.” He turns to Ekuryua. “Can we do a five hundred thousand meter orbit?” Ekuryua scans the system. “It can be done there is an asteroid belt and one moon we would have to dodge. I’m guessing you would want a geo lock above the transmission site?” Jinto looks at her. “Geo lock would be nice. There’s a moon in the path? How far is it from the five hundred thousand kilometers radius?”

Ekuryua brought up a revised system chart pointing at it she said. “Here is our position, and here is Sol-Eros and its four moons. The area we are not to scan encompasses the four moons orbiting Sol-Eros, however the fourth moons orbit is elliptical. It’s apogee exits the radius here continues to this point and then returns below the radius that was specified. It means we either take the larger distance and maneuver around the moon, or we do the geo lock and time our orbit to miss the moon twice, here and here. Given the fourth moons orbital speed if we have to stay more than three days it would become a non issue, I guess we were lucky to show up at the least optimal time.”

Jinto stared at the chart, to keep a geo lock orbit would mean playing tag with a moon whose diameter was just shy of ten thousand meters. Any error in navigation could destroy the ship. The other choice was to position the ship in a quasi lock orbit outside the moons path and gravitational pull and have a momentary signal loss as the moon sped past them. Safety of the ship came first. They would have to make do with any loss of signal. Launching any unmanned object seemed out of the question.

“Ekuryua we‘ll do it this way.” He points to the longer orbit. Ekuryua pouts. Jinto comments. “You really want to play tag with a moon?” She nods her head. “Yes I would, its been pretty boring so far, a little challenge I’d like that. But you’re correct Jinto one seconds hesitation or a momentary lapse and this ship could be damaged or destroyed.”

Ekuryua instructs the navigator to adjust their position accordingly. “Now we wait for the survey ships results, I’ll bring Admiral Sobbash up to date.” Ekuryua turns and leaves Jinto and Lafiel approaches him from behind, “She was planning on the lower orbit and playing tag with the moon wasn’t she?” Jinto nods. Lafiel continues. “She’s going to slip up one day and I hope we aren’t aboard when it happens.” Jinto has heard Lafiel but other thoughts are taking precedence with in his mind.

*********
“The Abh are curious but not foolhardy. They are adjusting their orbit to follow our signal but they are staying out of the forth moons path completely.” Erin looks at Scholars chart. “I see so there will be times when they can’t receive our transmission.” Scholar nods. “Their research vessel seems to be interested in our sun more than this planet, look here.” Scholar point to the path the research vessel took. “They scanned the side of the planet facing the sun and then headed directly for corona edge, they are sitting here.” She points to a position around one million meters from the sun. “I don’t understand what they are after? It’s this planet that’s having problems, the sun itself seems fine.” Erin follows the track of the research vessel they make a pass through the outer radiation belts then return to their original starting point. She muses, “This is odd Scholar. I guess we will have to wait for their results, this is very odd indeed.”

*********
“Jinto the data from the research ship is ready. I’ll link us with Sobbash’s ship then we can compare notes.” Ekuryua brings the main display on line Sobbash and Samson appear. Then Jinto starts the conference. “We are comparing the data now but it looks like you are right Sobbash. Their sun is becoming unstable it’s heading towards what we call a red giant.” Sobbash confers with Samson and says. “We agree with you Count Hyde after checking the last several surveys. The sun is slowly increasing in size and brightness. The spectral and radiation output have increased five fold in the last ten years. They are slowly being.” Sobbash looks to Samson he whispers in her ear she nods and continues. “Roasted alive. We need to get them off the planet as soon as possible. It won’t be too long before the Sun will become sufficiently large enough to engulf their current orbit.”

Sobbash grows silent and Jinto interjects. “Actually the gravitational pull of the Sun will have weakened by then due to its loss of mass, and all planets but the inner most one will escape to a wider orbit. That said. Sol-Eros’s biosphere would be destroyed, as the Sun gets brighter while its hydrogen supply becomes depleted. The extra solar energy will cause the oceans to evaporate to space, causing Sol-Eros's atmosphere to become temporarily similar to that of the cloud shrouded third planet, before the entire atmosphere is also lost. We figure that’s another two hundred years off. This explains the loss in population. The sudden change in the plant life. That has to be a pretty harsh planet to be living on.”

Sobbash and Samson nod in agreement. “How do you plan on conveying his information to the residents of Sol-Eros?” Sobbash asked. Jinto mused. “It would be nice if they were seeing this communication now. Well Lafiel and I will have to work on that aspect. If you have any suggestion please let us know. We’ll contact you before we contact the planet. If there is nothing else I’ll end the link now.” Sobbash nods in agreement the main viewer goes blank.

Jinto turns towards Lafiel and Ekuryua. “You think they were listening to us? We did broadcast on the same frequency, and their link was active. I guess we wait for a little bit then give them a call.” Lafiel puts her arms around Jinto. “It’s not like we’ve haven’t moved a planets residents before.” Jinto stops her. “They wanted to leave. The residents of that planet below us may not want to leave. For their own good we might have to forcibly remove them. Which is our last resort and I’m not really sure how to go about it without getting anyone hurt. Let’s wait and hope they were listening down there.”

*********

The noise level within the council chamber made Erin’s headache and her ears sting. Walking towards the planetary gong. She primes it by lightly tapping it and then she strikes it sharply. The planetary gong resounds through the chamber. It’s low bass boom silencing all around her. Erin returns to the center of the council chamber raising her arms she speaks over the dissipating sound of the gong. “Now that I have your attention. Let us discuss this calmly.” The chamber comes to order. Erin addresses Scholar. “Is what we heard possible? Is the sun slowly destroying this planet?” Scholar consults her books. After several minutes she rises from them and says. “It is possible Priestess. But I would like to see their data before I comment any further.” She quietly says to her self. “I never considered that there would be a repeat of what drove us to this planet in the first place.” Erin motions to Scholar. “Open the link its time we invite our guest to the surface.” Scholar established contact with the ship in high orbit.

*********
“Captain to the bridge.” Ekuryua was in her quarters. “What is it?” “The planet is requesting communications.” Ekuryua replies. “On my way. Where are the Ambassadors?” Jinto’s voice is heard in the background. “On our way. We’ll meet you on the bridge.” Pulling her tunic on Ekuryua leaves her cabin and arrives at the bridge just as Jinto and Lafiel do. Standing in front of the display Lafiel says. “Establish the link.” The display flickers Erin is in the center and most of the council can be seen in the background. “Princess we have heard your conversation. We’d like you to bring your data to us and we can discuss it when you arrive. I’ll have landing coordinates transmitted to you. We await your arrival.”

The display darkens. Jinto shakes his head Lafiel questions him. “What’s wrong Jinto isn’t that what you planned?” Jinto stares at the blank display. “That was too easy, they didn’t even argue. They gave in and accepted that what we said was the truth without questioning it.” Jinto sits in the chair to his right. He places his hands behind his head fingers laced and thumbs place on his neck touching his spine. He leans back and lets the backs of his hands touch the top of the chair. He sits there deep in thought.

Eyes closed he says to Lafiel. “What’s your impression of this message? Your gut feeling?” Lafiel stands along side him. She places one hand in his hair and rubs it gently. “You think it’s a trap don’t you Jinto.” Not moving Jinto responds. “It really doesn’t feel like it, but I’m not really comfortable going down there. I guess we don’t have a choice we were invited. Well, we are going to have to trust them sometime.” He leans forward, Lafiel removes her hand and Jinto unlaces his fingers. He stands and faces her, and says. “Now is as good of a time as any to start trusting them.”

Placing his creunoc to his lips he says. “Seelnay, it’s time to go. Meet you at the shuttle.” She acknowledges his transmission Jinto turns to Ekuryua. “Tell Sobbash what we are up to and wish us luck.” Ekuryua nods. “Be careful, remember I can’t do much from up here when you’re down there.” Jinto and Lafiel leave the bridge. Ekuryua turns to the weapons officer. “Once they are clear of the ship bring everything to standby. I want to be able to respond with in a matter of seconds.” The weapons officer nods. She starts bringing systems to standby.

Opening the door that led to the shuttle. Jinto and Lafiel are greeted by Seelnay and Ku. “Ku you’re not going.” Jinto was emphatic. Seelnay stood there. “He goes where I go, or I don’t go.” Lafiel taps Jinto on the shoulder and says; “Guess she told you, shall we be going?” A very disgruntled Jinto follows Lafiel, Seelnay and Ku aboard the shuttle. Lafiel and Seelnay head for the flight deck Jinto and Ku strap in the passenger compartment the silence continues.

On the flight deck Lafiel and Seelnay strap in, while running system checks Lafiel asks Seelnay. ”You really think it’s a good idea to bring Ku along?” Watching the display Seelnay replies. “If he’s here I know what he’s doing. We’ve discussed all the dangers and he’s agreed to take the risk. I’ve even gone as far as giving him small arms practice. His aim is much better than the Count’s is.” Hearing that Lafiel looks around and Seelnay says. “Behind you, in the locker, four laser pistols and thirty-six power packs. There’s enough there to start a small war if you wish Your Highness.” Lafiel relaxed in the rush to leave she had forgotten to get arms from their quarters. System checks complete. Seelnay contacts the bridge. “Bridge, shuttle ready for departure.” Ekuryua responds. “I’m opening main door, Seelnay leave this link open. You’re cleared for departure. Good luck.” The door cleared. Seelnay heads for the surface of Sol-Eros.

Ekuryua turns to the weapons officer. “Track them. First sign of anything hostile protect the shuttle.” The weapons officer nods and returns to her display. Below, Risch sits in engineering. He’s viewing the results of the scan from Seelnay’s shuttle. The ship itself is structurally sound. However there seems to be a slight anomaly in the propulsion unit. Risch decided to run through the data again. This time with more frightening results upon further investigation Risch noticed a set of sensors were bypassed in the main drive unit.

Opening a comm. link he calls the bridge. Ekuryua answers. “What is it engineer?” “Where’s Seelnay’s shuttle?” Ekuryua explains they are just clearing the first moon. “Call them back and tell Seelnay not to engage the main drive.” On the bridge the main display flashes. There is a small explosion aboard the shuttle. Seelnay could be heard in the background, “We’ve had an explosion the main drive is off line and the containment field for the reactor is failing.” Risch shouts from engineering. “Captain have her eject the core now! No time to explain.” Ekuryua relays the message to Seelnay. Moments later the core ejects. The gravity of Sol-Eros has the shuttle in its grip. The distance becomes enough that Ekuryua orders the core destroyed before it can land on the first moon.

“Seelnay report your status.” There is static then, “We are alright there is a breech in the aft of the ship and its been sealed off. The trajectory is good enough to go ahead and land on Sol-Eros, since we don’t have the power to get back to you anyway. I can still make the landing spot or pretty close to it. Got any idea what happened?” Ekuryua links Risch and Seelnay together they have a brief conversation.

Finally Seelnay says. “I don’t understand. If all of this was wrong before we left Ku’s. Then why didn’t things fail on the flight here why did they wait till now?” Risch said he was still looking into it. “Look Seelnay, we couldn’t get to you so you’re committed to land. The rest of the ship should be sound just be careful.” There was no answer the shuttle had entered the upper atmosphere of Sol-Eros communications were now blocked. Out of position and unable to get around the forth moon in time. They watch the shuttle make a no power landing on Sol-Eros.

*********
“Scholar what is happening? What was that bright light in the sky?” Erin stood looking to the evening sky, and then she caught sight of the shuttle entering the atmosphere. Scholar consulted her books and spoke. “They are in trouble Priestess that explosion was the ships power core being detonated by the warship after it was ejected. They are making a controlled crash. It seems they will get close to the landing zone. Erin turned to her. “Can we talk to them?” Scholar shakes her head. “Not till their ready to land the interference is too great.” Erin nods. “Can we talk to the warship?” Scholar sighs. “No child. They’ve disappeared behind the fourth moon. That shuttle is on it’s own.” Erin returns her gaze to the sky. “So we wait and hope.”

*********
Seelnay had used the ships thrusters to depart the ship to conserve energy. She positioned the shuttle between the third and first moon using gravitational acceleration to propel them to the planet, upon clearing the attraction of the first moon she used the main propulsion unit to align them for entry to Sol-Eros. That’s when it happened, there was a small explosion and the reactor started acting up. Ekuryua’s instance on ejecting the core had probably saved their lives. Now on thrusters and with in the gravitational pull of Sol-Eros. All Seelnay could do was hit the entry path exactly. “Princess go back and make sure they’re strapped in good this could end up a very bumpy landing.” Lafiel rose from her seat stopping at the locker she took two pistol sets with her to the cabin.

Jinto and Ku were just a few feet from the explosion. The cabin pressure had dropped suddenly. Traveling in space suits and one thick bulkhead had saved their lives. Jinto had effected repairs to the section and partially pressurized it. Lafiel entered the cabin from the flight deck she floated towards them. “Here take one of these and strap in. Seelnay says it could be a rough landing.” Jinto and Ku take the belts reluctantly Jinto puts his on. Observing this Lafiel says. “I know you’re upset about going in armed but remember it more than a weapon.” Jinto nods and sits down he and Ku sit midway in the cabin separated by the isle in the window seats. Lafiel returns to the flight deck retrieving the last two pistols she puts one on and hands the other one to Seelnay. “Their all set back there. We can make it?” Seelnay nods. “The landing site is just heading for darkness. We should arrive with light to land. If nothing else goes wrong.”

*********
Sitting helpless at the Sord. Watching the events occurring before her sat Admiral Sobbash. The research vessel was too far away and the fourth moon blocked Ekuryua’s ship. The shuttle’s trajectory was good and they should be out of radio black in five minutes. This was going to be the longest five minutes of her life. Samson stood beside her. “Don’t worry there are two experienced flyers aboard that shuttle they’ll make it to the planet Okay.” Sobbash watches the shuttles track. She hopes that Samson was correct that everything would be all right.

*********
Ekuryua had cleared the fourth moon and adjusted her orbit to fall below the set limits. Watching the shuttle leave its trail of ionized particles. She sat waiting for the first words from them. Static came from the display then. “We are going to be short of the landing zone. There is some sort of vortex. It’s pushing us too far east”. More static Ekuryua tried to raise them but to no avail. Watching the track of the shuttle she notices it making several maneuvers trying to return to their glide path. Scanning the planet in direct violation of orders. She spots danger and transmits in the blind to the shuttle.

“The area east of the landing zone is full of trees do not land there.” She repeats the message several times. There is no response. Sitting helpless she watches the shuttle descend into the area east of the landing zone.

The first part of reentry completed Seelnay notices the are being blown off course and she transmits that information. “Your Highness we are going to be short of their landing zone unless I can maneuver out of this vortex that’s carrying us away for them.” It was getting dark and with limited instrumentation they tried to fly out of the vortex. At twelve thousand meters the shuttle started to head back to the landing site. “We are low. If I use thrusters now to push us back up we may not have enough for a soft landing.”

Lafiel looks around she see several flat places to land and says. “Why don’t we land down there?” Seelnay reminds her those sites are several hundred meters from the landing zone. “I don’t know about you but a couple hundred meter hike is not to my liking.” Lafiel nods and Seelnay blasts the thrusters. The shuttle raises but never gets close to the flight path. “We are going to be short about three kilometers I wonder what’s down there?”

As Seelnay goes to look. The comm. becomes active. In the static they hear Ekuryua say, “The area east of the landing zone is full of trees do not land there.” Seelnay shakes her head, limited light, low flight path and a landing area full of trees. They were going to need something the Abh don’t believe in, a miracle. At fifteen hundred meters the miracle appeared. It was a lake big enough to land on surrounded by trees about four kilometers from the original landing zone. “There, we are landing there.” she pointed to the lake.

For one moment Lafiel felt like arguing. Then she realized this was their only option save crashing into the trees. The approach was a little low crossing the lake the shuttle brushed several trees. Once over the water Seelnay raised the nose and fired the thrusters. The ship settled into the water then there was a loud thud and a shudder followed by a jarring blow.

Laying unseen below the surface was a large rock ledge. The shuttle had impacted it just behind the flight deck. The force of the blow had torn it into three pieces the flight deck flung forward and settled in the soft sand of the beach. The cabin had split in two along the aisle. One side lay embedded in the rock ledge. The other partially submerged in the lake. It was twenty minutes before sunset.

*********
Three distinctive noises were heard in the village. The sound of the shuttle breaking the sound barrier on arrival. Then the roar of the thrusters and the subsequent impact into the lake. Kim had gather the able bodied men of the village. Armed with rescue gear they head for the lake. Li and Erin stood at the council chamber watching them leave. “Priestess I don’t think anyone could have survived that landing. Don’t you think we should inform the Abh in orbit?” Erin shakes her head. “Not until we’ve heard from your father, only then will we speak to the Abh.” Li nods and they watch the group disappear over the hill and down towards the lake.

*********
The smell of the lake filled her senses. Opening her eyes all she saw were trees. A quick check of her fingers and toes they seem to respond. Looking towards her right she spied Lafiel. She too was coming around. “Your Highness, are you hurt?” Lafiel a little groggy said. “I seem Okay.” They heard a voice behind them. Unbuckling and standing they tried to leave the flight deck. But the door to the cabin was jammed. Lafiel removed her pistol set it on high and fired. The door yielded to the blast.

Once the smoke and steam cleared a horrific sight greeted them. They were sitting on the beach the rest of the shuttle lay thirty meters behind them one side embedded in the rocky ledge. The other sticking out of the lake. The voice they heard came from the side partially submerged in the lake. Wading through chest deep water they found Jinto strapped to his seat neck deep in water. His left arm wouldn’t function. He couldn’t release him self from the seat. Lafiel reached into the water found the release and she and Seelnay pulled Jinto out of the seat. “Can you walk Jinto?” Lafiel asked. He nods. Then Seelnay asked. “Where’s Ku?” Jinto stared at the other part of the shuttle. “He’s over there.”

Shining her light towards the other half of the shuttle. Seelnay saw Ku still in his seat and motionless. “Ku! KU!” she started to make her way over to where he was. Lafiel was helping Jinto along. He said quietly to her. “I don’t think he made it Lafiel.” Lafiel held Jinto tightly. It was about that time Seelnay reached Ku. She took his hand it was cold and limp she checked for a pulse there was none. Pulling a scanner from her pocket she made one pass over Ku. His neck was broken. He had died instantly. Placing the scanner in her pocket she released Ku from the seat and took his lifeless body in her arms. Gazing at the stars she said. “Why did you have to take him? Why?” Jinto and Lafiel stood silently beside Seelnay.

Retrieving a waterlogged stretcher from the ship. Lafiel and Seelnay placed Ku’s body on it and carried it to the shore. Jinto follows, his shoulder is dislocated and he is in shock. The water temperature of the lake is about ten degrees C. Jinto was in the water for an unknown period of time. But he is starting to suffer from hypothermia. Lafiel and Seelnay place Ku's body on the sand. Seelnay kneels next to Ku and Lafiel tends to Jinto.

“Jinto you’re freezing.” Lafiel wraps her arms around him. “Hang on Jinto helps on.” Lafiel suddenly brings her creunoc to her lips and says. “Can any body hear me?” There is static, silence and finally a scratchy familiar sounding voice. “Lafiel is that you? Can you hear me?” Lafiel feels like a child that was lost and just recently found. “Yes Noel. I can here you. Seelnay and I are uninjured from the crash. Jinto is injured and Ku has died.”

More silence. This time the voices are several. Sobbash, Ekuryua, the research vessel’s captain all try to talk at once. It’s Ekuryua, the closest transmitter that finally wins out. “Hang on down there as soon as it’s daylight we’ll come and get you.” Lafiel interrupted. “It’s no good, without medical attention we’ll lose Jinto by morning. Seelnay’s no real help at this time, she grieving.” Lafiel glances over to Seelnay. She is sitting on the sand Ku’s hand in hers. Her sobbing almost drowns out Ekuryua’s voice.

“We’ll figure something out. Leave this link open I’ll contact you soon.” Try as she might in wet clothes she’s not getting Jinto any warmer. She sits him on the sand picking up several pieces of driftwood. Placing them in a tepee as Jinto had shown her she took her laser pistol and starts a fire. It takes a couple of moments but finally the heat from the laser dries the wood enough to create a warming fire. Jinto sits close to the fire. The steam raises from his uniform. Lafiel calls Seelnay over. She sits motionless, still grieving.

Seelnay’s grief was short lived. From the trees noises, voices and flashes of light were coming their way. Lafiel instinctively reach for her laser pistol. Jinto caught her hand. “I think it’s a rescue party. Just where are we?” She explained they were about four kilometers from the village. Jinto nods. “That figures it’s been enough time for the villagers to form a rescue party and make their way here.”

Placing her creunoc to her lips Lafiel says. “Noel we’ve got company coming. I hope they’re friendly.” Ekuryua’s answer is a little unexpected. “I hope they are too. We can’t do anything till sunrise I made a scan of the area it too tricky to maneuver around there in the dark. I hope they are from the village and they take you there. You should be able to get medical help from them.” Lafiel puts her arm around Jinto. “I’m scared honey. I’m really scared.” Before Jinto can reply. Kim and several villagers step out of the trees and on to the beach. Lafiel stands and says. “I am the Princess Ablïarsec. We need your help.”

A startled Kim motions to the villagers with him. Two shine their lights towards Seelnay. She sits in the sand, tears streaming down her face still holding Ku’s hand. The rest shine their lights about the area, the shuttle is illuminated. Kim takes in this view and says. “Just the four of you. There are no others?” Lafiel nods. “Will you help us?” Again Kim is startled. An Abh is asking for help. The tales said the Abh would never stoop to a lower life form such as his for help. Kim motions to the villagers they place a blanket around Jinto. Two of them move Seelnay away from Ku and two more pick up his body on the stretcher. Kim douses the fire. He helps Jinto to his feet and places his arm around him. Looking at Lafiel, Kim says. “Help the other woman. We need to leave here. Now. The village is not far. We will help you there.” Lafiel move towards Seelnay. She place her arm around her and says. “We need to go. They’re bringing Ku with us.” Seelnay stands and follows behind the two carrying Ku. Lafiel stands beside Jinto who Kim is supporting. Jinto looks at Lafiel. “Have you got the data?” Lafiel nods. “It’s in my breast pocket and on a data crystal around my neck.” Kim starts walking towards the trees Lafiel follows him.

*********
“You heard the conversation Admiral?” Ekuryua sat waiting for Sobbash’s reply. “I did. Guess we will have to trust them. I’m bringing the rest of the fleet in.” Ekuryua cuts in. “Hold you’re position until I’ve had contact with the Government of Sol-Eros. Any movement could be consider hostile and now they have.” Sobbash finishes it, “Hostages. You’re correct Commander until we know what is going on. Storming in there no matter how good our intentions could bring harm to the three of them. Keep trying to communicate with the government. I’ll be monitoring your progress, Sobbash out.” The display dims.

Ekuryua turns her attention to the open links broadcasting from the surface. One is from Lafiel’s creunoc and the other is from the government of Sol-Eros. For the moment only Lafiel’s link is active. It sounds as if they are walking through a forest. Her creunoc starts flashing it’s a text message from Risch. She reads it, erases it, and promptly leaves the bridge saying not a word to anyone. Sliding down the gangway ladder she enters the engineering department. Risch sits looking at a display he speaks. “That was fast. Did anybody see you come here?” Ekuryua stands behind him. “No, now I’d like for you to explain the message you sent me. Risch point to the display. “The shuttle was sabotaged after it was taken aboard Admiral Sobbash’s ship. Have a look at this.” He hands Ekuryua the pieces removed from the shuttle earlier.

“I originally though these were broken by the spaceport at Deltoke. Upon further investigation I found the damage was recent and the sensor that were bypassed, the spaceports master data crystal would have never let that ship leave. Noel, somebody aboard Sobbash’s ship did this damage and they were very calculating in their work. They fractured these fittings so we’d be led to the other end of the shuttle. While the actual damage was done here. He points to the scan of Seelnay’s shuttle. “They bypassed the flow sensors and when Seelnay engaged the main drive she actually triggered a chain reaction within the main reactor. Another five minutes and they all would have died. It was a failure of the mixing valve that caused the explosion. Had that not happened, they would have exploded upon reentry. Flooding Sol-Eros with anti-proton radiation and killing everything on the surface”

Ekuryua stood deep in thought finally she spoke. “Who ever sabotaged the shuttle, were they out to kill those aboard or were they out to destroy Sol-Eros?” Risch looks at her. “I never thought of that angle. I always figured they were after either the Count or the Princess. Unless they wanted to do both.” She nods and then asks. “Risch you’re positive that that damage did not occur on this ship?” Risch nods. “There is no way that could have happened here. The tools required are here under lock and key. I checked the records not only have the tools not been disturbed. Only three people had access to the shuttle Seelnay, the launch officer and myself. From the time it arrived till it left the only one who went aboard was Seelnay. That’s when she found the valve problem. I also checked the tools. They would have been damaged they show no signs of it. I’m pretty sure it didn’t happen here. But then, that means.”

Ekuryua nods. “Sobbash has a problem aboard her ship and before they get any closer to the planet she needs to find the person or persons responsible. Could you imagine if her ship got close enough to open fire upon Sol-Eros?” Risch pales. “How are you going to handle this Noel? You can’t leave orbit. You shouldn’t leave the ship and if you communicate this the whole fleet maybe even Sol-Eros its self will hear it. That would remove the advantage of surprise.”

Ekuryua nods. “You know what you’re looking for. You would be able to find the person or persons responsible. Take a security detail and the Cilique and head for Sobbash ship. I’ll tell her you’ll explain once you get there. Now get going Risch and take a weapon with you.” Stunned. Risch nods. He gathers up the evidence and follows Ekuryua to the armory. Weapon strapped on he meets the detail in the docking bay. Moments later they are headed for Sobbash’s ship.

“Admiral Sobbash, Risch is on his way over to confer with Samson about rescue plans he should be there momentarily.” Sobbash acknowledges the message. Ekuryua goes back to listening to the open link from the surface it still sounds like Lafiel is walking through an uneven landscape. Reviewing the data from when she left the bridge till the present Ekuryua notices that there is a strange rhythmic pulsation in the background almost like a reactor running.” She walks over to the tactical officer. “Do an ambient scan of the surface take note of any power generating devices and let me know. Do your scan discretely we don’t want the surface knowing what we are up to.” The officer nods and Ekuryua returns to the center seat. Checking her creunoc she muses. “Risch and his little party ought to be aboard Sobbash’s ship by now. I figure about five more seconds.”

“Captain, Admiral Sobbash is hailing you. She sounds pretty mad.” Ekuryua faces the display “Watch me. This is going to be a very short conversation I drop my hand you cut the link understand me?” The communications officer nods. Ekuryua continues. “Open the link and be ready.” The screen flashes, a red faced Sobbash pounds on her chair arm. “How dare you board this ship?” Ekuryua stops her. “Risch will explain. Any further conversation on an open channel is not allowed.” She drops her hand the display goes dark.

*********
“Risch will explain. Any further conversation on an open channel is not allowed.” “Admiral the signal is cut off.” Sobbash slams her hand into the chair arm. “That impertinent little. I’m going below. Take command and don’t let any one on this bridge.” The first office nods and says. “It’s not the bridge their after Admiral. They’ve made their way straight to the engineering department.” Sobbash stops before the door to the lift. “Engineering department? Fine that’s where I’ll be.” She leaves the bridge.

The doors open to the engineering deck. Most of the staff is lined up in the passageway. They are being guarded by the security detail. Sobbash makes her way to the main section of the department. There she finds Risch and Samson looking at a locker full of tools. “I’d like an explanation now, Mister Risch.” Risch turns to Sobbash he is holding a wrench and a scanner in his hands. Samson turns too he’s holding the line and the valve from Seelnay’s shuttle. Samson speaks. “Admiral we’ve got a problem. A very big one.” He explains Risch’s sudden unannounced visit. He tells Sobbash they have found the tools and equipment that were used to sabotage Seelnay’s shuttle. Hearing the word sabotage, Sobbash’s eyebrows raise her face grows stern. “Admiral we were about to question those who had access to the tool locker would you like to join us?” Sobbash nods. “You’re sure that the saboteur is aboard?” Risch nods. “It might be more than one Admiral.”

Hearing that news brought more rage to her. She had commandeered these ships and never checked the crews out, mistake number one. Seelnay’s ship was sabotaged aboard a ship she commanded. Mistake number two. There wasn’t going to be a number three. Heading into another room Sobbash finds three crewmembers being closely guarded. Risch walks into the room scanner in hand not saying a word he proceeds to scan the three crewmembers. Stopping in front of a female crewmember he says. “Your DNA appears on this tool and on the threads of this fuel valve. Can you explain this?” The crewmember looks at Risch she smiles. A loud crunch is heard as she collapses to the floor. Risch scans her. “Admiral its poison. It’s too fast acting.” A moment later she is dead. Risch finishes his scan. “Admiral it was a suicide capsule in her upper molar, the poison was injected directly into her brain.”

Sobbash is stunned. She looks at the other two crewmembers. “Who is she? How well did you know her?” The other crewmembers explain that she had recently transferred over, that she kept pretty much to herself and that she was always kind of morbid. “Admiral she always knew she wouldn’t survive this trip. I just figured it was rookie jitters and it would pass. If only I knew.” One crewmember said. Sobbash nods and says. “Take her to the medical section do a through exam and let me have the results as soon as possible.” She turns to the other two. “Until Mister Risch and Samson check you out completely you’re confined to your quarters.” They stand, come to attention and say, “We understand Admiral.” Security takes them away.

Sobbash turns to Risch. “I’m assuming you and Ekuryua have a way to communicate that won’t be received by the planet?” Risch nods. Sobbash continues. ”Tell her what has happened and that the remainder of the fleet will be checked out. Do you need to go back?”

Risch says, “As soon as I finish, there are a couple of loose ends that I’d like answers to before I go. The first is she didn’t look strong enough to do the damage that was done to Seelnay’s shuttle. You never know though, after you’ve checked her background we’ll know more.”

Risch motions Samson to join them. “Admiral. The Captain is under the impression that this might have been a two-fold attack. Not only to kill off the Princess and Count Hyde, but also to completely destroy all life on Sol-Eros. Considering the scene we just witnessed. I’m going along with her. Admiral the only people I’ve ever seen that would openly commit suicide are enemy spies and members of the Royal Guard Counter Intelligence Section.”

Sobbash shakes her head. “That’s not possible Ramaj and Kenesh disbanded them after Dusanyu was arrested.” Risch looks her straight in the eye. “Admiral you know as well as I do there are factions that would re-employ those members in the blink of an eye.” Sobbash takes in Risch’s words. “Your Captain might be too smart for her own good. You might want to inform her of that when you see her next. Mister Risch. Let me know when you depart the ship.” Risch nods. Samson and Sobbash leave the room. Risch continues his investigation.

Lafiel’s creunoc had been transmitting the sounds of footsteps for the past half hour. Now the sounds have stopped and new ones emit from the speaker. Ekuryua sits listening to the feed, waiting and wondering. “I wish she would say something to let us know what’s happening.” Her wishes are soon answered.

“So this is your village? I haven’t seen may land places before.” Jinto’s voice is heard in the background. “Easy with the arm please.” A voice the Ekuryua cannot recognize speaks next. “Priestess one of them has died what should we do with the body?” A moments silence then two voices try to speak together the loudest of them is Seelnay’s. “You’ll do nothing to him. I’m taking him home to be buried beside his father.” The second voice silenced by Seelnay’s outburst speaks. “We will give you a device to preserve his body till you can take it to his home. Although we must act quickly it’s almost sunrise and we need to be in the shelters before the sun rises.” There is a small pause and what is said next becomes of great interest to Ekuryua. “Welcome ambassadors. Although I was hoping for a different set of circumstances to greet you in. I Erin High Priestess of Sol-Eros bid you welcome and make one request.”

Lafiel and Jinto stand wet dirty and tired they respond to Erin. “Thank you for your welcome. We too hope for the circumstances to be different. What is your request?” Erin points at Lafiel’s creunoc. “Your communication device it must be turned off before we enter the council chamber that is our law there are no exceptions.” Lafiel nods. “May I contact my ship before I turn it off?” Scholar who is standing beside Erin speaks. “They are listening to you as you speak I consider that contact enough now turn it off at once.” Scholar had tipped part of her hand. Lafiel turns the creunoc off the link is broken.

Ekuryua slams her hand into the chair arm. “So there technology is more advance than we first figured. Keep passively scanning the planet. Do you have the position of the village?” The tactical officer nods. “It’s locked into the targeting computer just give the word Captain.” Ekuryua swings around in her chair and faces the tactical officer. “You’ve targeted the village and just what were you planning on doing? Destroying the Princess’s party along with the rest of the village?” The tactical officer pales. “Sorry Captain force of habit.”

Ekuryua interrupts him and address the entire bridge crew. “Get this straight. This ship will take no offensive action against Sol-Eros. Even if we are attacked while the Princess’s party is on the surface. Have I made myself clear?” The bridge crew acknowledges her wishes. Ekuryua sits back down. “What’s going on down there I need to know.” Her mind is racing.

Its very simple, Lafiel you shall say.
In return I'd like to call you Jinto."

The dark gray metal container is sitting on the raised area outside the council chamber. Ku’s body is inside it, and the mechanism is running keeping the natural processes in check. Lafiel, Seelnay and Jinto have followed Erin into the High Council chamber. The voices have settled, now Erin speaks. “We have the Ambassadors from the Humankind Empire Abh they wish to address the council. Are there any objections?” There were none. Erin motions to Lafiel to stand. “You are allowed to speak.”

Lafiel stands she is still in a wet uniform and exhausted from her ordeal. She explains the data that they have brought with them. As she goes on voices stir in the chamber. Erin stands and silences them. Lafiel reaches for the data from her tunic top the pages are wet and hard to read. She produces a data crystal from around her neck. Scholar gasps as she sees it. “Hand me that crystal.” Lafiel hands Scholar the crystal, Scholar then removes a similar crystal from around her neck. Comparing the two she queries Lafiel. “Have your people always used this form of data storage?” Lafiel nods. “It was the way our mother world stored data, so after we left we adopted it.”

Scholar returns her crystal to her neck and kept staring at Lafiel’s. “Can I have you arm?” Lafiel extends her arm Scholar takes it she checks it for a pulse and general feeling. She looks at Erin. “She’s flesh and blood, not a machine at all.” Erin stares. “Then she is cold and tired and he is really injured?” Scholar nods. Erin grows pale. “We figured you were machines like our tales of home have taught us. We figured you had adopted human traits to interface with other life forms. We never for one moment thought you were actually human.” The council room grows noisy. Erin quiets them. “Princess we’ve done you a great disservice. Please let me show you to somewhere you can clean up and we will get him medical care.”

Lafiel feels Jinto tug on her tunic she turns towards him he says. “There is no time, present the data. Make them understand their position, and then once that’s done the comforts can be taken. You follow me Lafiel?” Lafiel nods she turns to Erin. “Can you display what’s on that crystal?” Erin looks to Scholar. “Is it possible to do as she wishes display the contents of that crystal?” Scholar examines the crystal she places it in a device on the table the main display flickers then the Sol-Eros system is shown.

Lafiel points to the sun. “This is how you sun appeared when we first surveyed your system three hundred years ago.” The display changes the sun now appears bigger. “This is how it looked fifty years ago. The next is ten years ago and now this one is from the survey we just made.” Lafiel looks at Erin. “Can you superimpose them one upon another using the second planets orbit as the center?” Erin motions to Scholar. The displays becomes one showing the expansion as seen from the second planets orbit.

Lafiel proceeds to explain what has been happening on Sol-Eros the past half century. The council chamber remains quite. Then Lafiel delivers the future of the system and Sol-Eros future. She finishes with this statement. “Given the sun’s present expansion rate. The conditions on Sol-Eros will not support life, as you know it with in another seventy-five years. We strongly suggest we help you relocate to a new and safer world.”

The chamber erupts in commotion. Erin walks to the planetary gong. She primes it and strikes it soundly, it’s sound quiets the chamber and bring curiosity from Scholar. “Do you hear that? The gong has changed its tone. The Abh woman is correct. This is how it was before we had to leave our last home.” Erin looks at Lafiel. “We shall consider your words. Now these people will take you to a place where you can freshen up and have his injuries tended to. You may contact your ship from there. I’m sure being human they are worried. I wouldn’t want any more misunderstandings.” Lafiel helps Jinto to his feet. Seelnay who has remained oddly silent throughout all of this follows Jinto and Lafiel out of the chamber.

Scholar approaches Erin. “I’ve examined the ships at the Sord. The transports are empty. The other ship looks like a life support vessel. We have made a grave error in judgment. The same error that had our people banished one thousand years ago.” Erin smiles. “We still have the chance to make things right. Did you examine the one who died?” Scholar nods. “Yes, he like the other woman is of a class humans that our forefathers evolved from. The other two, however, she is a pure specimen, he is a modified being such as we are. But they all are essentially human.” Erin watches as they disappear. “We need to get the council to accept the offer from the Abh. How much more information we share. I’ll leave up to Kim, Li, you and I to decide.” Erin and Scholar return to the council chamber it is going to be a very long day.

Upon leaving the chamber Lafiel’s eyes started examining their surroundings. She rapidly understood why there would be factions within the Empire that would not be happy to welcome these people in to their society. Jinto stood beside her as they walked he took notice of her through examination. His shoulder and neck kept him from looking at anything above his eye level. He heard Seelnay walking behind he said. “I know you miss him and it’s occupying your mind. But Seelnay we need your assistance if you can put this out of your mind.” Seelnay says. “I wonder what powers this place? What ever it is its very old technology.” Lafiel in her best Martinees replies. “I think I know and if I’m right this will be either a great stabilizing or destructive force to the Empire.”
Jinto hearing Lafiel speak in his native tongue he inquires. “Lafiel you think they don’t understand Martinees? Or your using it hoping they don’t understand it?” Lafiel keeps walking and says. “They know Abh, and actually they should. So I hope we can converse in this language until we are stopped.”

The two people in front of them don’t say a word. The two behind them converse in a language Lafiel recognizes readily. A smile comes across her face. The front two slow in front of an arched entryway. One of them points inside and in Abh says. “Those inside there will care for you. When you are finished we will escort you back to the council chambers.” Lafiel thanks them and starts inside. Jinto and Seelnay follow. There is a conversation from behind that Lafiel takes in. Once through the double doors she starts to chuckle. “Jinto remember when you told me my education was lacking is some aspects?” Jinto nods. Lafiel continues. “Now I finally understand what you meant. These people have a lot to learn about the Abh and we Abh have a lot to learn from them.”

Inside what resembled a clinic, Jinto found him self being attended to by what could be described as physician assistants. There were four of them. Two immediately sat Jinto on an exam table and helped him out of his tunic top. The other two started to undress Lafiel and Seelnay to which Lafiel immediately commented. “I can undress myself. Will you tell me what’s going on around here?” Stunned the four women stop. The one examining Jinto’s shoulder spoke. “I’m sorry I though you were informed by those who brought you here. I run this clinic these are my daughter’s will you please undress so I might examine all of you. Then you may use the bathing facilities. While you bathe, we will clean your clothes and return them to you.”

Lafiel asks one question. “Do you have something for us to wear while you wash our clothes?” The clinic operator motions to a table where three robes sit. “Why yes we do. Did you think we’d let you run around here naked?” She moves Jinto’s shoulder he winces in pain. “It’s dislocated come assist me.” The other two leave Seelnay and Lafiel. They move towards Jinto. “Hold him steady.” She looks at Jinto. “This is going to hurt for just a moment.” Before Jinto could answer there was a great pull on his shoulder and it was back where it belonged.

Cleaning the area around Jinto’s shoulder the clinic owner applied a stretchy silver bandage to it. “You can get this wet and it might itch, but in about three days you’ll need me to look at it again.” Jinto thanked her and asked. “How long have you been doing this?” The woman smiled. “About two hundred cycles now. I use to run the medical facility but one younger does that now.” She looks at Lafiel and Seelnay. “Get undressed both of you. Once I’m done with him you two are next.” Laying Jinto down, the assistants finish undressing him. The owner walks over to a desk; she picks up a long wand with wires leading from it to a computer on the desk. Sorry this is the only working scanner I have, it’s a little primitive but if it finds any other problems I’ll have you sent to the medical facility.”

She holds the device above the exam table, a deep purple light emits from the wand, and she passes it over Jinto from head to toe. Setting the wand aside she walks over to the computer and looks at the display. “Young man you’re very lucky the shoulder was the major extent of your injuries and the scan shows it to be back in place.” She looks towards Lafiel. “You’re next as soon as we get him off the table.” Handing Jinto a robe he proceeds to put it on as the attendants with their backs to him form a shield from Lafiel and Seelnay’s eyes. Jinto rises from the table adjusts his robe and sits next to the computer.

Lafiel steps to the table she lays down undressed. The owner passes the wand over her not once but twice, which prompts a response from Lafiel. “Is there something wrong?” The owner shake her head. “No nothing is wrong. Which is surprising considering the force of your crafts impact, although your body looks like it was designed to withstand a lot of gravitational forces.” This time the assistants face Lafiel as she puts on her robe they are all amazed at her beauty even though she’s dirty and exhausted, her beauty still shines through. The robe on Lafiel sits next to Jinto.

Seelnay is a little hesitant to get on the table although once on it she becomes completely relaxed. The owner makes a scan, looks at the display makes another then says. “You are a very lucky woman. The force of impact would have dislodged the child in many other women.” Seelnay looks her in the face. “What child?” The owner is holding a remote display she hands it to Seelnay. Picking up the wand she passes it over Seelnay’s abdomen “There, that is the child I’m talking about. Seelnay spots a small sack of cells attached to her womb, she stares at the owner. “I’m pregnant? You’re kidding me!” The owner passes the wand over one of her daughters, “She is with child too, see it is almost attached at the same spot as your child.” Seelnay lies back on the table holding the display and smiling. Then the tears start to flow.

Confused the owner turns to Lafiel. “Normally we rejoice, not sob. Is there something I don’t know?” Lafiel informs her that the body in front of the council chamber is that of her mate. The owner walks over to Seelnay. “I’m sorry child. I did not know.” Seelnay smiles. “Show me the baby again.” Holding the remote display Seelnay watches as the owner passes the wand over and fills the display with the growing child. Seelnay stares at the image and says. “You better be male and you better look like your father.”

Once Seelnay is dressed in her robe they are lead to a bathing room. The owner points to one large bath. “I hope you don’t mind. But we normally bathe both genders together. I hope that won’t cause a problem?” Lafiel undaunted says. “It’s not a problem. I’ll bathe him. Then they can help me bathe and she’ll have to make her own decisions.” Seelnay slips off her robe and is in the bath in an instant. “I can wash myself and I’ll wash her.” She point to Lafiel. Lafiel nods. “Then it’s decided you can watch and help him dry off when’s he’s done.” The attendants stare and start to giggle. ”Yes, Your Highness, as you wish.” Lafiel and Jinto slip into the tub the water is a perfect temperature.

Bathing completed they relax in the warm water. Lafiel comments in Martinees. “Reminds me of the personal baths at the Capital. Don’t you think so Jinto?” Jinto nods. “Yeah a lot of things look familiar although a little antique.” Lafiel continues. “If these people are who I think they are, they are my roots, part of my heritage.” Jinto shakes his head. “Like a lost tribe? I don’t understand I though you said they all were dead.” Lafiel reminds Jinto. “Remember some things should not be discussed in public Jinto.” She points to Seelnay who is busy holding her abdomen and smiling like a schoolgirl. Jinto nods. “Sorry Lafiel I did forget.”

Lafiel leans forward. “Seelnay are you ready to leave here and go back to the chamber?” Seelnay answers by exiting the tub grabbing a towel drying off and then putting on her robe. She turns to them. “Yeah I guess I’m ready. I’d really like to get off this planet as soon as possible. You should contact them in orbit they’ve got to be pretty worried by now.” Lafiel shakes her head. “I knew I forgot something.” Raising her creunoc to her lips she calls Ekuryua.

*********
Ekuryua hadn’t moved from her seat since contact was lost with them. The communications officer broke the silence. “Captain we are being hailed it’s Her Highness.” Standing in front of the display Ekuryua says. “On main display.” The communications officer says. “Captain it’s audio only.” Ekuryua sits back down. “Put her on.” the static subsides. “Captain we are still negotiating with the government of Sol-Eros. Jinto’s injuries have been taken care of and we are safe it’s seems that they hold no hostilities towards.” Lafiel’s voice has a familiar resonance to it. Ekuryua asks one question. “Where are you transmitting from?” There is silence finally Lafiel fesses up. “Well if you must know we are in a bath house surrounded by beautiful Sol-Eros attendants.”

Ekuryua shakes her head. “You’re in the tub? Well why not. Are the attendants naked too?” Lafiel’s tone changes sharply. “No Captain, seeing you’ve not been through what we have. You should mind your tongue.” Ekuryua knows she has just about pushed Lafiel as far as she dares. Even though she’s on the planet with no way to return. She still is an imposing threat to Ekuryua’s continued happiness. “Sorry Your Highness I’ll be careful in the future.” “That’s better when we know more we will contact you.” The signal ceases. Ekuryua presses a button on her console. “You heard the conversation.” Sobbash’s voice comes through. “I heard. We wait till she has more to say, at least they seem safe.” The signal ceases. Ekuryua sits staring at Sol-Eros.

*********
Lafiel drops the creunoc from her lips. “Jinto remind me to have a little chat with our Captain when we are finished with this mission.” Jinto nods. “You know she was kidding?” Lafiel glares at Jinto. “This is no time for humor we are stranded on this planet we have one dead, one injured and one pregnant. Looks like I’ll have to do this by myself.” Smack! Jinto’s wet hand hits Lafiel’s wet bottom. “Just what are you thinking Lafiel? I may be injured but not useless and Seelnay is still very useful. Don’t go on the solo act. We are a team remember?” Lafiel rubs her bottom, she can hear Seelnay chuckle in the background. She shoots Seelnay a look; Seelnay sticks her tongue out at her. Turning back to Jinto she says. “Okay Jinto, point made and again painfully. I need to stop letting Ekuryua get under my skin like that. Let’s go hear what the council has decided after we get dressed.”

Robes on. They return to the exam room to find their clothes clean and waiting to be worn. Changing into their clothes and meeting their escort outside they return to the council chamber. As the approach they can hear a grand discussion from with in the chamber. Their escorts stop before the chamber and say. “The High Priestess will come and get you when it’s time. Do not enter the chamber without her permission. The penalty is death.” The escort leaves there is no one at the door Jinto take notice and says. “That law must apply to all not only us. There is no guard and I’m not in the mood to die today.” Lafiel nods. They watch Seelnay walk over to Ku’s body. They stand and follow her over. The dark gray container sits the mechanism attached to it running along. Seelnay places a hand on it. “You were going to be a father and you never knew it. Something you always wanted to be. It’s my stubbornness. That’s why you’re laying here.”

Jinto places his arm around Seelnay. “You can’t blame yourself for this, he came willingly. You know we swapped seats right before re-entry. It should be me lying there instead of him.” This admission not only brought strong emotion to Seelnay. But Lafiel realized that she could be without Jinto. If it wasn’t for fate intervening. She places her arm around him “I never thought for one moment you could have died instead of him, seeing that you almost did.”

Lafiel places her free hand on the container next to Seelnay’s. She thought it would be cold but it was a neutral temperature. Thoughts that never flowed through Lafiel mind came to the surface. She thought about her own mortality and those near and dear to her. A hand gently fell upon her shoulder. She turned to see Li standing behind her. “Sorry to disturb you Princess. The council is ready to give you its decision.” Jinto spoke unconsciously. “Thank you. Do you directly represent the High Priestess? Because we were told not to enter the chamber without her and that the penalty is death. Sorry but I’ve seen enough death for one day.” Li assured Jinto that she represented the High Council and the High Priestess and that they were waiting for them. Li turned and led them into the council chamber.

Entering the chamber all of the members were standing showing a respect for them, that was missing from before. Li led them to the platform and motioned them to stand next to Erin, which they did. Once that was done Erin spoke. “Princess before we give you our answer we have one question.” Lafiel turns towards Erin. “Ask your question if I can answer it, I will.”

Erin motions to Scholar an image appears on the display and begins to play. Lafiel stares in awe. Erin notices Lafiel’s reaction and pauses the message before it starts. “I take it Princess you know this officer.” Lafiel swallows hard and says. “She’s my mother. When was this recorded?” Scholar answers with a date in Sol-Eros measure. Lafiel tries to correlate it into the Abh time frame remembering that one-year of her time equaled one and one-quarter years of Sol-Eros measure. “That must have been before I was aboard the Gosroth.” Lafiel looks at Erin. “May I hear the message?” Erin nods. Scholar plays it.

The scene is in the Great Council chamber Kyle, Erin’s father, is communicating his wishes to have a delegation from the Empire discuss a trade agreement with Sol-Eros. Plakia is listening intently she answers him back. “I have to admit your signal was very weak we almost missed it. I understand your wishes and I will convey them to my superiors you can rest assured of that. You should hear back from them in no more than one hundred eighty of your days.” Kyle went on to thank Plakia and the communication ended.

“The message was never delivered. Your first ambassador said so. Can you explain this Princess?” Lafiel was still fighting with the time conversion in her head. Finally she realized that the Gosroth had to be on its second shake down cruise. Lafiel faces Erin. “Shortly after that communication and before a star base was reached that officer and that ship were the first victims of the present war which the Empire is still engaged in. Ambassador Lynn and I escaped before the ship was destroyed.” She looks confused to Jinto and she continues. “What I can’t figure was we had the ships log. The data of that contact should have been on it. Why the ambassador did know or more importantly why you weren’t contacted, I can not explain.”

Erin glances at Scholar. “Priestess she has spoken the truth. There is much sorrow in her heart.” For the first time Seelnay senses a presences. After standing motionless beside Jinto she glances around the room. Jinto turns her way. “Seelnay what is it?” Seelnay fixes her gaze upon Scholar. “It coming from her. She has the ability to see, everything. I can feel her probing my mind as I speak.”

Seelnay addresses Scholar. “Stop what you are doing it’s not right.” Scholar faces her. “You can not stop me.” Suddenly the table moves towards Scholar at a rapid speed nearly hitting her. Scholar realizes not only can Seelnay defend herself. But also she did not require any instrumentation to do it as Scholar does. The mind probe stopped. Seelnay faces Erin. “You knew everything. You knew we were telling the truth. You know how many ships we have and where they are located don’t you?” Scholar speaks from behind Seelnay. “You hide your power well young one. You are correct as Scholar I can see everything with in several light years of Sol-Eros. It my duty report to the leader of our people, do not blame her. It is our custom. She seeks advice and I give it.”

Seelnay moves from Erin and steps in front of Scholar. “If you can see everything why didn’t you see your sun changing? Or are your powers artificially generated?” Scholar nods. “You are wise young one. I am an extension of the ship. I use its computer and sensors to project my mind through time and space. Only recently did I find the sensor array was damaged and the part that I would use to scan the sun was broken beyond repair.” Erin points a finger at Scholar. “Why didn’t you say something about this. How long have you known?” Scholar stops her. “Not very long. What were you going to do about it? I’ll tell you, nothing. There is nothing that can be done, except ask the Abh to relocate us before any more of us perish on this dying world.” The council sat silent so did Erin, Li and Kim. Scholar had said what everyone else was hesitant to. She had asked for the Abh to relocate the inhabitants of Sol-Eros. It was now up to Lafiel to respond. Lafiel chose the direct route. Raising her creunoc to her lips she said. “Bring the fleet in, we are relocating the inhabitants of Sol-Eros. Captain Ekuryua, please respond to and acknowledge my transmission.”

Ekuryua’s voice was heard she acknowledged Lafiel’s orders and asked if they needed anything. Lafiel spoke “Patience we need to exercise a lot of patience.” Turning to Erin. Lafiel continues. “Now it’s time for some honesty between you and I. We can move the people. How much of your technology do you want to bring with you?”

Scholar approaches Erin. Li and Kim are behind her. Scholar answers Lafiel. “We have relied on this technology for one thousand years and because of it as a race we have not grown. I suggest we take our history with us and leave most of the technology here.” Surprised Lafiel turns to Jinto. “They want to leave it here. I was not expecting that.”

“Lafiel we better figure out where they are going and then how much support they will need. Also we can’t leave this technology lying around. What if someone found it and used it against another race? We can’t be that irresponsible. Jinto swings his head from side to side. “First things first, where to place about twenty thousand people, then how much of their history and this technology to bring? Then I guess we better destroy the rest of it.” Kim steps forward. “Priestess I can show them around give them an idea of what is here. Erin nods. “Yes Kim you may show our guest around. Scholar and I need to have a discussion about other things.” Erin and Scholar walk towards the other members of the council. Kim motions Li to join him “Lets show them around let them see what our fore fathers left us.”

Since Lafiel’s communication. Ekuryua had started intensive scanning of Sol-Eros and it’s four moons. She discovered the defenses placed on the moon and realized that the planet could have defended itself at any time. Her communications with Sobbash led her to believe that the problems aboard her ship were under control and that Risch was on his way back. She held the transports out of the range of Sol-Eros’s defenses until she had conformation from the surface that they were disabled.

“Now show me the layout of the village in as much detail as possible.” The tactical officer places the scans on the display. “Captain the power reactor is underground at the northern end of the village. There seems to be an extensive sensor array at the western of the village it sits on the ridge overlooking the ocean. Finally Captain there is a ship buried under the village, most of the above ground structures are built on top of it and are probably connected to it.” Ekuryua approaches the display. “So they used the ship to live in and continue to utilize it as a structure.”

She looks south and sees a spot on the scan. “What is this?” The tactical officer says. “It’s something on the edge of the village. It won’t come clear from the angle we are scanning from.” Ekuryua moves to the navigator’s position. “Move the ship enough to scan that area, it might be nothing, but I’m not taking any chances.” The navigator complies and the spot moves to the center of the scan area. “Captain it’s a building but it’s reflecting our scans approximate size is thirty meters by fifty meters.” Ekuryua examines the scan data, “A building reflecting our scans, no sign of power generation, I wonder.” She moves to the tactical officer. “Keep watch on it. If something happens notify me.” The officer nods Ekuryua returns to her seat.

*********
“I’ll give you a brief history of the village. When the ship arrived our fore fathers scanned this planet found this site landed the ship here. Then they excavated the area that we are about to enter and buried the ship. The entire surface dwellings were pieces cannibalized from the ship, plus what materials we found on the planet. There is one lone remote building just south of the village it was constructed with the shielding from our main reactor. It is where our dead rest.” Li pressed the control pad the door opened and Lafiel gasped. What lay before them was a generation ship that predated Lafiel’s ancestors ships by over fifty years.

Li notices Lafiel’s awe in what she sees. “Princess we are the descendants of those who disagreed with your creators. My people left the Space City as the machines were becoming aware.” Li looks Lafiel in the face. “Your ancestors, those paranoid, bloody thirsty machines, that I though you were directly descended from. We knew someday some race would find us. We were initially shocked to find out it was the Abh who came calling and didn’t destroy us. You said the commander of the ship that contacted Kyle was your mother and she later died. My mother and Erin’s father died shortly after your mother left this system. I feel for your loss and realize you do have the best interest of my people at heart.”

Li words, the sight of the ship. The realization that Lafiel had suddenly found her ancestors. That there might be a way for the Abh to finally remove the burden from their shoulders. All of these thoughts rushed through her brain. Lafiel stood looking at history, her history, it lies before her and suddenly she felt so small and insignificant. Jinto takes Lafiel’s hand it’s cold and trembling he gives it a gently squeeze. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen you so quite before. Could you express what you’re feeling?” Jinto expecting a raging display from Lafiel found her looking at the ship and saying one word. “Hope.” He felt his hand being gripped by Lafiel’s she continued. “Hope for her people and for mine. Jinto, this would be like your finding your ancestors after you had been convinced that they all were dead.” Li motioned to Lafiel, “Then you should see this.” Sitting in front of the ship was a picture Lafiel looked carefully at it, “Are these?”

Li nods. “They are the crew and builders of this ship.” The picture shows a mixture of races in the photo with one blue haired person in the back row. Li went on. “Some of the original Abh were convinced that the group as a whole had reached the wrong decision, and this newly awaken one decided to come with us. Her descendant you have met.” Seelnay smiles, “It’s the one you call Scholar is it not.” Li nods, “Scholar was correct. You are very intuitive; her ancestors crossbred and lost most of the individuality that made them Abh. They kept their wisdom and ability to interface with this ship.” Li gave them the complete tour of the ship for the most part it was as it landed on Sol-Eros. Apart from the reactor being removed and placed north of the village in a solid rock cave. The instrumentation was removed and most of the amenities gone, it look as it would have once the ships hull was made airtight. “When the weather has been real bad we have used this ship as shelter. Most of the time, it sits as a reminder of the sacrifices that were made to get to this world.”

Li shows them from the ship and heads for the exit. “We were five thousand when we arrived here now we number a little over three.” Jinto stops. “Three thousand our scans showed.” Li nods. “That’s Scholars work. She fooled your sensors in to believing there were more here than there actually are. It has been her and her ancestors abilities that have kept us safe till now.” Exiting the ship Li says. “It’s midday, the radiation is too intense or I would show you more of the village. You are tired. You need to rest. My father will show you to a guest house where you may relax.” Li places her hood over her head and heads for the Council chamber.

Kim motions to the rest of them. “Follow me and stay in the shadows.” Lafiel says. “These uniforms are radiation proof do we really need to stay in the shadows?” Kim stops and faces Lafiel. “Yes unprotected skin will burn in less than two minutes blister in four and be beyond reconstruction in six.” The smocks we wear are like your radiation proof suits and still we have accidents.” Kim unbuttons his shirt his flesh shows signs of recent reconstruction. “I tripped and fell recently tearing the smock even holding it closed with my hand this happened. These shadow walkways are made with plate from the reactor room. We knew we were being bombarded with radiation. It’s just we didn’t know why. Please follow me we need to keep moving.” They made there way to a small building just east of the council chamber. Entering Kim points to the rooms. “Make use of these rooms as you wish. I’ll be back when the danger is passed.” Kim turns and leaves.

Seelnay found a bed and was asleep in an instant. Jinto found a comfortable chair and was sleeping soundly shortly after he sat down. Lafiel couldn’t sleep. The things she had seen everything that had happened since they left Ekuryua’s ship. The explosion, crash landing and Ku’s unnecessary death coupled with finding those related to the mother city left her mind in turmoil. She needed someone she could talk to. Someone removed from her present situation but aware of her feelings. Normally that would be Jinto, but his exhaustion left him unable to help her and she didn’t want to wait the several hours it would take for him to recover. Creunoc positioned, discreet frequency selected, she spoke softly as not to wake those around her. “Noel can you hear me?”

Sitting in her cabin for the last hour Ekuryua stared at the display. It had been several hours since the surface party had contacted her. All she could do was wait. Suddenly the silence was broken. “Noel can you hear me?” “Yes Lafiel I can. Where are you?” “In a guesthouse on the east side of the village. Jinto and Seelnay are asleep. Too much has happened today, I feel responsible for Ku’s death. These people are who I suspected them to be. I’ve seen the proof.”

“Lafiel the shuttle was sabotaged. The person responsible is dead. She committed suicide, and half the fleet is in disarray. I’ve taken tactical command of the hospital ship and the transports. There are two things you should know. The four moons contain defensive arrays and there is a building south of the village I can’t scan it. Until I know those arrays are disarmed I’m not bringing those transport in Lafiel. I can’t, you do understand?”

“Sabotaged? That will have to wait. Right now I can help you with the building. It’s where the dead are buried. The arrays. I’ll see that they are deactivated as soon as it’s safe outside to move about. This planet has such a hostile environment we better plan on evacuating the residents at night. During the day is impossible. The radiation levels are too extreme. Now I need your help? Are you somewhere you can talk freely?”

“I’m sitting in my cabin. There’s something troubling you isn’t there? Go ahead I’m listening.”

“Noel for the first time in a very long time. I feel remorseful, almost guilty. There is this feeling that I miss something and that something got Ku killed. I’m feeling right now that omission is going to cause a calamity on the relocation of these people. You’ve always looked at things far differently than I have. I need you to look through everything and find where I went wrong.”

“Already read your mind Lafiel. Risch just got back from doing an exhaustive search of the personal aboard Sobbash’s ship. He’s uncovered one item you might find interesting. Our saboteur joined the ship right before the battle at the Hyde system. Further investigation reveals she was not who she claimed to be. Does R.G.C.I.S. ring a bell? Best guess is she was part of the organization. You been a pawn Lafiel somebody wants either you and Jinto dead or the inhabitants of Sol-Eros.”

“Or all of us! Noel do you have any idea of what you just implied? Your saying some faction with in the royal family is behind this. Wait? Whoa! Now that makes sense. There was a transmission I was shown between a Star Forces vessel and this planet requesting a trade delegation about... Look Noel, it was the Gosroth and it was my mother. It had to have happened before I got picked up and right before the ship was destroyed. The data… I had it in the ships log and I turned it over to Spoor who gave it to the Grand Council. The information about Sol-Eros was on that crystal. Someone in the, Oh my.”

There was silence. “Lafiel are you alright? Lafiel!” The link was still open.

“Yeah I’m as good as can be expected. We need to finish this discussion in person. I’m swearing you to secrecy. I’ll call you when I know more. Right now figure out the fastest way to move three thousand people off this planet. I still don’t know where to take them but wherever it is the Capital is not to know, in fact I’m instructing you there will be no further communications with Spoor or any other ships till we have a handle on what’s going on. Well I guess you better tell Sobbash. She’ll go ballistic but she’s got a great head on her shoulders, as do you Noel. Think I’ll lie down for a bit, all of the sudden I’m really tired. I’ll be in contact soon and thanks.” The link closes.

Ekuryua presses the blue button on her communication console. “Sobbash you heard her? I think she knows but she is afraid, even on an encrypted channel to tell us. Guess we better carry out her wishes. Have you found any more information?”

“Medical is still going over the body. We are sure she was not who she pretended to be, but her DNA is hard to trace. I’m putting the body in storage till we get somewhere with access to the main genetic database. Although that may not be the best idea it would tip our hand. I’ll keep the body in storage, one thing at a time. We should use the ocean to the west for the transports to land, that’s about five kilometers from the village. Only three thousand to transport? Wow! We’ve got room for twenty thousand. Well better to have and not need than need and not have. I guess we are still waiting for the surface party to finalize the details, keep me informed. Sobbash out.” The link closes Ekuryua lays down on her bunk, she should be able to rest now.

*********
Jinto was the first one to wake up. He found Seelnay still in the bed asleep and Lafiel on couch cushions lying on the floor. He lies beside her and gently blew in her ear. “Jinto I’m trying to sleep, leave me till Kim or some member of the Council returns. I’m really beat.” Jinto stood and returned to his chair seating himself sleep returned. It was almost two hours past sunset when Li woke him. “We are ready to continue our planning. Have you rested enough?” Jinto nods he proceeds to wake Lafiel and Seelnay. They follow Li to the council chamber.

Exiting the shelter they are greeted with a solar display, like nothing any of the three of them had seen before. It resembled a gigantic electrical discharge although it never struck the ground. “Lafiel you think the transports will have trouble navigating that?” Lafiel still glancing sky ward comments. “We landed through it they should be able too.” Seelnay has been staring at the sky. “We didn’t land through that much of a storm. It would have hindered the landing even more. Excuse me, you said your name was Li?” Li nods. Seelnay continues, “Are there lulls to these storms or have they been getting progressively worse each night.” Li still walking toward the council chamber says. “They are very strong shortly after sunset but as the night continues they almost stop. Then as morning comes they pick up again.”

Seelnay taps Lafiel on the shoulder. “How good are your people at night landings? The transports will have to land in darkness unless.” Seelnay directs a question to Li. “Li how much light do the moons produce?” Li says. “There is enough to see well, but just for a couple of hours then the solar activity picks up and so does the cloud cover.” Seelnay gently kicks a rock it skips across the ground. “Night landings on water are dangerous at best, at worse, well we know how bad they can get.” She looks at Lafiel. “It’s something to think about Your Highness. Something to think about.” Seelnay taps another rock with her shoe, this time it tumbles uncontrollably off the path and into the tall grass.

Arriving at the council chamber they find Erin and Scholar waiting, “We’ve given a lot of thought to how much technology we would like to bring with us and it not very much, although there is one thing we wanted to discuss with you.” Lafiel stands listening. Scholar speaks. “We don’t want to leave the dead here, not for someone to find. We are at our wits end as what to do with them?” Jinto and Seelnay stand silent. Lafiel ponders for a moment and says. “You weren’t expecting us to transport them with you, were you?” Erin and Scholar both shake their heads. “No we weren’t, it would be sacrilege to do so. We just didn’t want to leave them where they could be readily found. Some way to hide them, maybe?”

Lafiel nods. “Where they are is imposable to scan inside from space, now all we have to do is not make it look like a building. How many dead are we talking about?” Scholar walks forward. “Twelve thousand–two hundred and seventy-five. All of the bodies are contained in containers like your friend is in, unlike his there is no power connected to them. Those bodies could never be regenerated again.” Lafiel stood silent. Scholar’s words rang in her ears.

It was Seelnay who asked the question, “Regeneration? How does that work?” Scholar looks at Seelnay. “As the body ages it is possible to stimulate cells to regenerate or rebuild the body. In the case of those buried in the building south of us, they were damaged beyond repair, or the cell structure had failed due to radiation. Your mate was damaged beyond repair. The reason the machine is running is to preserve the body till it can be buried. We on Sol-Eros do not believe in embalming practices. Had we the resources our dead would be traveling in space forever.” Seelnay understood for one brief second she hoped. But this made it certain Ku would never return to her.

Jinto had his own question. “So are any of you from the original group? Alive through regeneration?” Scholar chuckled. “Fountain of Youth they called it on the place some of these people came from. No young man there aren’t any of the original explorers among us. Through regeneration we can only live about three hundred and seventy-five cycles.” Lafiel got her math right this time. “So about three hundred of my years? Jinto, they really don’t live any longer than the Abh do.”

Scholar smiles. “If you look you’ll find part of your DNA pool is here among the residents of this planet. How you adapted your DNA the last thousand of your years is why you are as you are.” Lafiel smiled. “So you’ll admit we are related then?” Scholar raises an eyebrow. “We never said we weren’t related to you. You never said you were better and we never said we were. Those old feelings that drove us from the mother city, you no longer express them, that’s why we are willing to let you blindly move us off this planet hopefully to one similar so we can continue to live in peace.”

Lafiel changed her mood it was now time for business, the business of moving these people off this planet safely. The family reunion would have to wait. “What do you wish to take with you from your technology. I’d like to have an idea so I can co-ordinate with the transport captains. Scholar hands Lafiel a list written in early Abh, it takes her a second. “This can be done, except for moving the reactor. We’ll have to leave it here decommissioned. Where ever we take you we will supply you with all the stable power you need.” Scholar muses, “Well before you start dismantling things. Can you tell us how long we will be traveling? If it is going to be a while, then I need to run some of the residents of the village through one treatment before we leave. That does require a lot of power.”

Lafiel is flat footed, unlike Lobnas II she had no idea of where these people were going, catching herself she says, “Give me two hours to figure out travel time. Can you do that?” Erin and Scholar nod. Lafiel motions to Jinto and Seelnay to follow her, they walk out by where Ku lays Lafiel starts talking. “I need your help. We have to find somewhere we can take these people, a close and secluded a planet like this one.” Lafiel proceeded to consult her creunoc. The list of habitable planets with in the closest ten sectors appeared. One by one through reasons of politics, climate or over population planet after planet was eliminated.

Finally Lafiel expanded her search. The new list appeared before her. The system highlighted in green caught her attention. “Why didn’t I think of this sooner it’s the perfect place. There’s a coastline like this planet. It has climate like this planet and all the power and protection they would ever need.” Lafiel points the screen of her creunoc towards Jinto and Seelnay. The highlighted place is the Abause system, more over the fifth planet. “Well Jinto what do you think? Let’s move them there.” Jinto and Seelnay both continued to stare at Lafiel’s creunoc, finally Seelnay commented. “The area west of the island is very much like this place use to be and setting a reactor over there would not be a problem.”

Jinto continues to look. “Well they would be eight hundred kilometers west of the island. There is a lot of room on the planet and as Seelnay said power would be no problem.” He looks at Lafiel. “Do you want them that close to the Capital? I thought putting them out of the way.” Lafiel frowned. “Can’t be helped Jinto, this way when we are there or gone they’ll be protected as we are. It’s perfect don’t you think?” Jinto thought for a moment, having a neighbor was going to be something to get use to he figured. “Okay Lafiel now how do we get them there without everybody knowing, I mean once they are there and settled we can set the planet to announce anyone’s arrival but we should try to sneak them in.”

Lafiel stood there thinking she leaned against Ku container and it hit her. “They are worried about the dead and how to conceal them. They said they’d rather see them floating in space we will have an empty transport let load their dead on it. “ Jinto put his hand across her lips. “No Lafiel! No! No! No! Using the dead like that and then we would have to explain the reason. No Lafiel you think they’d come readily if they thought some in the Empire would like to see them dead?” Lafiel absorbed Jinto words it was Seelnay’s turn to speak. “I understand why you thought that Your Highness. This time I need to agree with the Count. We should leave the dead alone. Now as to getting them to the Abause system I think there is a way to do it undetected. Let me see your creunoc.”

Seelnay punched information into the creunoc a course line between their present position and the Abause system was displayed, “The only problem is getting past the Lashkau we need to transverse that one set of Sords then we can travel through normal space till we reach here the transition between Vorash and the Capital. Once through that we arrive in the Abause system six days latter. Refueling can be accomplished here; it’s a small refueling station that Greta and I set up before we came to work for the Count. It’s the most direct route and the least traveled it should be perfect. I figure travel time at one month.” Jinto and Lafiel consult the creunoc it was decide there. How the residents of Sol-Eros would be moved the Abause system.

“Now that we have this accomplished I figure we better let the fleet know, OH!” Lafiel winces, Jinto and Seelnay stare. “I forgot about the planetary defenses Ekuryua found. I need assurances they are turned off before the fleet approaches Sol-Eros.” Lafiel gathers herself. “First things first. Let’s tell the council the travel time and then get the defenses turned off.” In agreement they return to the council chamber. After explaining the travel time and location of the new planet, Scholar said the planetary defenses were off line. Lafiel called the fleet in and requested that Samson and Risch bring a shuttle down. It was a two part decision one Lafiel wanted engineers down on the surface to thoroughly examine the Sol-Eros technology and secondly she wanted to have a shuttle on the planet even though Sol-Eros residents were offering her every comfort. There were comforts and resources aboard the shuttle she needed now.

*********
“Sobbash when you get here. I want you to take control of the orbiting fleet. I’m taking the shuttle down to the planet.” “Understood Ekuryua. We’ll be there in about an hour. Sobbash out.” Standing in the middle of the bridge Ekuryua says to her command staff. “Follow Admiral Sobbash’s orders, but keep an watchful eye on the planet. This is the ship I’ll contact if we need help, understand?” The crew nods. Ekuryua turns to her first officer. “I plan on descending over the ocean to the west of the village then proceed towards it scouting landing sites for the transport ship. I’ll cross the beach about dusk and land in the village before dark. I want this ships resources to track us and gather all of the data. Then once on the surface we can compile it. There will be no more accidents and no more deaths understand me?” The first office nods. Ekuryua leaves the bridge.

Meeting Risch in the shuttle bay Ekuryua looks over the craft. The crests of the Crybh and Hyde families occupied the space to the right of the main door. “We put a scratch in this shuttle and the Princess will have my hide.” Ekuryua finishes the outside inspection she and Risch enter the craft. The data crystal checks all of the systems while Risch does a quick inspection visually. Sitting next to Ekuryua he comments. “The ship looks fine nothing out of the ordinary, ready to open the launch doors?” Ekuryua nods, their plan is to rendezvous with Sobbash pick up Samson and head for the surface. The ship cleared, Ekuryua heads for Sobbash’s ship, picks up Samson and heads for the surface.

Passing her ship again. She remembers that everything makes a difference and with a fierceness she descends into the upper atmosphere. Leveling off at three thousand meters Ekuryua scans the shoreline near the village. The area seems pretty straightforward. The beach tapers gently into the water, there is an established path from the village to the shore.

Passing over the village she spots the impact site of the first shuttle. She scans the area and shakes her head pointing to the display she said to Risch. “We were lucky that three of them survived the crash.” Risch understood Ekuryua’s point. “You think Samson and I should go have a look at the crash site? We could see if there is any information we can glean from it? Ekuryua looks at the village. “Depends on how this evacuation goes, one way or the other this wreckage will not be left on this planet.” Risch nods. “Then you plan on destroying the shuttle before you leave the system. “ Ekuryua nods. The shuttle lands at the place marked out for the first one. It’s an uneventful landing.

Walking from the edge of the tree line come Jinto, Lafiel and Seelnay. Following them are Kim and a couple of the villagers carrying torches. Ekuryua opens the shuttle door. Samson, Risch and She depart the shuttle. They meet about two meters from the shuttle. Samson speaks first. “Glad to see you three.” He walks over to Seelnay. “Sorry about Ku.” She falls into his arms crying. Jinto and Lafiel face Ekuryua and Risch. “Everything looks fine Princess. We’ll be able to land the transport at the western shore. There is a path that leads from the village to the shore. It’s perfect.”

Ekuryua steps towards them. “I saw the crash site. Don’t ever do anything like that again. Please.” Lafiel nods. “We know where we are taking them ready to see?” Ekuryua looks at Lafiel’s creunoc the course is marked in red. “Well I’ll be. That’s the last place I would have thought of. But it is perfect and having neighbors might do you some good. You could hone your social skills.”

Lafiel shook her head. “Stop while you’re ahead Ekuryua. You can spend the next month razzing me. Right now we got three thousand people and a considerable amount of technology and artifacts to move.” Lafiel says to Samson and Risch. “When we get to the village I need you two to compile a complete history of everything you find. Then we need to decommission their reactor and camouflage their burial building.”

Risch faces Jinto. “You look pretty good, I take it she’s running the show?” Jinto smiles. “She’s doing a pretty good job of it. She’s stumbled a couple of times but has recovered very well. I think she’ll be fine.” He motions Risch closer. “She’s still blaming herself for Ku.” Risch steps back and nods. Lafiel says. “We are time limited we need to do as much as we can before sunrise after that we can chit chat. Let’s get going.” She turns toward the path that leads to the village. Kim and the villagers follow the six of them supplying light for the short journey to the village. The village bathed in moonlight greets them. Samson, Risch and Ekuryua are in awe. It’s haunting beauty defies words.

Lafiel turns to Kim. “Could you show these two to the buried ship and the reactor, then if you have time by the burial grounds.” Kim nods; Seelnay says she’ll go with Samson and Risch. Lafiel turns towards Jinto and Ekuryua, “Guess we go meet with the council. Oh Ekuryua watch your words, they speak Abh very well.” Ekuryua looks to Jinto. “You are letting her run the show? That’s a good thing if she’s busy maybe she’ll leave the two of us alone.” Lafiel marching towards the council chamber says, “Noel you’re really pushing your luck. You could wind up in a very difficult place if you keep this teasing up.” Ekuryua smiles she says to Jinto. “I see she’s back to her old obnoxious self, this is a great relief.” Jinto sheepishly grins. “Yes it’s good to have her back again.”

Entering the council chamber Scholar greets them. “Captain Ekuryua I assume?” Ekuryua is stunned. “Yes I am and you are the one I spoke with to get landing guidance?” Scholar nods. “That is correct, your approach and landing were uneventful then?” Ekuryua nods. Scholar turns to Lafiel. “I’ll take it your engineers are surveying the rest of our complex?” Lafiel nods. “We should be able to start with the transfer of your equipment. Are you done with your examination of the residents?” Scholar nods. “Yes we are good for a couple of months I figured that’s the amount of time we’ll need to get settled and have a new village built.” Lafiel muses, “Maybe sooner the planet has a lot of resources yet to be tapped. A village might be ready before you get there.”

Erin comes into the conversation she had been standing behind Scholar. “I’ve instructed the my people to pack their personal belongings, besides the equipment we ask for there are some other items we realized we will need.” Erin hands Lafiel a list of items she studies it carefully and shows it to Ekuryua and Jinto. “These shouldn’t pose any problems, I was wondering when I’d get this list. Do you have packaging material or do we need to supply some for you?” Erin tilts her head from side to side. “Princess I believe we have everything we should need if not I’ll contact you. Then these items are acceptable.” Lafiel nods. “They are. I’ll move every bit of your heritage I can, seeing it’s part of my heritage too. How soon should I bring the transport down?” Scholar answers that question. “I figure we will need about five evenings to collect everything then maybe another two to assemble it. About one week should do.” Lafiel agrees and she Jinto and Ekuryua leave.

Outside the chamber Lafiel stops and turns to Jinto and Ekuryua. ”This is perfect I don’t think I could have planned it any better.” Jinto and Ekuryua stare at Lafiel, undaunted she continues. “Samson and Risch will make their survey. I’ll send Samson with the empty transport to the Hyde Depot to get the reactor and building materials. They will be two weeks doing that. Then it’s one week to get to the planet and that will leave them two weeks to set up the village. Seeing if all goes a planned here we’ll be at the planet in five weeks too.” Jinto looks at the ground. “Well that’s fine Lafiel did you ask them what kind of village they wanted or are you recreating what is here? Who knows after a thousand years they might want something different to live in and look at.”

Lafiel stands glancing at the village her right foot gently tapping the soil. “Yeah Jinto you might be right, I just wanted everything to be perfect that’s all.” Jinto looks in Lafiel’s eyes. He sees the disappointment that his words have caused. “There is one way to settle this, we walk back inside and ask them what their plans are. We shouldn’t be disappointed if they don’t know either. They’ve never seen the place we are taking them to, once there they may want something built to either blend in or stand out, it is their choice.” Lafiel tugs at her tunic tosses her hair straight and says. “So back inside we go, let’s ask them what they want and if the don’t know at least we can provide them with basic shelters. I think that the least we should do, don’t you?” Jinto and Ekuryua nod in agreement they follow Lafiel back inside.

*********
“Mister Samson. We have about one and a half hours before sunrise. If you are finished here. I’d like you to see the burial facility.” Kim stood at the entrance to the reactor Samson and company had toured the buried ship and the reactor made their scans and had ask enough questions to leave Kim convinced that the Abh really cared about his people and their welfare. “Yes. I do believe we are finished here. Let’s head in that direction.” Kim turned to lead the way Samson and Risch followed but Seelnay was a little skittish. Noting her hesitance Kim said. “It will be just the outside of the building, only certain members of the council may enter the facility. I assure you we have no evil spirits lurking on this planet.” Kim’s words brought some comfort to Seelnay. She placed herself between Samson and Risch. They followed Kim to the burial facility.

“We will supply basic shelters and a reactor larger than the one on this planet. We’ll help Scholar with her sensor array, and move the people and belongings of Sol-Eros. Finally we will help camouflage the burial site and make sure no remnants of the village remain. That is the agreement.” Erin, Li, Kim and Scholar nod. Erin speaks. “Yes Princess that will be fine. We need another couple of days before you bring your transport to the surface.” Lafiel smiles. “That’s not a problem. I’ll get ready to send the other transport off to gather the reactor and building materials.” Ekuryua creunoc flashes she excuses her self from the room. Stepping outside she opens the link, “What is it?” “Captain the marker beacon you left at the Sord leading to the Lashkau is sounding. Something has tripped it. Looks like we have company.”

Ekuryua acknowledges the transmission. Stepping back inside she explains to Lafiel what is going on Scholar overhears them. Walking to her table in the council chamber Scholar touches two sensor panels. The main display in the chamber comes to life and a communications shuttle is shown in plane space headed this way. Scholar expands the view the Lashkau is seen leaving the Sord at high speed. Lafiel asks Scholar if she can project their course. A pale blue line appears it’s heading straight for Spoor’s territory. Lafiel thanks Scholar. The view returns to the shuttle Scholar comments “Princess they are in a big hurry. They’ll be here in twelve hours. Would you like to speak with them now?” Lafiel stares at Scholar. “You can do that? Communicate from normal space to plane space?” Scholar nods. “Give me a moment for the reactor to stabilize and we can start.”

“Our orders are to relay the message from Commander Kufadis await a reply from the fleet commander and return to the Lashkau. Another twelve hours at this speed and the fuel will be exhausted. We’ll need to refuel from the fleet, I hope the have extra to spare.” The Captain of the shuttle scans the space before him. “Well at least it’s a straight shot to the Sol-Eros system.” The communication officer stops him. “We are being hailed from the Sol-Eros system. It’s Her Highness.” Stunned the Captain says, put her on. “Shuttle approaching Sol-Eros, identify yourself.”

“Did they hear me?” Scholar nods. “They did, you might have to convince them some more.” Lafiel steps closer to the display. “Shuttle approaching Sol-Eros I am requesting you establish communications and deliver your message.” The display flickers and the Captain of the shuttle appears. “Your Highness I have a message from Commander Kufadis it requires an answer from either you or the fleet commander.” Lafiel looks at Scholar. “How do we handle this?” Scholar takes an optical cable and hands it to Lafiel. “Plug this in your communication device. I’ll act as a relay for the file transfer. I promise I’ll not know its contents.” The cable interfaces with her creunoc the crystal turns blue and Lafiel says. “Shuttle transmit your message I’m ready to receive it” The crystal modulates in color as the data is transmitted to it. The file finished Lafiel tells the shuttle to standby by and she motions for her group to follow her outside.

“Lets see what Kufadis has to say.” Lafiel starts the file playing. “Commander Sol-Eros expedition this is a two part message. First part. The Admirals condition has me returning her to her territory where she can receive better attention there than aboard ship. We are proceeding there as you hear this. Secondly and more important your failure to contact anyone after leaving this area has caused the fleet command to start a search for you. Admiral Nastoyia is eight days from entering the Sol-Eros Sord. Her orders are to intercept and return the transports to an undisclosed location. She has been authorized to use deadly force if necessary. I was really torn between staying and helping and the Admirals welfare. Tell the crew of this shuttle some way I can contact you and please take care you know how ruthless Nastoyia can be.” The message ends. Lafiel stomps her foot to the ground.

“Change of plans people, we’ve got six days to be clear of this system before Nastoyia shows up. Ekuryua get Sobbash on line tell her about this message. Let her know Samson will be leaving the surface shortly. They are to make the best time to the Hyde Depot pick up supplies, the reactor and by my orders commandeer all ships in the area. Then meet us at the transition to the Vorash Sord.” She looks at Seelnay. “You go with Samson, take Ku’s body and bury him. We’ll meet you at Vorash.” She looks at Jinto. “We go in and tell them the truth, there are a bunch of smart people on this planet. I’ll not keep them in the dark any longer. Right now we need everyone’s help. I know what to tell Kufadis too. I’ll encode it so only he will understand. Are we ready to go back inside?” Everyone nods they return to the council chamber.

“That’s the message for Commander Kufadis?” Lafiel stands before the display. “Deliver it word for word, now reverse course. You still can catch them before they are out of range.” The shuttle does an about face and heads for normal space. Lafiel looks at Scholar. “About how long till their clear of the Sord?” Scholar studies the sensor panels “About an hour but there is something on the edge of the sensors that intrigues me more. Come look at this Princess.” Lafiel walks to the display what she sees she already knows about. “I know about those ships. That’s part of the message I just received.” Lafiel proceeds to explain the happenings, in a fair amount of detail, that lead them to come to Sol-Eros and the purpose of the ships that were approaching.

As Lafiel finished Scholar spoke. “So not all of the Abh are happy to know we still live. I’m not surprised. You understand once we are relocated I can make us invisible to all spacecraft. You just need to move us we can do the rest.” Lafiel smiles. “There is an added bonus, the planet we are moving you to belongs to me. It is under my protection and it is sovereign. No one in the Empire would dare trespass its borders.”

Scholar nods. “First thing is to get us off this planet. Once in plane space I can also make your fleet disappear. Then we can travel in obscurity to the new world. I also have something I’d like to discuss with the council can you please excuse us?”

Lafiel and company leaves the chamber. Outside she comments. “We have six days before we must leave this system. These people are packed. At dusk have the transport land. We will load it and then secure the village. I’m not sure what to do about their dead though.” Risch nods. I guess the reactor is going to be a problem too, six days with Samson gone I can’t get everything accomplished in that time.” Ekuryua asks. “You’re ordering Sobbash to commandeer everything she can find in your name. Are you planning to go to war with you own family?”

Lafiel nods. “Someone with a lot of power is pulling strings, I can’t count on the Capital for help and I’ll not go down without a fight. Twice somebody has tried to kill me. I’m getting really tired of having to look over my shoulder all the time. So it ends now. One way or the other it ends now. For my and these peoples happiness.” Lafiel looks at the faces of her friends they tell the story without words. “I see there is no argument. You people agree with my thoughts?” There is a group nod. “Then lets get this voyage home started.”

To be continued in The Voyage Home.
