Based on what I've heard about previous Casshern stuff, I figured this would be a show all about kicking robot ass by punching them in the face or letting your robot dog rip their faces off.
Well, I did get some of that, but I also got a lot of introspection and oppressive/dissonant mise-en-scene. In other words, it's smarter and more moody than I thought it was going to be. I would definitely say it's among the best anime that's come out in the past couple years, so I'd encourage everyone here to check it out.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that this show wasn't fanservicey enough to be wildly popular.

You would be absolutely correct. In fact, I can't remember a single instance of fanservice...besides one scene that was deliberately off-putting. So, yeah, it got far less attention than I think it deserved.
