Confrontation

“Did they receive the transmission?” “Yes Kilo Commander just before they entered the Sord.” “Very good work, now erase all traces of the communications. You did use the altered code?” “Yes they will think it came from the Capital.”
The channel closes. The figure in the darkened room reflects on what has just transpired. “That hot headed little Ablïarsec bitch. She’ll see that message and seize command of the attack frigate. Once they get to the location in the message, we can discredit her. She got too nosy, too close. She needs to be silenced and quickly. She does not trust Captain Ekuryua. It’s a perfect plan to discredit that brat Princess and to shift the blame away from Me.” The figure leaves the room and joins the Ships Company.

*********
“Captain. We can turn around as soon as that transport ship is clear.” The navigator said. “How soon to normal space?” Ekuryua leans forward to view the display. “About four hours. It was unfortunate that the regularly scheduled supply run was approaching the Sord or we could have reversed course immediately.” She sits back in her chair. “Very well. Turn us around and maintain enough distance from those transports. You know they almost stop to exit the Sord. We don’t want to run into one now do we?” The navigator agrees. He slowly starts the maneuver to reverse the course. Always keeping a lot of distance between the transport and their ship.

*********
Lafiel lies on the bunk in their quarters. The words floating on the ceiling above her head. “You are to arrest the Princess and take her to Admiral Kotoponi’s fleet and turn her over. She is to await trial on the charges of treason against the Empire.” She kept thinking. “What did I do? Who did I betray? Treason! It’s been four hundred years since anybody was brought up on charges of treason.” The more she looks at it, the more disturbed she got. Touching her creunoc she calls. “Jinto where are you?” He replies he is in engineering. “Stop by the bridge and bring Captain Ekuryua to the cabin please?” Jinto stands in the engineering lift; Lafiel’s voice was so calm so sure of itself. What had she found out? Entering the bridge he asks Ekuryua to follow him, which she does readily. They approach the cabin and Jinto opens the door.

Lafiel still was lying on the bunk staring at the ceiling. “Too convenient. It’s too convenient. We were leaving Vorash. The message should have reached the orbital platform first. Then have been relayed to us. The Vorash controller never tried to stop us or even hail us? Did they?” Ekuryua stands in the doorway. The door was beeping. It was trying to close. “In or out! But stop that noise.” Lafiel said. Noel steps in and the door closes. “You’re right. Not a word and we just passed a supply convoy. Not a peep out of them, even when we turned to follow them.” Jinto sat in the chair next to the bunk Noel leans against the door. “Lafiel? Do you think it’s a hoax?” Noel asks.

“There is one way to find out. Can we station keep near the Sord? I don’t want to enter normal space.” Noel nods. “That’s easy. The supply convoy will take a while to clear. We can sit fifteen thousand meters off the event horizon and no one would know we are there. Why do you ask?” Lafiel sat up and faces her. “I need to speak to my brother through the Vorash relay station using a highly encrypted Imperial code. I’ll need an hour or more to do that. Depending on what he says, we either proceed to the location in the message, or we go to the Hyde system gather some allies. Then, go find this message sender.” Either way someone has gone to great lengths to convince me I’m a criminal.” She looks at Noel. “The orders were for you to arrest me. Confine me to my quarters and deliver me to the location. Why did you disobey those orders?” Noel smiles. “Lafiel you’re a lot of things. But in my heart I know you’re not a traitor. I questioned those orders the minute I saw them.” Lafiel nods. “I see. One day you’ll tell me the things you think I am as well. Won’t you Noel?” Ekuryua leans forward, turns, and opens the door. “Maybe, Maybe not. I’ll let you know when we are in position Lafiel.” She leaves and the door closes.

Furious. Lafiel looks at Jinto. “Why can’t she ever give me a straight answer. Why?” Jinto removes himself from the chair. He pushes it beneath the desk and joins Lafiel on the bed. “That’s the way she’s been since we met her. I seriously doubt you or I are going to change her. Risch might, then again I do believe he likes her that way.” He put his arm around her side and pulls her head to his shoulder. “I wonder if you and I are ever to lead a normal life?” She puts her arm around him and nuzzles into his shoulder. “Jinto. Would you please define the word normal? Do you really want to be normal? You’ve always said normal would be boring. You want to be bored for the next two hundred and twenty five years or so?”

Sometimes he wishes Lafiel were a simple mountain girl. Nope that would not make him happy. Being in love with a royal pain in the butt Princess was to be his lot in life and he would not trade it for the universe. “Hey Lafiel?” She looks in the eyes, “Yes Jinto.” He kisses her. “You’re the most wonderful pain in the butt I’ve ever met. I shall not trade you for the universe.”

She pushes him into the bed and with his shoulders pinned she looks him in face. “Pain in the butt am I? I’m glad you realize there is nothing in the universe that can replace me. And Jinto, I’ll keep you as well. Right now. I need to start encrypting my message to my brother. After that can we have some quiet time together just the two of us?” Jinto tries to raise his head to kiss her. She moves out of the way. “Later Jinto, business before pleasure.” She pauses. “If I were a criminal you would still love me, wouldn’t you?” His kiss was his answer.

*********
“Captain we are receiving a transmission through the Vorash relay station. It’s in a encryption I don’t understand.” Kilo Commander Duhiel Ablïarsec rose from the center seat and moves towards the communications officer’s station. Looking over the officer’s shoulder he smiles. “Send that transmission to my cabin. I’ll decode it there.” He turns towards the lift and says to his first officer. “You have the bridge. I’ll be in my quarters.” The first officer took the center seat as Duhiel left the bridge. The trip to his cabin was a brief one, as he opens the door and turns on the lights. The flashing red lamp on communications console greets him.

“Well sister what sort of trouble have you gotten yourself into this time? You’re using our old emergency code. I almost did not recognize it.” Decrypting the message and reading it twice he calls the bridge. “Has there been any traffic directed at Vorash from the Capital?” “No captain it’s been quiet since we arrived on station.” “First officer, start making long range sweeps of the entire area. Bring the ship to alert condition two until further notice. I’ll be on the bridge shortly.” He closed the channel as he did the gentle chiming of the alert alarm penetrated the ship. The message posed no threat to him and his ship. But a little caution would go a long way. He sat composing a response to Lafiel.

*********
“Captain? How much longer do we need to hold this position?” Ekuryua lowers the data pad to her lap. “Until we receive the Princess response. Is there a problem?” The navigator shook his head. It was not really a problem, it was being that close to the event horizon of a Sord was playing havoc with the instruments and was giving him a headache. He hopes the message would arrive soon.

*********
Jinto sat in the cabin. He had just tucked Lafiel in to bed and was composing his own message to Samson. Heading for the bridge he stops at Seelnay’s quarters and briefs her on what was happening and the message he was sending to Samson. She looks at him, her face very serious in its expression. “I don’t like this at all. I’ve had a bad feeling since we entered the Sord. Now I know why. You have to keep her from fighting. She’s not able to go into combat. She still is not fully recovered. If she fights you will lose her Count Hyde I can feel it.” Jinto looks at her in amazement. How did she know this? He questions Seelnay on her comments.

Her answer was complete and irrefutable. “I’ve massaged her several times. She does not have her complete physical strength back and I really question her ability to be able to command. She can not keep a straight train of thought going. She wanders off topic. Have you not noticed it?” Jinto had noticed that from time to time Lafiel would start a conversation or express a thought and would either never finish it, or he would have to ask her what she meant. He never gave it any mind till now. If Lafiel was to go into combat she would have to be better than one hundred percent or. Jinto thanks Seelnay for her concerns and leaves for the bridge. He asks Ekuryua to send the message to Samson and returns to their quarters.

He slips into the bed and Lafiel woke. “My response. Is it here?” Jinto said no not yet, then he started questioning her on her intentions. “You want to defend your honor from the center seat don’t you?” She sat up. Jinto sat up along with her, and she turns towards him. “Jinto somebody has tarnished my honor and my family name. I’m not going to sit by idly and do nothing. If doing something means taking a ship and doing battle. Then that’s is what will happen.” Jinto took her hands. “I’m worried Lafiel. You’re not well yet. I don’t feel you’re ready to go into combat.”

She tried to strike him. But he held her hands firmly. The more she struggled. The weaker she became. In a short time she was laying on Jinto’s chest the energy drained out of her. “Lafiel you should have beaten me. We are in reduced gravity. I’m sorry you’re not fit to command, and until you can prove it to me. I’ll oppose you. Because I won’t lose you.” Jinto felt his chest getting wet. Her tears were streaming down her face and soaking into his shirt. He raised her head and kissed her lips. “Get some rest Lafiel. As soon as the response comes in I’ll get you. I love you and I want you healthy. I will do anything to defend you and your honor. But I can not allow you to endanger yourself or the lives of others.” He wipes the tears from her face and covers her up. She was already asleep. He left the cabin heads for the bridge. He stops and thanks Seelnay for being so blunt. She had opened his eyes to Lafiel’s real condition.

*********
“Captain. Message sent. Scans are normal. Your orders?” Duhiel looks at his first officer. They had gone to school together and he had turned down several promotions to stay with his friend and he felt future Emperor. “Let’s return to our previous posture, but be a little more vigilant. If we were to need help the closest ships are?” His first officer looks at the tactical display. “Captain the training fleet is less the twelve hours away. Their proposed war games, will bring them about four hours from us in the next three days.” Duhiel looks at the planet below and out to the limitless space. “Contact the training fleet when they are within direct communications range and ascertain their plans past the war games. You have the bridge. I’m off to diner.” He leaves the bridge.

*********
“Message received captain.” Ekuryua verifies the transmission is complete. “Back us away from the event horizon and station keep till I receive orders from the Princess.” The navigator moves them point seven -five light seconds from the Sords event horizon. The static and distortion disappear and the job of station keeping becomes much easier.

The door chime goes off and Jinto opens the door. Ekuryua is standing there. “We received the message. It’s on your terminal. I’d like to stay if I can?” Jinto looks over Lafiel is asleep. “Let me wake her and I’ll call you.” The room fills with the sounds of Lafiel coming to. She sat up in bed the blinking red lamp greeting her. She saw Ekuryua standing with Jinto. “Come in you two. I’m awake and it’s here. Let’s see what we’ve got.”

She activates the display and plugs in the decrypting code a visual display opens. “Hello Lafiel, I wanted to address you in visual mode. To answer your question there has been no communication between the Capital and Vorash since the time we arrived on station. Now I’ve done several deep sweeps of the area and besides the training fleet located here.” *another display opens and the area is highlighted* “This is the latest tactical display. As you can see the gap in the defenses between Nastoyia’s fleet and the Capital is great. I’ve heard that Admiral Bebaus Fleet, here, has been given to father to command and fill in this gap. Lafiel I’m very sure that your message came from beyond the Hyde Sord, my best guess would be Nastoyia’s fleet or somewhere close to it. Whoever sent this has covered their tracks well. You might be able to get more information at Hyde system. Finally Sis, I care dearly about you and I know how your anger can cloud you judgment. Count Hyde, I know your there. Take care of my sister keep her from harm and from herself. Lafiel. I’ll see you soon everything here is fine not to worry.” The display dims and the message ends. Lafiel turns to Noel. “You heard my brother, the emperor to be. To the Hyde Sord.” Noel leaves the room and heads for the bridge.

The door shut and Lafiel explodes. “That brother of mine! I’ll vaporize him! That…” She stops and motions to Jinto he approaches her a little unsure of what she wants. She dove into his arms. “I’m having trouble. All of the sudden everyone seems to care deeply about my welfare. I know Duhiel is right and I know he’d be really mad if I got hurt. He said father was going into battle again. Well maybe. Here I am the sick one unable to fight or defend myself from even you.” She stood holding him. “Jinto. I’m not a coward or a weakling.” He held her. “Lafiel. It will be all right. You need to rest and your body will finally catch up. You’ve done more than you should have. We know this condition is not permanent. So just be patient a little longer.” He puts her back to bed. They were four days from the Hyde Sord. She was going to rest the balance of the trip even if he had to have Seelnay watch her.

“Paveryua come to the control room!” The urgency of Samson’s voice brought to the room in record time. “What is it Samson? What’s the problem?” Samson had Jinto’s message open and Paveryua read over his shoulder. Is this somebody’s idea of a bad Joke?” Paveryua asks. Samson shook his head. “No. It’s very real. Someone wants Her Highness in shackles in the worst way. They almost got away with it. At least Seelnay’s with them. The Princess will be easier to handle with the two of them. I don’t understand this last line.”

Samson points at the screen. Paveryua looks and smiles. “Seems wing officer Lynn is asking us to gather a fleet assessment report.” Samson looks at him. “I gathered that. Why would he?” Samson and Paveryua came to the same conclusion at the same instant “She’s going after the message sender. She’s planning on commandeering everything that can fight around here.” They both look at the freshly refitted Kal class floating in the repair dock. “She gets her hands on that. She’ll have the most powerful battleship in the fleet. I don’t think Spoor will give it up without a good fight though.”

Punching the yard manifest Samson takes note.” Half of Atosuryua attack frigates are here. Lets see, Twenty Kal class, one super Kal class and three Roil classes, one of them being the Basroil. We got enough personnel to man all, but the Basroil and it’s still not refitted completely.” He looks at Paveryua. “Two or three days?” Paveryua pulls up the station spares. Two if we use the normal anti proton cannon. But there is one more of the anti matter beam cannons, that would double it’s firepower. Three days if we do it that way. I’ll modify the engines to the newer spec. It will be very maneuverable in normal space. The cannon and shield modification will make it difficult to be damaged in plane space. It won’t be invincible but it will be a very safe ship.” Samson agrees. Paveryua left to gather a team to finish the Basroil.

Kenesh floats over her desk. The data before concerns the rifle shot. The evidence was still inconclusive, but the time had come to confront Nastoyia with it and see how she reacts. The problem was getting through to Admiral Nastoyia. It was becoming almost impossible. Direct communication with the Admiral could not be established. Always her Chief of Staff answers and wants to take a message. Kenesh was not in the mood to share the information with her Chief of Staff.

Something else would need to be done and quickly. Her ten days were about up. Opening a Comm link she summons a high-speed shuttle to transport her to Sord 577. Her second link went to Ramaj. “You have a command staff ready?” Ramaj answers they would be waiting at the shuttle. Then she adds. “Admiral Kotoponi will intercept you and provide you an escort to Sord 577. But if it starts to go wrong out there, get back here. I’ve positioned Admiral Trife’s fleet to cover your retreat. Lastly we have found the Rebel base. It’s where he said it would be. The scouting fleet just reported in and they will join up with Nastoyia fleet in six days. Good luck Kenesh.”

Kenesh normalized the gravity and shut down the displays. Removing a class three-laser pistol from the upper desk drawer she straps it on and proceeds to the docking bay. It’s had been sometime since she was last in the field. She wonders if she would still be able to cope.

The door to the docking bay opens and a surprise awaits her. “Hello Nefee. Seems you’re going with me?” He nods. “I’m to take command if you find Nastoyia unfit. Then destroy the Rebel base taking no prisoners. Those are my orders.” The family dispute that had separated the twins left Nefee to be promoted. He was equal to his brother finally an Admiral of the Empire. His bloodthirsty attacks had earned him the title of the Bloody Bebaus. A title he was very proud of. He follows her into the shuttle hoping that Nastoyia would be relieved of her command. A fleet and an enemy to crush it made him blush. The shuttle departs the Capital. It would take a little more than fifty hours to join up with Admiral’s Kotoponi’s fleet.

The slowest pace that the machine could maintain is where it was set. Spoor had gone about twenty minuets at this slow pace. Twice she reached to increase the speed and Kufadis note stops her. It says. “Follow the routine or you will wind up in a wheel chair! It’s your choice Admiral!” She quietly curses Kufadis. She knows he is right. But accepting orders from a mere commoner is embarrassing. She quietly plods along the muscles in her legs accepting this new pace she was going at. When she finishes she walks to the hot tub. She sat soaking, it felt wonderful her legs did not feel like dead weight anymore and her back felt relaxed.

The soak completed. She dresses and slowly walks back to her room. Opening the door she finds Kufadis reading a book. Hearing the door open he lowers the book. “Have a nice session Admiral?” She walks over to him. “Stand up Kufadis!” He stands. The smile on her face was unusual. She gently wraps her arms around him and placed her head on his shoulder. “Thank you Kufadis. Thanks for caring about me. It’s been so long since anybody cared for me I’d almost forgotten.” She stops. Kufadis wraps his arms about her middle careful to avoid the injury to her back. He speaks over her shoulder. “One day you will share things with me about your past. Until then let’s look forward to the future together. Not that I’m saying to ignore the past. But it has its time to be revealed, and now. I’m more than happy to have you feeling better and here with me. Do you understand?”

She held him. “I understand. When did you fall in love with me Kufadis?” He pauses. “It’s been awhile. What convinced me that I loved you was when you came to on the bridge after the explosion. I willingly set your leg then you smiled and passed out. For a moment I thought I’d killed you then I saw you were still breathing. You were laying their unconscious for so long. I started missing you. Then and there I decided to express my feelings to you no matter what your response was. To my surprise, you willingly accepted my feelings and expressed your own.”

He lifts her head from his shoulder. “When did you fall in love with me Admiral?” She smiles. ”The first time I really teased you. I though you were either going to faint or pee your pants. You did neither. You gained my interest at that moment. Then. I woke up on the hospital ship and found you their looking worse than I felt. The attendant told me you had hardly left my side since you carried me on board. I knew then I did not want to lose you.” She kisses him. “You’ll have to keep me, I guess. You’ve got to much time invested in me to just let me go.” Standing in one place was starting to get to her. Kufadis helps her into bed. He kisses her forehead. “We’ll take another go at this in the morning. You get some rest Admiral.” She smiles and drifts off to sleep. Kufadis lowers the lights and leaves the room. He had a very warm feeling inside.

*********
“Still no communications from Admiral Kenesh?” The communications officer answers, “Not yet.” She slams her fist on the desktop and ends the link. Frustrated Admiral Nastoyia lay on her bunk staring at the ceiling. Up on the bridge the communications officer had a question. “That was the fifth time today Kilo Commander. How much longer do we lie to her?” The Kilo-Commander looks at her. “Your in this as deep as I am. You’ll keep your opinions to yourself Decca Commander. Have I made it perfectly clear?” the Decca-Commander stares at her terminal in silence.

*********
The first day Lafiel slept in their cabin. Seelnay dropped in and gave her a bath and rub down. Jinto brought her meals throughout the day. While she slept, Jinto visited the engineering department and spent time on the bridge with Ekuryua. Returning to their cabin Seelnay stops him. “Count Hyde can I have a moment of you time?” Jinto stops, and looks around. They find a meeting room and sit in it.

“Seelnay what’s on your mind?” Seelnay sat there staring off in space. ”It’s her muscle tone. She losing it, no matter how much I massage her. She is still like a rag doll, all soft and mushy. I’m beginning to worry at first I thought it was my hands. They are not as strong as they were twelve years ago when I first met Her Highness. But I just gave the Captain a massage and she felt very normal. What I would expect Her Highness to feel like. When we get to Hyde she needs to see a doctor. Something is wrong, that’s all I can tell you.”

Jinto reflects. She was feeling a lot softer than she normally did. He just figured it was her body adjusting to growing at such a late age. Dr Sasoum had said she would experience a lot of changes in the next six months. Although two months had already passed and Lafiel did not seem to be getting any better, maybe Seelnay was right. There was an excellent medical facility on the depot and Dr. Sasoum was just a few hours away by Comm link. Jinto thanked her and went off to their cabin. Entering the room Lafiel lay sleeping. Jinto stood alongside the bunk and grabs Lafiel’s arm. Seelnay was right it felt very soft. Applying gentle pressure he could feel her bone under the muscle that readily gave way under the pressure he was applying. Lafiel moves, he releases her arm and leaves the cabin.

The ship had an extensive library. Jinto spent the rest of the day reading up on Abh physiology. They never went into this much detail in school, he thought. The Abh make up was such to accept high-speed acceleration they were extremely solid in bone structure but the joints and muscles allowed for extra movement, they were very pliable. In the reduced gravity Lafiel would easily have overpowered Jinto. Her muscles were accustomed to the momentary stresses of space travel, not the daily strain of planetary life. Overall she was the same physical height as Jinto however she weighed more than he did, the difference being the increased bone mass. Now she had lost tone in her muscles the simplest thing even in reduced gravity tired her. The data suggested several courses of action, however all of them recommended a complete physical before starting any treatment.

While this wealth of information was lying before him. Jinto decided to study the Abh physiology further. The reproductive system. The information here seemed very dated. Then he realized Abh women don’t normally have babies. The early centuries of Abh reproduction were well documented. However with the advent of the birthing chambers. The study of Abh reproduction within the females ceased. There were a few comments on women that had carried to term and some of the difficulties encountered. The last recorded pregnancy to term was fifty years ago. He did find a diagram of a pregnancy assistance device. It looked like the pocket of a slingshot and went around the abdominal area of the woman to help support the child. It was explained that some women’s abdominal muscles could not support the child properly and the device prevented muscle strains and possible tears, which could be harmful to the child. “Now I see why doctor Sasoum was so insistent on Lafiel not becoming pregnant during her growing phase. The damage could have been fatal to her or the child.” Reflecting on what he read he decided that he would do nothing till they arrived at the Hyde depot. Lafiel was going to be examined when she got their though and he would not take no for an answer.

*********
“Wham Bam Boom!” The office shook violently. The cup of coffee on the table hit the floor and the general alarm sounded. Pulling himself to his feet Samson opens a Comm link. “Paveryua! Paveryua! What the hell just happened? Paveryua answer me!” Static filled the Comm link then a familiar voice. “Whoa Samson sorry about that. Seems the OLE Basroil still has some fight left in her. That was supposed to be a ten-percent test fire of the new cannon. Looks like I wired the controls backwards and that was a one hundred percent blast. Thankfully it went into space. Kind of shook the base real good I think.” Samson silenced the alarm, opens a channel and announces to the depot that there was nothing to worry about. Then he returns to Paveryua. “You lame brain. I ought to, So it works good Eh?” Paveryua informs him that the blast was set at one hundred percent. But the reactor had only made it to eighty-percent power at the time of the test fire. “So if she was up to full power. Whoa! Paveryua, you really want to hand her a weapon with that kind of firepower?”

*********
Sitting in the lounge Spoor and Kufadis were getting ready to start on their walk. Suddenly the base shook and the lights dimmed followed by the general alarm, Kufadis rolls his creunoc to his lips, ”Lashkau. What just happened? Is the ship alright?” The answer came back instantly. “Commander Kufadis we are fine is the Admiral ok?” Kufadis informs them she was next to him and fine. “What was that? Felt like an explosion?” The answer surprised them both. “Commander it was a anti matter cannon discharge from the far side of the planet estimated to be at eighty-five percent power.” He looks at Spoor, she was speechless. “Can you tell what ship fired it?” The time for the answer to come seemed an eternity. “It came from an attack ship Roil class in low orbit over the depot. F.O.F. signal identifies it as the Basroil.” Spoor shakes her head. “Lashkau. Repeat the ships identity.” “Admiral, it is confirmed as the attack ship Basroil.” Kufadis acknowledges the transmission and closes the channel. Spoor looks at him. “What the hell is Samson up to now?” Kufadis shakes his head. They start their walk with a new destination, the fuel depot office.

*********
Gathering his thoughts and looking around him, Samson fails to hear the door open. Turning around he finds Kufadis and Spoor staring at him. Before he can speak Spoor starts. “You have some explaining to do. That was an anti-matter cannon blast from the Basroil. Why is that ship equipped with that destructive of a weapon?” Samson smiles. “It’s a gift for Her Highness. The first ship she commanded, a memento.” Spoor frowns. “Lair! If you’re under orders not to tell me then just say so. But don’t lie to me stationmaster it’s not very becoming and I’m not in a real good mood. So one more time why did you modify the Basroil?” Samson looks at her. “Admiral. Ask the Princess she will be here in two days. I’m not at liberty to divulge any more information at this time.” Spoors eyes narrow on Samson. “Very well stationmaster I’ll speak with Her Highness when she gets here.” She looks at Kufadis. “We need to finish the walk, come Kufadis.” Kufadis gives Samson a strange look and follows Spoor out of the room. Samson breathes a sigh of relief he knows the Count and the Princess will be in for a surprise when they arrive. But he did as he was instructed to and Spoor will just have to wait. He turns off the lights and leaves the room.

Sitting in the crew lounge Kenesh is reading the latest report on fleet movements. The sound of a chair being moved attracts her attention. “Mind if I join you?” Kenesh looks up. Nefee is standing before her. “Go ahead, after I was finished here I was coming to look for you. You’ve saved me the trip.” Nefee sits down facing Kenesh. “Fleet movements? Really exciting reading material Kenesh.” Kenesh finishes the report and looks at Nefee. ”Part of the job. You know that as well. Tell me something? What happen between you and Nereis? Why did you disown your own brother?”

Nefee sat back in the chair. “Kenesh you knew my brother well. You know the answer. We are both insane. He avoids admitting it. I on the other hand relish in it. I use it as the reason I do as I do. I’m tried of the war. I wish to stop it finally. If that means the half of the universe that opposes us needs to be destroyed. Then so be it. The cautious tiptoeing that you and Ramaj have done is moving us to a position of weakness. We should not negotiate with those weaker than the Empire. We should crush them. Turn their solar systems to dust. As proof of our overwhelming power.”

Nefee suddenly stands and leaves Kenesh. As he walks off Kenesh thinks about what he just said. “Ramaj, what the hell were you thinking? I dare not relieve Nastoyia of her command. If I put Nefee in charge he’d probably destroy most of the outer ring in his perceived pursuit of peace.” Dazed. She sat there. Her options had just been drastically reduced. It felt like Aptic all over again. Although this time, her side was at the great disadvantage.

*********
The room was dimly lit. His restraints loosen as promised. He laid there, his mind slowly unraveling before him. It had been two days since his last coherent conversation. He had asked then how soon death would come and there was no answer to his query. The DNA time bomb was about to explode. It would leave him a mental vegetable. This was not the agreement he had with the doctor, he thought. The sound of the door opening distracted him from his self-induced conversation.

Doctor Sasoum stood there, a hypo spray in her hand. “Are you ready for the great sleep?” He nods. She held the instrument to his neck. “Before I do this. There are a couple of thing I’d like you to know. First the child is dead, as we agreed. It’s strange her DNA is your DNA. But it’s an older strand. So the original of you was still alive when the girl was cloned. We found the Rebel base. It was where you told us.” He smiles. She gently pulls the trigger. He took one last deep breath and then he was gone. She folds his hands on his chest and covers him with a sheet. As she leaves the room, she turns off the lights.

*********
The wing of the ward was silent. She walks to her office. She enters the room, turns on a desk lamp and sits at her desk. She places the hypo spray on top of the desk. Then she buries her head in her hands and cries. She had never taken a life before and hopes never to have to do it again. She had kept her promise. But it would haunt her the rest of her life.

Two hours pass she finally felt she was able to complete what she had started. She opens a Com link and Ramaj answers. “Tell Kenesh it’s done. About two hours ago, I would like some time off if I could?” The answer took awhile to be spoken. “Do as you need to doctor. But do not leave the Capital. Your services will still be needed for the short term.” She acknowledges the statement and closes the channel. She turns off the desk lamp and reclines in her chair. His smile would not leave her mind it was just as clear as...

*********
Arriving at Admiral Kotoponi’s fleet. Kenesh receives the news of Dusanyu’s passing. She makes it to her cabin aboard the flagship just as she breaks down. The next several hours she spends hating herself for allowing the doctor to do it when she was not there. Admiral Kotoponi heads for Sord 577. Before Kenesh’s rendezvous with her fleet she had dispatched a communications shuttle to notify Admiral Nastoyia of Admiral Kenesh’s arrival. The news sets Nastoyia ablaze. She demanded from her communications officer an explanation of what was going on. The Decca Commander stuck to her story. “Admiral we’ve had no communications with the Capital.” Which she knew was a lie, it would not be long before the lie and liars were exposed. She sat there; her career had just been derailed. She figures the Chief of Staff could explain it better than she could. So she kept quite. It was a grave mistake on her part.

*********
Lafiel slept through the transition from the Sord into the Hyde system. Jinto had established communication with Lina in direct violation of the treaty. However when Jinto explained the two problems he had. Teel ignored the fact that Jinto requested communication. The log was altered to show the planet called him. “Lina, I appreciate the help you’ve given Lafiel on understanding religion. I’ll see she reads what you have transmitted. The herbal remedy for weak muscles do I rub it on her?”

Laughter fills the room. “No my darling. She drinks it. She not going to be very happy with you either, it’s quite bitter. The remedy should be given a little at first to see how she reacts to it. Then increase the dosage as stated in the instructions. In about ten days she should be fine. If you use it that is. Have your doctors check it. Since we all evolved from the same seed it should not do her any harm, but don’t give it to her till your doctors have tested it. I like her and would not like to see any harm come to her.”

Jinto thanks her and closes the channel. He opens the ingredient for the remedy. What he sees intrigues him. It’s a mixture of base vitamins in a concentrated solution of green tea. The fresh young leaves are still full of the potent ingredient tocotrienols and L-glutamine. The Abh have a genetic treatment. Lafiel’s condition prevented any genetic therapy. The old fashion remedy would have to do in this case.

Jinto’s creunoc was the next thing to announce their arrival to the depot. Samson calls and warns Jinto of Spoor’s visit. He also informs him of the completion of the Basroil. Jinto levels with him about Lafiel’s condition and orders him to secure the Basroil so she cannot operate it. “Samson she is madder than I’ve ever seen her, although she is not showing it outwardly. If she knew the ship was done and the firepower it had, she’d leave immediately to pursue the party or parties responsible for the message. She’d die clearing her name.” Samson responds that he’ll meet them at the dock and that the Basroil was already out of sight. “Spoor’s ship is complete. She’s got everything she always wanted. Kg for Kg she’s got more firepower in the Lashkau than twenty regular Kau class ships. Jinto. Spoor’s not fully recovered either. So go easy on her.”

Jinto acknowledges the transmission and looks around. Martine was off to the left of the ship and the depot was distant to the right. He was home, a home he could never step foot on. The tears streak his face. It was Risch’s voice that returns him to reality. “Jinto. The Captain wants to see you. It seems the minute we entered the Hyde System. Admiral Atosuryua has been hailing the Princess. She’s asleep and Atosuryua is not happy. The Captain wishes for you to speak with the Admiral.” Jinto turns to Risch his face became visible. Risch stares. “Something I said?” Jinto shook his head he explained the treaty with the Hyde system to Risch. “So you can never go to the surface?” Jinto nods his head. “That’s why the island is so precious to you and Lafiel.” Jinto puts his arm around Risch. “Yes. Right now though. I guess I’d better settle the Baroness down.” They proceed to the bridge.

*********
“I’m sorry Admiral. The Princess is asleep and left orders not to be awaken.” Ekuryua sat looking in the main viewer. Admiral Atosuryua sat staring back. They had been deadlocked for ten minutes. The door opens and Jinto walks onto the bridge. Atosuryua saw this and went to speak. Jinto raised his hand to silence her. “Admiral. Her Highness is sleeping. You have two choices, you talk to me now, or you wait till she awakens. This ship is operating under her orders and therefore is no longer your responsibility. Now. Baroness what shall it be? Talk to me or wait for Her Highness?” Atosuryua scowls she leans back in the chair. She hand raises, the link was broken, the display went blank.

Ekuryua turns towards Jinto. “How did you just do that? She caved in so fast. She did not put up an argument.” Jinto turns towards her. She finally saw his face, his look was stern, his eyes focused and the traces of tears still stained his cheeks. Jinto looks as if he would have handed anyone their head should they try to argue with him. It was a look Ekuryua had never seen before and wishes not to see in the future. “I’ll be in our quarters. Inform me when we have docked.” Jinto turns and leaves the bridge. Ekuryua and Risch watch as he leaves.

*********
“That was pretty scary! He was as mad as Her Highness gets. Only he did not lash out like she does. Controlled anger. Is that what that was?” Risch shook his head. ”I’d say he’s been pushed to his limit and that was his outburst.” He proceeds to explain the treaty to Ekuryua and the condition he found Jinto in. “He’s had enough nonsense. I truly believe he would be happy to take her back to that planet and live the rest of their lives out there in peace. But the Empire has other plans for them. They will probably shape our futures, bring about a lasting peace and a new age of co-operation.”

He steps closer to her and whispers. ”We could be watching history being made right here and now. Think about it. She’s more powerful than an Empress is. She can shape and make policy almost at will. She is the Empire at this moment.” Ekuryua sat back in her chair a thought hit her. “Risch is that why all of this has transpired, to discredit her? To make her an outcast, then it truly is a trap. Anyway to take her out of the picture to put the Empire in chaos. We need to tell them.” Risch agrees. They would tell them of their suspicions when they arrive at the depot.

*********
“Commander Kufadis. The Attack Frigate has cleared Planet Martine. Should I inform Admiral Spoor of its arrival?” Kufadis looks at the communications officer. “No. You’ll tell the Admiral nothing. Time to the depot? The officer glances at the display. “About thirty minutes sir.” Kufadis searches the bridge; the first officer was in the fire control station he walks over to him. “You have the watch. I’ll be with the Admiral. Nobody boards this ship, not until you hear from me. You do understand me don’t you?” The first officer looks him in the face. “Understood sir, no one gains access to the Lashkau without your direct orders. Would that also include the Admiral as well?” Kufadis smiles “It’s her ship. You can’t keep her off it. You need not worry. The Admiral will be with me at all times. No other visitors.” The first officer nods and then Kufadis depart the bridge. Going down the gangway he recalls the data crystal in the safe. “Guess she ought to see that before she sees them. I’m sure Count Hyde will question the Admiral about it.” He stops and returns to the ship removing the crystal from the safe he puts around his neck and leaves the ship once more. He knows a place where she can view it in private that has few breakables in it.

“Admiral will you follow me?” Kufadis takes Admiral Spoor to a surgical conference room locks the door and shows her the crystal. “Count Hyde sent it to you twenty-two days ago.” Spoor scowls at him. “I was waiting for your condition to improve before you saw it.” He loads the crystal into the reader then enters the decryption code. Spoor views it several times. Finally when she stops the viewer a look of anger and concern comes to her face. She stood up and faces Kufadis. She made a solid eye contact. Kufadis braced himself for the onslaught that was about to be unleashed. She took a deep breath and smiles. Placing her hands on her hips she addresses him.

“Kufadis you do understand what we just saw? He nods. “You had the nerve to keep it from me?” Kufadis holds fast, he had expected she’d be angry about this delay. ”Admiral when I got this. You could not walk you were under extensive pain management. Would you have understood what you just saw, then?” Spoor turns towards him her, hair whisks around her hips. “You have a point Chief of Staff. You should have come to me with this sooner though.”

He stops her there. “What would you have done Painiach? Hobbled to a yet completed Lashkau. Gone where and done what? Except make a damn fool out of yourself.” They were locked in eye contact and neither of them was prepared to blink. “I agree I should have shown it to you sooner. So what do you want to do about it?”

Spoor steps back she close her eyes and spoke. “Right now, nothing. Nothing till I speak with Count Hyde and the Princess. He sent me that to me for a reason. I’d like to hear his reason before I do anything else.” She opens her eyes they were surprisingly calm. “I’m hungry Kufadis. Let’s go find something eat and wait till they arrive.” She extends her hand towards him. He removes the crystal from the reader and puts it around his neck. Taking her hand they leave the conference room and head for the cafeteria.

Passing the event horizon of Sord 577. Admiral Kotoponi’s flagship was hailed. It was Admiral Nastoyia calling. Kenesh’s face appears on the viewer. “So you’re finally taking my calls now that I’m here!” Admiral Nastoyia stood looking at her is disbelief. Before she could speak a log window opens showing the calls to Nastoyia from the Capital and how they were answered or rejected. “You’ve got some explaining to do Nastoyia. This time to my face, not only do you have a communications problem, but I’d like an answer for this as well.” The log disappears and the video of the EM shot plays. Nastoyia’s face grows expressionless. “We will dock in ten minutes. I’ll expect answers then. Kenesh out!”

Nastoyia falls back into the center seat. The communications officer is pale and silent as well. Opening a Com link she goes looking for her Chief of Staff. There is no answer. Looking at the communications office, Nastoyia speaks. “Where is she?” The officer pales. “She took a shuttle and headed for the transports about an hour ago.” Nastoyia glares at her. “Find her! Bring the fleet to alert, find and confine her. You have some explaining to do, as well Decca Commander.” The communications officer sends the alert out and collapses in her chair. She realizes that she is going to take the fall for this and there is little proof of the Kilo Commanders involvement.

“Kenesh will you look at this?” Admiral Kotoponi points to the message being transmitted by Nastoyia’s flagship.” She’s tearing her fleet apart looking for her Chief of Staff. Wasn’t that the woman who cold shouldered you while you were trying to contact Nastoyia?” Kenesh read the message. “We are more dispersed than Nastoyia is. Tell her we will scan the system. Have her ships hold their positions. We don’t need us bumping into to each other. The scouting fleet scans the system it does not take long to find an abandon shuttle. Location of the shuttle was on the far side of the sixth moon of the third planet in the system. It was a short run from there to the entrance of the Sord.

Kotoponi’s ship docks with Nastoyia’s ship. Kenesh and Nefee go aboard. They are greeted by the acting Chief of Staff a pleasantly happy woman. She leads them to a conference room. Admiral Nastoyia and the communications officer are waiting for them. “We found your shuttle. It was abandoned. The scouting fleet is sweeping the area looking for evidence of where the Kilo Commander went. I’m guessing by the look on your face. You have no idea of what is happening around here. Do you?” Nastoyia sat stone faced and solemn. She looks over to the Decca Commander. “Tell her everything now!”

The communications officer opened up and proceeds to tell Kenesh and Nefee of the communications the Kilo Commander had her send or alter and ignore. When she got to the message they sent to Lafiel. Kenesh stops her. ”You sent the message knowing it could have been a trap? Why?” The communications officer explained that there was a group of officers that felt the royal family was bungling the war. To that end they had banded together to oppose the ruling family. She said that they would hold the Princess hostage and have her to negotiate a withdrawal of forces from the outer ring. That was all they wished for. “Do you know where this location is?” The communications officer supplies the information.

It was Nefee who spoke. “Oh my! That’s the location of the Rebel base.” Kenesh agrees. “Do you know if the Princess is headed there now? The communications office shook her head. “According to plan the Princess should be there by now. You can’t save her. It’s too late.” Then she looks at Kenesh. “What did you mean by the Rebel base?” Kenesh proceeds to show her the data from the scouting fleet. “You just handed Her Highness over to the enemy. Was that your wish?” The Decca Commander pales, it finally hits her. The Kilo Commander was working for the Rebel’s, not the resistance. “Nastoyia you need to do a through house cleaning before you leave this system if she is among your crew there are more. I’ll leave Nefee and his command staff with you.” She looks to Nefee. “You’re her second in command. Help her go through the fleet and weed out any other members of the resistance. Let me know when your ready to do battle. I’ll trust you’ll remember our other conversation?” Nefee smiles. “I’ll not disappoint you Admiral. You can be sure if that.”

She turns to Admiral Nastoyia. “Did you fire on Admiral Trife?” Nastoyia looks Kenesh in the face. “I might despise that man, but to kill others just to get to him. I think you know me better than that Kenesh. You’re headed back to the Capital then?” Kenesh looks at her. “To the nearest communications hub. I need to know where the Princess is. You will not move from this spot till I order you to. The scouting fleet will be here in three days. There is still a big hole in our defenses and you’re not ready to fight Admiral.”

Nastoyia steps back the Decca Commander comes into view. ”What do I do with her?” Kenesh looks towards the Decca Commander. “She’s coming with me. She has information I can use.” She sat down and faces the Decca Commander. “You are in a lot of trouble. You can help yourself, by helping me ascertain where the Kilo Commander went and to help me locate the Princess. Or you can be placed in the brig on this ship and take the full measure of your crimes. It’s up to you. I need your answer this minute.” She nods accepting to help Kenesh in any way possible.

“Nefee be thorough, but don’t waste time. Hopefully you can be ready to leave in two weeks or less. If we lose the Rebels, then we lose them. But if this fleet were to mutiny in the midst of battle we would lose much more. You’re up to job, then do it well. The future of the Empire might well rest on what you do here.” Kenesh and the Decca Commander leave the room and head back to Kotoponi’s flagship.

Nefee and Nastoyia watch as they leave. “Admiral I know of your feelings for Abh males. Can you put those feelings aside and work with me? It would go a lot faster if you do.” She smiles at him. “Since you’re not a typical Abh male. I can overlook my feelings for the a typical male. She was going to arrest me and put you in charge wasn’t she?” Nefee nods. “What changed her mind?” Nastoyia asks. “Admiral. I changed Kenesh’s mind. If you will work with me, then I need not say more.” Nastoyia spun on her heels and heads towards the lift. “We have work to do Admiral, time is a wasting.” Nefee follows her.

*********
“Given what you’ve told me Jinto. I’d say she is malnourished. Send me the contents of meal she has eaten since you left. I’ve reviewed the remedy that Lina sent you. Try some of that as soon as the test results are in. Calling me was a wise move. I can send her records to the depot. They have an excellent facility there. Anything else Jinto?” Jinto sat looking at the display. “No nothing right now Doctor Sasoum. Thanks for everything.” Jinto closes the channel. The display went dark.

They had arrived two hours earlier Lafiel was still sleeping. Samson and Seelnay were rounding up quarters on the depot for them. Then Seelnay was heading for Martine on a mission, she would only label as most urgent. Jinto was finally exhausted; the past four days had left him mentally and physically drained. Worrying about Lafiel’s condition, the message and having to deal with the space he was in had almost proved too much for him. A hand rested on his shoulder he turns to find Risch standing behind him. “Looks like you could use a friend to talk to Jinto.” It was true. Lafiel had always been the one he could confide in discuss things with and share opinions. She was now sleeping, more than she was awake, and had not been good conversationalist since they left Vorash. “Yeah I guess I could get some of this off my chest, you willing to listen?”

Risch slid out the chair across from Jinto and sat down facing him. “Fire away! I’m all ears.” Jinto starts to discuss everything that was on his mind. Most of it Risch had heard before so he listened. When Jinto finishes Risch interjects something Jinto had never thought of. “Do you realize how much influence the two of you have? Especially Lafiel?” He continued to share the conversations he and Noel had been having. Jinto became aware of a new reality as Risch spoke. “Jinto you ever feel you’re sitting on the jade throne. Noel and I feel that you and Lafiel have more power between you than the person who would sit on that throne does. Maybe she does not hold the title of Empress but her actions and yours qualify the two of you to be rulers of the Empire.”

Jinto shook his head. He orders a drink from the venderbot. Risch took one as well. “Risch let me get this straight. You feel that Lafiel and I are running the Empire by proxy?” Risch sips his drink. “How else would you explain everything that has happened? Why only we received that message? Why would someone want to discredit Lafiel like that? You realize they went to a lot of trouble to fabricate that information. They also had faulty knowledge. They were under the impression that; One, Lafiel was well. Two, She and Noel were at each other’s throats and Three Lafiel would take command of the Attack Frigate and go storming off to the location given in the message. I’m sure somebody at those coordinates is very upset that the ship is not there by now."

Jinto orders another drink. “I understand what you are saying. I’d never realized it, but you are right. After the exposure of Dusanyu’s clone, Lafiel would have been at the head of the line to ascend to the throne. She’s never wished that to happen, she’s always wanted her brother to become Emperor. This changes things doesn’t it?” Risch nods. “If Lafiel gets killed or captured the clans of the Imperial family would probably go into chaos. Jinto you see I’m a commoner from a lower ranked family. If someone had told me I’d be in the company of and friends with the two most powerful people in the Empire. I’d laughed them off. So here I sit thanks to the Star Forces, one very cunning Captain and the luck of the draw getting trapped with her in an escape pod.”

Jinto’s eyebrows rose. “You too Eh?” Risch smiles and he continues. “You see this all makes sense to me because I’m not directly involved. Noel ranks higher than I do, but she also sees the picture as I do. You and Lafiel have become so swept up in things that the big picture is too big. Where all Noel and I can see is the big picture. You understand me?”

Jinto sat back. He took the drink in his hand and slowly moves the glass. The liquid rolls around the glass almost spilling out. “Sort of like this glass. From the outside you can see what’s about to happen. But from the inside it’s hard to tell what will happen next. Only thing you know for sure is that the liquid is moving and you’re going along for the ride.”

At that moment Jinto twitches his hand a bit of liquid spills over the top and lands on the table. “See you and I are on the outside we saw that coming had we been on the inside we would probably be there.” He points to the spill on the table. “Yes Risch. I do understand and you’re right. I’ve become swept up in the fluid and if I’m not careful Lafiel and I will wind up spilled on the table.” He looks at Risch. “I need to wake her up so they can run test on her. Then I need to talk with Admiral Spoor. Guess I should get going?” Risch nods, he and Jinto stand up and go their separate ways.

Its very simple, Lafiel you shall say.
In return I'd like to call you Jinto."

“Admiral Kenesh?” Kenesh raised her creunoc to her lips. “Go ahead.” “Just to let you know. We found the Princess and Count Hyde. They are at the Hyde fuel depot, should we notify them?” Kenesh muses. “How long till we can be at the Hyde fuel depot?” “Since we are headed the wrong direction Admiral. We can short cut an unused Sord and be there in six days.” She smiles. “Request that they not leave till we get there and wait for an answer before you short cut!” She ends the transmission and opens the door. Before her sitting at a table was the Communications officer from Nastoyia’s flagship. Kenesh closed the door behind her and sat a recording device in front of them. “Tell me everything you can remember Decca Commander. No matter how small of a detail it is. The more I know. The less your punishment will be, and do be accurate Decca Commander.” The Decca Commander starts at the beginning. When she recruited by the Chief of Staff. From there the details flow freely.

“Lafiel. Hey Lafiel! Come on. Wake up sleepy head.” Jinto try, as he might, could not get Lafiel awake. She would open her eyes, smile, kiss Jinto and drift off to sleep again. After several attempts he was left with little choice. Making sure she was dressed. He brought a hover gurney into the room. He rolled her from the bed to the gurney. Covering her up he pushed her to the docking port. Risch opens the airlock to the depot and Jinto slid her and himself to the depot. On the other end of the tube the medical staff was waiting. They did not handle Lafiel as gently as Jinto had. On their way to the exam room on a standard gurney Lafiel awoke. “Where am I? Why am I strapped down? Jinto!” He was along side her he took her hand. “You would not wake up and Dr Sasoum wants some test run so I brought you here. You’re strapped down so you won’t wind up on the floor, Dear.” Lafiel was not amused she looks down the gurney. “Jinto? Am I dressed? I know how I went to bed. I’d better not be that way under here.” Jinto assures her she was dressed. Lafiel relaxed after that assurance and the staff just smiled.

One complete set of body scans and several fluid samples later, they were done. Lafiel seemed neither rested nor exhausted. She existed that was something Jinto was going to put an end to while they were here. “Hungry Lafiel?” She said she was not. She asks if they could go back to the ship. Jinto almost most gave in to her request then he asks her. “I was heading over to see Admiral Spoor. Would you like to go?” She agrees. “As long as we don’t spend all day there I would like to get some more rest.” Jinto agrees and the head for Spoors room. Kufadis met them in the hall. ”It’s been awhile, Princess, Count Hyde. The Admiral is still in physical therapy would you like to wait? They said yes.

Kufadis shows them to a small waiting area. There was a sofa and two chairs. Kufadis took a chair and Jinto and Lafiel took the sofa. It did not take long for Lafiel to drift off. She had positioned herself against Jinto and dosed off. Kufadis looks at Jinto. His face was not as he last remembered it was very serious. “Is she Okay?” Kufadis asks. Jinto looks to the sleeping Princess on his shoulder. “Don’t know. The test results are not complete.” Kufadis repositions him self in the chair. “So how long has she been like this?” Jinto shrugs. “About a week like this. It’s been going on for sometime now. It started when she started growing again.” Kufadis looks at Lafiel again. That’s what was different. She’s taller than before. “Growing at her age. It takes a lot out of a person. But I’ve never seen someone so, ah, pale before.” Jinto stares at Kufadis, and then he looks at Lafiel. Kufadis was right, in this light Lafiel looks very pale, almost pasty. Jinto returns his look to Kufadis. “You got something you want to say or ask don’t you?”

Kufadis nods. “She looks how Admiral Spoor looked when she got here. They said she was anemic that her red blood cell count was low and she was not absorbing enough oxygen to survive on. Of course later her sleeping problem came from pain management problems, but by then she had a healthy color. The Princess does not look healthy at all.” Jinto went to speak but before he could another voice was heard. “Good observation Kufadis. I’ve seen the dead look better than she does.” With a bit of a hitch in her step Admiral Spoor approaches them. “Kufadis. That tread mill does not like me!” She sat next to Lafiel. “Hey sleep head. Wake up. You came here to see me. Well I’m here.” Lafiel’s eyes open a smile comes over her face. ”Hi Painiach. You look great. I’ll talk to you more after I finish this nap.” Lafiel’s eyes close and she drifts off again. Spoor grabs her hands they are cold to the touch.

“Count Hyde how long has she been like this?” Jinto replies about a week. “I see. Have they ran tests on her yet?” Jinto nods. “Yeah a lot of them. I was hoping for an answer soon.” Spoor shifts Lafiel’s weight to her side. “You two go track down that doctor and get some answers. I’ll stay here with her.” Stunned they both look at her. “Don’t just stand their get a move on!” she commanded.

*********
With that they left Spoor, with Lafiel nuzzled into her side. Jinto says to Kufadis. “Something happened to the Admiral a concussion or something, because she’s not the Spoor I remember.” Kufadis smiles. “No Count Hyde. If you anger her, you’ll find your beloved Admiral is still there. Now that she’s fallen in love. She is being more open to those she really cares about.” Jinto kept walking. “So who’s the lucky guy?” Kufadis just smiled. Jinto saw the smile and comments. “Well you’ll have to tell me all about it sometime.” Kufadis keeps on walking and smiling. It was good he was able to tell Count Hyde of his new love, although not many words were spoken.

Entering the testing wing. Jinto found the doctor who had run the tests on Lafiel. “Do you have the results?” The doctor looks at him. She was confused for a moment. “Oh you’re Her Highnesses companion. Yes the results. I’ve sent a copy off to Dr Sasoum too. She’s suffering from a lack of red blood cells. Most of her base element levels are very low. She’s a bit dehydrated. Normally we treat this condition with a genetic therapy. But her weaken condition prevents that. I’m waiting for Dr Sasoum’s recommendation. But I feel that boosting the levels of basic vitamins and minerals should help. However all we have is synthetic medications here. She should have natural vitamins and minerals.”

“That planet we are orbiting would be a good place to start. Take her there for a week or so and let her eat natural foods exercise and get natural sun.” Jinto grimaced. The doctor was referring to the planet Martine. “That’s not possible. I can not go to the planet.” The doctor looks at him. “So you’re Count Hyde. I am so sorry. I did not know.” She thought. “Can we get shipments from the planet? Do we have a trade agreement with them?” Jinto assured her that trade was possible. It was going to the planet that was not possible. “I’ll give you a list of the foods she will need. We can start her with some synthetic compounds. Hopefully in ten days. She’ll be herself again.”

Jinto asks. “Would a blood transfusion help her? The doctor’s reply was instantaneous. “No! The Abh do not keep whole blood products. Fluids and plasma all universal, normally an Abh can product sufficient amounts of blood products they just need fluid replacements.” Looking at Lafiel’s chart she spoke again. “Royal family members are a rare blood type. There is only one person on base whose blood type is close enough to try. But that would have to be a dire emergency.”

Jinto looks at her; “The person, who is it?” She clears her throat. “Admiral Atosuryua. The Baroness blood type is Rh correct. But it’s not one hundred percent compatible. Her Highness would have to be near death before I would even think about combining their blood types. “OH! Something else, your remedy, if it was made with natural ingredients that would help her too.”

She motions to Jinto. He follows her. She picks up a hypo spray. “You know how to use one of these?” Jinto nods his head. She pulls a vile out of the cabinet and loads the unit. “One injection in each extremity every four hours. Left forearm, right forearm, left calf, right calf. Start the treatment, repeat the same patterns till the vile is empty. You should have twelve shots in the vile. It will gently stimulate her marrow to produce red blood cells. I’ll want to test her again in twenty-four hours. The most important thing is for you to start feeding her the foods on this list and use your remedy. Real foods. Nothing out of machines or the cafeteria, you do understand me?”

Jinto said he did. As he left he met up with Kufadis who was waiting in the outer room. “So how is she?” Jinto held up the hypo spray. “You’re going to use that on her? I hope she’s a good patient. The Admiral was not.” Jinto put the hypo back in his pocket. “There is one problem, I need to get these supplies.” He hands Kufadis the list. He looks and the list and chuckles. “Wow this is a coincidence. Seelnay should be on her way back from Martine with everything on this list. It looks like the Admiral and Her Highness are on the same diet.”

Jinto shook his head. He was told once if he let things take a natural course. Then everything would work out. Those words did not make sense till just recently. Things were progressing nicely by themselves. “So when does Seelnay return?” Kufadis looks at his creunoc. “Actually, she is running a little late. She’s not left the planet. Don’t worry. She gets involved in things on the surface. She loses track of time. But she always catches herself. She be back soon.” They approach Lafiel and Spoor. Lafiel is now lying on Spoors lap and Spoor is snoozing.

*********
Jinto raises Lafiel off of Spoor and Kufadis helps Spoor to her feet. Lying Lafiel down on the sofa he pushes her sleeve up her left arm and applies the hypo spray. “Ouch, what was that? Who did that?” Lafiel opens her eyes; Jinto was still holding the hypo in his hand. “So you did that? You want to explain what and why before I slug you?” Jinto proceeds to explain what the doctor had told him. “Anemic? I’m anemic! That’s just wonderful! Curse being a member of the royal family, there will be no transfusions. So it’s injections. Where and how often Jinto?” he explains the routine. “So one more arm and both calves. Then in another four hours, repeat. Then four more hours and repeat again?” Jinto nods.

“Give me that!” She takes the hypo from Jinto’s hand. She rolls up her right sleeve and injects herself. Spying the bathroom she excuses herself. She emerges from the bathroom rubbing both calves. She hands the hypo back to Jinto. “Done. I’m hungry! Where’s the food?” As if cued Seelnay contacts Kufadis. “Commander. I’m back I’ll meet you at the normal place.” Kufadis acknowledges the transmission. “You will follow me. Dinner is about to be served.”

*********
They follow him to a small kitchen in the fuel depot. Seelnay was putting the food into storage and getting ready to prepare the meal. She turns and sees there would be four for dinner. “Your Highness, you are here. I’ve got something for you. There was a new lady at the produce stand. We talked too long and I was late. She gave me this bottle to give to you. She said she was Count Hyde’s mother and the Emperor’s wife? I did not realize Martine had an Emperor.” Jinto took the bottle from Seelnay and softly laughs. He explains to her who she was and that Martine did not have an Emperor. The liter bottle had a hand written label on it. He recognized the writing as Lina’s. It was the instructions for its use and a note at the bottom. “Jinto I am able to make this because of what you and Lafiel did all those years ago. It is my fondest hope this brings her back to the health that I now have. Thanks to you both. Love Lina.”

Lafiel looks at the bottle her Martine was not that good but the label was quite simply written. “So I’m suppose to drink this? What’s in it?” Jinto refers her to his creunoc the message from Lina was still stored on it. Lafiel read the ingredient the last line stops her. “Argh! Green tea! I don’t like green tea. Maybe the rest will mask the flavor.” She hands Jinto the bottle and sits next to Spoor. “I’d like to share something with you Admiral.” She turns her creunoc towards Spoor the message she received at Vorash is displayed. Spoor reads it with great interest. “It’s a trap you know.” Lafiel smiles. “Yes I know, but as soon as I’m well I’m going. Nobody smears my name and gets away with it. You’re coming too aren’t you Admiral?”

Kufadis looks at them he’s seen this kind of maneuvering before. “You two will have to get well at the same time.” Spoor glances at Kufadis then she turns back to Lafiel. “He’s right. I’ve worked too hard to take off on a venture like this. But if we can wait ten days I should be ready by then.” Kufadis puts his head in his hands. Jinto pats his shoulder. “Your right. She’s not changed a bit, keeping those two here long enough to get them healthy will be a challenge. You up to it?” Kufadis removes his head and smiles. “You and I keep those two from ripping whoever to pieces? This ought to be interesting.” Spoor looks at Jinto “That reminds me Count Hyde you sent me a message too. Do you think the two might be connected?” Jinto was confused, Spoor continues. “That shot was not directed at Admiral Trife’s flagship. The Lashkau was it intended target all the time. Somebody wants me dead. Is there a portable terminal around here Seelnay?”

Seelnay left the room and returns with the terminal. Spoor powers it up. “Kufadis give it to me if you please.” He removes the data crystal from around his neck. Spoor insert it into the terminal and enters the decryption code.” She starts the play back, lets it go till the shot was approaching Trife’s vessel. She paused the playback. “Now watch carefully.” She advanced the playback frame by frame. “Freeze frame. Look at the shot. It is not blinking, it’s not armed.” She then starts the playback again frame by frame the shot glances off Trife’s shields and heads for Spoor’s ship. “Freeze frame and magnify.” The image grows larger. “You see it’s still not blinking. Its still not armed. Forward point five seconds and freeze.” The image comes into view. The shot glows bright blue. It was being armed at that split second. “End.” The display goes dark. “When that shot deflected off Trife’s shields it should have detonated. It did not. That’s why I viewed it so many times. Trife was never the target. The shot was directed to make it look like he was, but the Lashkau was the only target. Your Highness we find the ones responsible for that shot and I’ll bet we find the ones who sent the message.” Lafiel nods her head.

“Dinner is ready.” Seelnay took the pause in the discussion to make the announcement. “I’m hungry let’s finish this discussion after dinner?” Lafiel agrees with Spoors statement. Seelnay present the meal. It was a red meat dish in a butter sauce with fresh vegetables, a side salad and water. At first Lafiel turns her nose up to the meal. Then she reconsiders. “If this is going to make me feel better, then I’m going for it.” Jinto let a small sigh go. He figured it would be a fight to get Lafiel to eat healthy. Lafiel ate a couple of helpings of everything. She enjoyed the meat and her body could use the protein. The time came to try Lina’s remedy. Jinto opened the bottle and poured the recommended amount into a glass. Passing his nose over the bottle he commented. “It does not smell that bad.”

Everybody sat watching Lafiel. She raised the glass to her lips and drank. Her face told the story. At first it was bitter, then it became more neutral as she drank it. She finished the glass in one gulp. Setting it on the table, she commented. “It’s not bad after you get past the first bit of it.” She reads the bottle. “Four times a day. At meals and bedtime. Then I have two more sets of injections to do. Some exercise, rest and I’ll be better than new. Right?” Jinto looks at her he realized this was the longest she has stayed awake since they left Vorash. “Everything in moderation Lafiel. You don’t want to over do it and lose ground.” Spoor, Kufadis and Seelnay were nodding in agreement with Jinto’s statement. “Fine, then where is the exercise room. I want to try some walking. I feel fat.” Jinto looks at her, “You’re not fat Lafiel. Full, maybe, but not fat.” Seelnay clears the table and the rest of them head for the gym.

*********
Two treadmills stood side by side. After changing into body suits. Lafiel took one and Spoor watched for a moment then joined her on the other one. “Admiral. Remember your promise. This will be your forth session today.” Spoor nods. “A light jog for me, what ever the Princess feels like doing I won’t try to keep up.” Kufadis smiles and Jinto says. “Lafiel start slow okay? You might be feeling better but.” She stops him. “I understand Jinto, a brisk walk and I’ll be done.” She programs the machine and it starts. Spoor was already at a light jog. Lafiel took a moment to get the feel. Jinto thought she was going to fall on her face.

Soon Lafiel was briskly walking along. Spoor started her cool down and Lafiel was starting to show signs of tiring. Her face became pained, that’s when Jinto hit the cool down button. The treadmill slows and Lafiel staggers off of it and into his arms. “I over did it Jinto. I’m sorry. I felt so good when I started. Now I’m beat.” He helps her over to the hot tub Spoor had already entered the tub and was relaxing. Kufadis was sitting outside the tub next to her going over how she felt. Jinto slipped Lafiel into the tub. She was ready to fall asleep. The warmth of the tub made it easy for her to dose off. He noticed the injection sites were a little inflamed. He touches one. “Does that hurt Lafiel?” She answered no. She completely relaxed in the tub. “Jinto, funny thing is. I’m tried but I’m not sleepy. If I were to rest here, I believe in a hour or so I could go on the treadmill again.”

Jinto wonders if this is a sign things were improving, or the false indication of recently receiving the medicine. It was coming up on the next injection. Jinto removes her from the tub. He hands Lafiel the hypo she injects herself. Then she changes back into her clothes and the four of them part company for the evening. She and Jinto found Seelnay who showed them to their quarters on the depot. Lafiel settled in for the night. Then Jinto called Ekuryua and briefed her on their progress. “She was anemic? Well that explains a lot. But how did she get that way? It’s normally from either blood loss or old age. Which neither has happened to her.” Jinto figures it was her growing and keeping the non-stop schedule that they did. It finally wore her out. “She’s lucky. Abh’s don’t catch the common cold. In her weakened state a simple cold could have killed her.” Ekuryua smiles at that statement. “I don’t think there’s a germ around that could stop her. Jinto have you got some free time? Now? There are some matters I’d like to discuss with you but not on an open channel.” Jinto said Lafiel was sleeping and he could meet her at the ship in about ten minutes. She said that would be fine. He ends the communication leaves Lafiel a note and heads for the ship.

*********
“Admiral Kenesh, message received from Commander Ekuryua. She says she will make sure that the Princess stays at the Hyde depot until you arrive.” Kenesh lies floating in her quarters. “Use the short cut and proceed to the Hyde System.” She opens a channel to Admiral Kotoponi. “I have a favor to ask of you Kotoponi.” Admiral Kotoponi smiles. “How many times have I asked for a favor from you and you’ve always filled my request Kenesh? What do you wish old friend?” Kenesh smiles. “Watch over Nastoyia’s fleet. Should anything go wrong, you will contact me. I’m sure Nastoyia and Nefee will not get along. But as long as there is not open warfare between them.” Laughter fills Kenesh’s quarters. “My dear Kenesh. You want me to baby-sit those two for you? I’d be honored to. Now get to the Hyde System. Sit on the Princess and keep her from harm. Your task is much more daunting than mine. We will be fine. I wish you luck, you’re going to need it.” Admiral Kotoponi closes the channel.

*********
The United Mankind had opened or moved hundreds of Sords throughout the course of the war. Most were dead ends. Some like the one Kenesh’s shuttle was about to use were short cuts. They transcended the normal structure of the common use Sords. However their usefulness was always in question. They were narrow paths. Not suitable for movements of large numbers of ships. But in the case of getting from one side of the Empire to another in a shuttle, they proved quite useful. The course was set, in less than six days Kenesh would be at the Hyde fuel depot. A trip that would have taken two weeks had they reversed course and gone back the way they came.

*********
Jinto arrives at the ship and is escorted to the wardroom by Ekuryua’s quarters. Entering the wardroom he sees two people. Ekuryua was facing him and the other person he recognized immediately. “Commander it’s been a long time.” She turns to face him. “Ambassador Lynn or should I say Wing Flyer Lynn.” He steps forward and gives her a big hug. “Sobbash, it’s good to see you again. What brings you here?” Sobbash motions them to sit down. “I’m here to fill in as many blanks as I can. Ekuryua has shared with me all the information that you have. With what I know I can tell you the following facts. Admiral Kenesh went out to relieve Admiral Nastoyia of her command. What Kenesh found when she investigated is Nastoyia’s Chief of Staff is a traitor and she has fled to parts unknown? The Rebel base is located at the coordinates given to you in the treason message.”

Sobbash pauses, she faces Jinto. “It was trap. Somebody wants Lafiel out of the way. Atosuryua is in the dark about all of this. How much does Admiral Spoor know?” Jinto responds. “She knows everything. In fact she has figured out that the EM shot’s target was always the Lashkau. Can I share what we are discussing with her?”

Sobbash put her chin in her hand and ponders Jinto’s words. Her decision does not require much thought. “Jinto we are going to need all the help we can get. I’ll let you know it’s no secret what Samson has done to the Lashkau and to the Basroil. With their combined firepower and the ships we have here we have just became a formidable force. We just lack experienced field commanders. Neither Spoor nor Her Highness is well enough to command at this time. Jinto, look at this.”

A display comes to life and the fleet deployment is shown. Several gaping holes are shown between the Rebel base and the Capital. “Ramaj has assigned Debeusec to command Admiral Bebaus’s fleet and ordered it to be moved here. Admiral Trife’s fleet, well, what’s left of it is here. Admiral Kotoponi’s scouting fleet is attached to Admiral Nastoyia’s fleet, until her scouting fleet returns in another three days. Then Admiral Kotoponi should join up with Admiral Trife’s fleet here. That leaves the training fleet here, Debeusec’s fleet here, Nastoyia and Trife here and here. The last hole is the Sord that leads from the Hyde system to the Capital via Vorash.” Jinto studies the display and Sobbash continues.

“Before you arrived here. Ekuryua informed me that Admiral Kenesh was on her way here and would arrive in six days. For now, Jinto, we wait till Admiral Kenesh arrives. I plan on giving her the same briefing I just gave you. I think we can fill the hole.” Jinto looks at the display. “Are you suggesting that Lafiel takes command of the Basroil and goes into combat?” Sobbash glares at him. “If the need arises and we are called upon to defend the Capital you think she’s going to sit on her butt at this depot? Holding a laser pistol to her head would not stop her. Face it Jinto, she’s a warrior like all of us are. We did not start this war. But we will finish it and to that end. We will all gladly give our lives for our ideals. Yes Jinto, she’ll go into combat if called upon.”

Sobbash sat studying Jinto’s face. A myriad of emotions were coursing through his brain. He was happy when they were order to stay away from the Star Forces even happier when they were named Ambassadors. He thought that she would never see combat again. He would not have to worry about losing her in battle. Now this challenge a new threat and no where to run or hide. Jinto smiles. This was to be his ordeal. He chose to be with her knowing that she was a Princess of the Empire. He knew someday it would all end up like this. Convinced of what he needs to do Jinto says. “First thing is to see what Kenesh’s says. In the meantime, I’ll work with Lafiel to get her back on her feet. There is little more I can do.” He got up and left the room.

Sobbash was stunned. Ekuryua sat there. It was Sobbash who spoke first. “Did he just give in? He’s not going to argue about it?” Ekuryua faces at her. “Before I answer you. I need a favor.” Sobbash asks. “What is it?” Ekuryua spoke. “I need you to put aside our ranks. I want to be frank. But as me to you, not as Kilo Commander to Decca Commander.” Sobbash agrees.

“Sobbash. You’re an insensitive ass! You’ve never been in love have you? Oh don’t get me wrong. Your logic was infallible. You were just as emotional and caring as that chair you’re sitting on. Do you have any idea of what those two have been through? They are bonded deeper than any two people I’ve ever seen are. In fact it makes me jealous at times. So you just waltz in here and possibly condemn her to death giving no thought to how he might feel. Well sure he gave in. You never tried to understand his point of view. You just recited the oath we took when we joined the Star Forces. My dear friend and commanding officer you are indeed an ASS!” Ekuryua gets up. She leaves Sobbash stunned sitting at the wardroom table.

Walking down the corridor she bumps into Risch. She wraps her arms around him. “Hold me! I’ve been an idiot! I just scuttled my career and I don’t care.” Pulling her into a little used corridor, he gets her to explain her statement. By the time she finishes her explanation she is crying freely his uniform is soaked at the shoulder. Stepping back and wiping the tears from her eyes he addressed her. “Sounds like Sobbash got what was coming to her. I don’t think you were an idiot for expressing your opinion. You would have been an idiot if you kept your mouth shut. That’s for sure.” She hugs him and thanks him. “Guess I’d better go and find her. We still have a lot to talk about.” She heads back to the wardroom. Risch turns to his creunoc. “I need count Hyde’s location.” The display flashes and Risch heads for the Engineering department.

*********
Jinto stood there looking at the reactor unit. It’s constant pulsation and rainbow of colors emitted had a calming effect on him. Organized chaos he thought. That would also best describe the way he felt at the moment. “Hey Jinto standing in one place too long down here without protective clothing is not a good idea.” Risch motions him out of the containment room. Its clear wall reduced but did not eliminate the radiation emitted by the reactor. “The running joke is, if you don’t want children. Just stand where you were for an hour.”

Jinto found no humor in Risch’s statement. He starts to leave. “Wait. I just talked with Noel. She told me what Sobbash said. What you don’t know is what she said in your defense.” Risch relates the entire conversation to Jinto. Jinto shook his head. “That little fool. She’s going to wind up chasing shadows on the outer rings. She had no right to jump down Sobbash like...” Risch stops him. “Jinto! You’re an ASS too.”

Jinto stares at him, but before he could speak Risch continues, “You have not got the picture yet. You’re still in the glass sloshing around. Noel and I care deeply for you and Lafiel. We are your friends. We will defend you no matter what. Wake up Jinto! Stop feeling sorry. You still can shape your destiny don’t give up on us.” Jinto realizes that he had completely thought this through without even considering discussing it with Lafiel. He’d guessed what her response would have been and proceeded from there. Risch was right. He was being an ASS! He thanks Risch and goes looking for Lafiel. Risch watches as Jinto left the engineering department. He was wondering just what Lafiel would say to him.

*********
Sobbash had left the ship and made her way to her favorite tavern. She was through most of the first bottle when the chair next to her moves. This slender arm grabs the bottle and pours a glass full. The bottle returns to where it had been and the glass disappears. “I thought you did not drink alcohol?” The glass returns the arm picks up the bottle and fills the glass again. The bottle returns and the glass disappeared. “I usually don’t. But when I’ve bawled out a friend. What’s that saying? Ah! Misery loves company. I figured I’d join you and continue the conversation.” Sobbash empties the bottle into her glass. Orders another and say’s, “I think you’ve said quite enough Decca Commander. I’d like to be alone with my drink. If you please.”

The arm reaches for the bottle again, this time Sobbash pulls it away. “You’re not drinking out of my bottle! You want some order your own.” The arm stops. Raises two fingers in the air and points at the bottle. Soon there are three bottles on the table. Two are in use and one remains unopened. “Sobbash I’m sorry. Not for what I said. But how I delivered it to you. I was pretty insensitive myself.” Sobbash holds the glass in front of her staring into the light brown liquid. “Go on Decca Commander. I’m listening.” The Decca Commander pours another drink. “The thing I will apologize for is my comment about you never being in love before. I did not know that for a fact, either way, it was cruel of me to say that.” Sobbash finishes the glass and pours herself another one. “You still have my attention Decca Commander.”

The Decca Commander pours another drink. “I’ve spent the last three months in close personal contact with the Princess and the Count. They’ve had more asked of them than most would understand. I personally believe that they would be happy returning to that planet and living out their lives there. But they were forced into the path they are on. If you believe in destiny. You know Sobbash. After a few of these, you get to feel a little funny, all warm and fuzzy inside.”

*********
Alcohol affects everyone differently. Even with Abh engineering some member’s reported getting a little buzzed their first time at plentiful and strong drink. The drink she was consuming was very potent. From her years of drinking, Sobbash had progressed up the list of potent beverages. This one was one of Samson’s favorites. One bottle would do him in for a day or better. The Decca Commander was getting pretty happy about her new alcohol induced feelings.

*********
“Where was I? Oh yes. Sobbash you and I need to discuss the Count and the Princess. What we can do to help them have a happy future together.” She reaches for the bottle. Sobbash pushes it away. “You’ve had enough Ekuryua you’ve made your point. Now let’s go to your ship and you where you can sleep this off. Then we will finish this little conversation in the morning.” She slips the bottles into her jacket and helps Ekuryua to her ship. Once she has Ekuryua settled. She finds Samson and explains her day to him. “Really? She bawled you out. Then came and drank with you? That is not like her at all. I guess she was being serious.”

Sobbash reaches into her jacket and produces the new bottle Ekuryua never opened. “She never opened this one I can’t take it from her. Can you give it to her when this is all over?” Samson takes the bottle. Then he grabs Sobbash’s hands. She tries to pull away. “Something is wrong isn’t it? I can read you like a book and I don’t like what I’m seeing.” She looks in his eyes. “Samson you are going to have to trust me on this one. I can’t tell a soul. I’m only one of three who knows. It would be very easy to trace and the penalty for this could be death.” Samson let’s loose of her hands. She backs up a few steps. “Thank you Samson. Thank you so very much.” She leaves him. He wonders if he’s done the right thing. He picks up the bottle and looks at it. “Well if Ekuryua were terran. She’d have a beauty of a hangover in the morning. But being Abh. She’ll just be annoyed.” He puts the bottle in his jacket pocket and heads for his quarters. He turns off the lights as he leaves the room.

*********
Jinto enters their quarters very quietly. Lafiel was resting peacefully and he did not want to disturb her. It was past midnight and he could not sleep. Sobbash’s words were flying through his brain. He glances over to Lafiel she looks so beautiful, so peaceful. The thought of having her return to combat and kill again disgusted him. She had changed physically and emotionally Jinto hoped that she would not want to go into combat again. Unconsciously, he had order the modifications made to the Basroil. Not realizing he was giving her the instrument to kill again. His mind was conflicting streams of emotions he finally dozes off in the chair.

He starts to dream. He was on the bridge of the Basroil. They were ready to fire the anti-matter cannon. Lafiel had targeted several warships and was preparing to fire. Jinto knew the blast would vaporize them and kill all aboard. He starts pleading with Lafiel begging her to spare their lives. But she had that smile on her face. The one she had when Baron Febdash was killed. In a move of desperation he went to knock her hand away from the firing controls. She landed a blow to his chest. His chest hurt he was having trouble breathing he was going to pass out.

“Jinto! Jinto! JINTO!” He opens his eyes. Lafiel’s face was inches from his. Her knee firmly planted in his chest. She was wearing her headband. They were connected. He could sense she was there. ”You woke me from a sound sleep. You kept calling my name. Begging me to stop. So I connected us. I saw your dream. Now I sense your confusion. We’ve not done this for a long time. Relax Jinto. Show me what’s bothering you and I’ll let you look around inside of me too.” He focuses on her face. He notices her color was better and her knee was sure making an impression in his chest.

“Lafiel you think you could remove your knee now?” She removes her knee and knelt next to him. “Relax Jinto something drove you to this. I want to see it so I can help.” Jinto follows Lafiel’s orders. He showed her everything that had transpired since they arrived at the depot. Seeing all that had happened. All that was said was a bit unnerving to Lafiel. “So your worried I’ll go into combat again and kill again or get myself killed? Some pretty cruel things were said to you today. Had I been feeling better we could have handled most of them together. You should not have to carry this burden by yourself. Jinto, it’s your turn. Want to go exploring? Jinto hesitates. Lafiel could sense this. She would not force herself upon him. So she relaxes and concentrates on what she thought the future should be.

*********
The scenery becomes familiar, the lake, and shelter, back on the planet. Lafiel is standing on the ridge overlooking the lake. It is a calm, very blue and peaceful day. Jinto sees the world through her eyes and then he sees himself and what is this he sees. Children, two of them, a boy and a girl following Jinto down by the lake, with fishing poles in hand. They stop, turn towards Lafiel and wave. Her gaze returns to the lake the beauty and stillness of it. The vision fades. It’s replaced by the view of the depot. Jinto is sitting in front of her, connected by their headbands. The emotion builds inside of him. He leans over and kisses Lafiel. She removes their headbands and the next hour is spent in an embrace.

“Jinto we have got a lot to talk about, but tonight you and I need rest.” She helps him to the bed. Undresses him and slips in to bed with him. “Lafiel? You want two children?” she cuddles next to him. “Two, three, five. However many my body will allow. I’ve known you’ve wanted children for longest time and had you not had your life extended. We would have started by now. If I was well enough to. We have lot of time ahead of us Jinto. But I’d like the war to be over and our lives peaceful before we bring children into the universe. They deserve that much don’t you think?” He turns and faces her “Five? I never knew how you felt about children. I always figured we would discuss that when the time came.”

Lafiel gets this silly grin on her face. “I’ve not figured out what it is with you Jinto. The moment we get into bed and try to talk we get interrupted by.” She places her hand on his hip. Contain yourself Jinto nothing is going to happen tonight. I’m feeling better, but that does not interest me now. Let me get back to my normal self and I promise I’ll satisfy you, shall I say, royally.” She pushes him to his back. She nuzzles into his side. It’s there they fall asleep.

*********
The next morning it was back for more tests. This time the results were promising. “The injections have stimulated your bone marrow to produce more red blood cells. The count is at the low end of normal about four point two. You were at three point seven five yesterday. Now your hemoglobin levels that’s where I see the greatest improvement. You were dangerously low yesterday. Seven point one to be exact. You’re up to an eight point six today. Normal level is twelve point one to fifteen point one. Just to let you know how close you came. Below six point two can lead to permanent brain damage due to the lack of oxygen.”

Jinto did not understand, on board the ship was an oxygen rich environment so how could her level be so low? “It’s the bloods ability to absorb oxygen and carry it to the cells. It would make little difference of the oxygen content of the air she was breathing. The blood could not carry it to the body properly. Stay on your diet, exercise and take the remedy. I want to see you in three days. Should anything strange happen you come in immediately Okay?” They agree, thank the doctor and leave the medical center. “Lafiel what’s next? Where shall we go?” She answers in a single word. “Basroil.”

Jinto took her to the remote docking area. The long tube connected the Basroil to the far end of the space dock. Donning space helmets and opening the hatch they floated towards the main hatch on the Basroil. There was an atmosphere on the Basroil. The helmets were a precaution should there be a leak in the transit tube. On board they head for the bridge. Power on the ship was set at station keeping and the ship itself was firmly moored to the pier. Lafiel sat in the center seat. She inserted the crystals from her headband into the ships computer system. The Basroil came to life, system diagnostics start it was then she noticed the two new additions to the ship.

“Jinto what is this?” she was pointing to the new shield engine management system. Jinto explained that the engines and shields had been modified they were fifty-five percent more powerful than before. “I see and why is the anti-proton cannon attached directly to the main engine anti-matter line?” Her question was about to be answered. The Anti-matter Beam Cannon ran its diagnostics. Then it displayed its performance specifications on the screen. Lafiel’s jaw fell open. “Are these numbers correct Jinto?” Jinto glances at the screen. “Actually there a little low. Paveryua must have the power to the cannon dampened.” Lafiel still stares at the display. Finally she says. “This is the most powerful ship in the Empire.” Jinto put his hand on her shoulder. “Second most powerful. Is the sensor array up?” She nods. “Lafiel the Lashkau is just coming from behind the moon. Scan it when it’s clear.” Lafiel switches to the tactical mode and sends the information to the main display.

She scans the Lashkau as it comes into view. The readout of the armament aboard of the Lashkau was impressive. The firepower contained with in the ship made the Basroil pale in comparison. “Oh my Admiral Spoor’s almost invincible. These two ships could almost...” Jinto stops her. “Don’t be to confident Lafiel these are prototypes. They are not perfect. They have small flaws. They are older designs that have been highly modified. In any case there not ready for combat, yet. The Lashkau has not fired her reactor or cannon The Basroil is two steps ahead of them. The reactor and cannon have been fired, look here.” Jinto opens a data file with Paveryua’s accidental test fire recorded in it. “That was at eight five percent reactor power. The cannon on the Lashkau is one and a half times more powerful than this one is.” Lafiel looks at the data. Her expression changes to worry from wonderment.

“Jinto if I were to fire this cannon at full power at that moon.” The tactical display shifts to a moon one point two five light seconds away. “What would happen to it?” Jinto looks at the moon. He enters the data into the fire control computer. “Lafiel the computer will answer your question. I just programmed it to fire dead center on the moon. The simulation will show what will happen. The moon vanishes in a ball of light. Lafiel sits back in her seat. “What does this do to ships?” Jinto places his hands on her shoulders and looks her straight in the face. “It makes them vanish. Complete and total vaporization.” Lafiel went pale she powers down and disconnects herself from the ship. They secured the ship and leave it. Returning to their quarters she put Jinto down for a nap. Leaving him a note she ventures out for a while.

*********
“Show me the location of Kilo-Commander Sobbash.” The display blinks, a bright blue triangle appears. She knew the location. The previous evening had left Ekuryua with many unanswered questions. This afternoon was going to be different. She would get the answers she sought. She checks her uniform makes a couple of adjustments and leaves the ship. On her way out she notifies the first officer where she would be and leaves instructions not to be disturbed. Clearing the gangway she heads for a small tavern on the edge of the depot. Her sense of purpose was clouding her other senses. She was being followed and she never sensed it.

The tavern had just opened. The employees were still setting the chairs and tables up. Sobbash was seated in a corner booth she sat across from her. “Last night was pretty stupid on my part. I still have some questions, have you got the answers?” Sobbash quits looking at the bottle and looks at her. “You know I never drank this early until I got assigned here. You got questions? You think I have the answers? Well, fire away. I’m listening. Before she could speak the chair next to Sobbash moves, a body sits in it and an arm reaches for the bottle. “You actually drink this stuff? No wonder you look like hell.”

Sobbash never looks over. The Decca Commander finally spoke. “What has you so worried that you spend all of your off duty time here drinking? How does it affect Jinto and Lafiel?” The body next to Sobbash spoke. “You’ve gotten pretty close to them to call them by their first names. I don’t ever go that far.” Sobbash looks around her. “You know if Her Highness was here I could tell all of you at the same time.” At that moment a head pops around the corner. “Somebody call my name?” She pulls the chair next to the Decca Commander out and sits in it. She faces the person in the shadow. “Well Painiach I see your curiosity got the best of you as well?”

Spoors face came from out of the shadows. “Where’s the Count?” Lafiel looks at her. “Asleep finally. I left a note he’ll not disturb us.” She looks at Sobbash. “Spoor is right. You look horrible. Get it off your chest Sobbash. I order you to.” Sobbash turns and glares at Noel. “Ekuryua you brought them didn’t you? You never mentioned…” Lafiel stops her. “Noel knows nothing! Spoor followed her here and I followed Spoor. Seems we all wanted to talk to you. This is the best place. Not many members of the Star Forces hang out here.”

Sobbash pours another drink. ”Kenesh is on her way here. She would have told you this when she got here. I’ll just save her the effort. It started right after you exposed Dusanyu’s clone. Kenesh came to me and asked for my help. She said she needed ears out amongst the outposts. All I had to do was listen and report anything out of the ordinary.” She took a drink from the glass. “Lately it’s been too much to handle. Too many things are happening and my loyalties are being tested. My loyalties to the Empire and my loyalties to my friends. Kenesh has not been told everything. When she gets here I’m going to be in a lot of trouble. There are things here she should have known about and my failure to inform her could cost me everything.”

She finishes the glass and pours another. Before she can bring it to her lips Lafiel places her hand across it. “Besides Kenesh, you’ve been feeding Samson, who’s been feeding Jinto as well?” Sobbash nods. She looks at Spoor. “She’s fed me information too and she’s fed Samson information from me to send to the Count.” Sobbash looks at Ekuryua. “You understand why I ordered you to escort them. To keep you out of this I know you too well. Seeing me in trouble you would have risked your career as well. One of us taking the fall will be good enough.” Lafiel removes her hand from Sobbash’s glass.

She calls for three more glasses. “Well we need to celebrate now.” Confused, the three others stare at her. “Sobbash has a new title. Chief of Security for Count Hyde and myself and part of her duties are to report to me on the things she sees. I asked her not to report some of those things to the Capital.” She pours three glasses and kills off Sobbash’s bottle. “Here’s to Sobbash. Her future is secure.” They toast and Sobbash comments, “Kenesh is going to have your hide. Your Highness.” Lafiel smiles. “I don’t think so Sobbash. She’s never been good at arguing with the royal family. I still can pull rank on her.”

Sobbash takes another drink. “There is something you all should know. Dusanyu’s clone went insane, Doctor Sasoum terminated his life as he requested and Kenesh was not there when it happened. So go easy on her when she gets here.” The mood around the table grows somber. Spoor, Noel and Lafiel were stunned. This news was not what any of them wanted to hear. Lafiel raised her glass. “To Kenesh.” The other three joined in the toast. The bottle empty they return to the depot office. The next couple of hours were spent reviewing Sobbash’s observations so the four of them would have a through understanding of what was transpiring around them. When they adjourned for the evening, Lafiel Noel and Spoor head for the gym and Sobbash goes looking for Samson.

*********
Noel watches as Lafiel and Spoor work out. When they were finished, she joined them in the hot tub. She had a question. “With the Lashkau and the Basroil refitted does this mean you plan on going after the Rebels by yourselves?” Spoor went to answer but Lafiel spoke first. “This is Kenesh’s operation. We wait till she gets here and then well we shall see.” Lafiel gets a strange look on her face. Noel inquires. “Are you ok Lafiel? Your not feeling bad are you?” Lafiel stares at the ceiling. “No I’m fine. It’s the Basroil that bothers me. I’ve seen its firepower and the thing scares me to death. It’s a vengeance weapon. Built to take revenge for the actions of the United Mankind.”

She continues to stare and poses a question. “Painiach. The Lashkau is more powerful than the Basroil. Does it not scare you as well?” Spoor reaches across the tub and taps Lafiel on the arm. She changes her gaze from the ceiling to Spoors face. “They are machines. They cannot attack by themselves. It takes an experienced commander to captain a ship like that. Do you fear the ship or do you fear your inability to command it. Your Highness?” Lafiel refuses to answer. She gets out of the tub early. Dries off and changes clothes. She left without saying another word.

*********
Noel faces Spoor. “You think that was a wise thing to do Admiral?” Spoor stares across the room to the door that just shut. “We need to know if she can still command a ship. Whether it is the Basroil, or your ship, or the Lashkau. If she can no longer command, she will lose all respect and authority. It’s part of being a member of the royal family. She does not have to fight, just take command. She’s been out of the center seat for a long time. I still believe she can handle the ship.” The timer went off and Spoor and Noel got out of the tub. They dried off, changed and went their separate ways.

*********
Jinto had read Lafiel’s note he wonders where she’s gone. A quick check of his creunoc had revealed that Spoor, Noel, Lafiel and Sobbash were no where to be found. Figuring they were together somewhere he waited. His next checked shows Spoor, Noel, and Lafiel at the gym and Sobbash at Samson’s office. His last check shows Noel aboard the Attack Frigate, Spoor in her quarters and Lafiel was, aboard the Basroil. Before he could hit any buttons, the moorings to the Basroil disconnect. The ship was powering up and floating towards the Lashkau.

*********
Samson had just opened the bottle when the alarm rang he leapt to the security display. “Somebody’s stealing the Basroil!” Sobbash stood along side him. “Not stealing Samson, look at the pilots ID code.” The display told the tale. “Rank. Admiral, Command ID: 00977089 Name: Ablïarsec, Lafiel.” Samson looks out the window. The Basroil was drifting towards the Lashkau. “Well she better get some thrusters going or she going to slam into the Lashkau!” Sobbash stood there a smile came across her face. “Wait Samson. Do nothing. I do believe she’s going to make a point.” The Basroil drifts closer.

*********
“Commander Kufadis look at this!” The navigator’s voice startles him. He steps to the display. The Basroil was drifting on a collision course towards the Lashkau. “Sound the alarm! Brace for collision!” The alarm rang the collision announcement was given and Admiral Spoor contacted the bridge. “Just what is going on over there the whole base went on alert!” Kufadis patches the tactical video into the conversation. “Admiral it’s the Basroil. It’s drifting towards us on a collision course.” The navigator spoke. “Collision in seventy–five seconds Commander. Shall I order abandon ship, Sir?” Admiral Spoor started giving orders from her room not knowing the complete situation aboard the Lashkau. “Move the ship out of the way! Anybody hailed the stationmaster or the Basroil?” Kufadis spoke. “Admiral we are unable to move. Main power is off line. We are still moored to the tender and communications is a snarl.”

Before he could finish the Basroil stops and comes about. They were now facing each other, about fifteen hundred meters apart. “Silence the alarm secure from collision.” Kufadis took a moment to gather his thoughts and reevaluate the situation. “Commander the communications interference has stopped and the Basroil is hailing us.” The door to the bridge opens, a winded Admiral Spoor enters. “Establish communications with the Basroil.” The main display energizes and a familiar face came into view.

“You made good time Painiach, I hope you did not strain anything.” Sitting in the center seat in full uniform. Lafiel was about to prove a point, a possibly deadly point. “You made a statement about and hour ago you want to test it?” Kufadis whispers in Spoors ear. “Now what did you do?” She pushes him away. “Later Kufadis.” Spoor took the center seat. She glares back at Lafiel. “You’re challenging my comment on your ability to command that ship aren’t you?” Lafiel smiles. “I know you can’t move or defend yourself Lashkau. I very well aware of that, have you heard of the lander game, called chicken?”

*********
The communications black out had driven Jinto to Samson’s office. He joins Samson and Sobbash just before Lafiel hails the Lashkau. Listening to the conversation he realizes what Lafiel has planned. “Samson you got to help me stop her, she’s going to do something very childish just to prove a point and someone might get hurt in the process.” Samson goes to leave the room with Jinto. It’s Sobbash that stops them. “Leave her be, this is something she has got to settle in her mind. If you two interfere, she will never know the outcome, she will never be sure of herself again. Leave her alone I beg of you.” Jinto stops, he and Samson return to Sobbash’s side. “Sobbash you are sure about this?” Sobbash looks at him. “As sure as I was. When she returned to Lobnas II to get you. She’s made up her mind, as she did then. She needs to carry this through no matter what happens. She needs the confidence put back into her and she’s the only one who can do this.” They now watch the display.

*********
“Chicken you say? Sounds intriguing. There are standard rules?” Spoor looks over to Kufadis he was frantically searching the database to get a definition of what Lafiel was talking about. Spoor was playing along till he could find the answer. The data appears on her creunoc: “Chicken is a game in which two players drive cars at each other. The first to swerve away and slow down loses and is humiliated as the "chicken"; if neither player swerves, the result is a potentially fatal head-on collision. The principle of the game is to create pressure until one-person backs down. The phrase game of chicken is also used as a metaphor for a situation where two parties engage in a showdown where they have nothing to gain and only pride stops them from backing down.”

Lafiel was planning on exploring the metaphors of playing chicken. “By now you have the standard definition, I plan on modifying the rules, I’m going to play chicken with the Lashkau. The fifteen hundred meters that I am presently at will be the most distance I will be from you. The closest will be. Well should I impact the Lashkau then I’ve blinked. However if you concede then you’ve blinked. Just remember these engines have been modified. I’ve never used them before so it won’t be all that easy. I do suggest you put your crew in pressure suits just incase I goof up.”

Jinto looks at Samson. “How sensitive are those new engines?” Samson pulls up the technical specifications on them. “If she plans on using the engines instead of the maneuvering thrusters. She better be on her game, the ship will respond twice as fast as it use to. She’s really going out on a limb this time.” He rolls his creunoc to his lips. “Paveryua, Seelnay, have you hear everything?” They had. “Then you know what measures to take, just stay out of the way. Stand by but do not interfere, understand?” They understood. The inspection vessel Seelnay powers up and comes from behind the moon. It held station two hundred and fifty thousand meters from the Lashkau. A complete suited repair crew was on board, ready to launch at the first sign of trouble.

Its very simple, Lafiel you shall say.
In return I'd like to call you Jinto."

Lafiel had powered the reactor to ninety five percent. The maneuvering thrusters were in stand by mode. She put the Comm link with the Lashkau on stand by and started towards the ship. The first pass she made from bow to stern at twelve hundred meters tightening her orbit she almost clips the tender still docked to the Lashkau. Concentric orbits everyone faster and closer to the Lashkau. At seventy-five meters Admiral Spoor blinks. “That is close enough, Your Highness. I concede. You can still pilot a ship.” To bring her point home, Lafiel makes the final pass at twenty meters and almost full power. The Lashkau shakes from the discharge of the Basroil’s engines. Spoor comments loudly. “Your Highness, you should be glad we’re not armed. One more pass like that and I’d shoot you out of the stars.”

The Basroil comes to a halt at the exact spot where it began. The main viewer on the Lashkau becomes active and a very exhausted Lafiel appears. “I’m glad you understand that I would have done anything to get you to concede. I always fight to win Painiach.” She slumps back in the chair and passes out. The display fades to black.

*********
“Now Paveryua! Board the Basroil! The Princess is out cold get her and it back here.” The Seelnay docks with the Basroil. Paveryua and crew take the Basroil back to it’s mooring and the Seelnay brings Lafiel to the docking bay. Jinto is the first one on board. Lafiel is lying in the crew quarters she has been out since she was brought on board. Jinto walks up to her, he kneels by her side, kisses her forehead and says. “You stubborn little fool. I know what you were trying to prove out there. You did it Lafiel. You almost killed yourself trying. You still got that death wish don’t you my love?” She moves ever so slowly one eye opens. “Think you got me all figured out Jinto. I’m just chalked full of surprises.” She looks around the room. She realizes where she is and comments. “So that’s who carried me aboard. Jinto, tell Paveryua to handle me a little more gently next time. I think he’s bruised my butt.” Jinto kisses Lafiel. She doses off to sleep again.

*********
“Admiral this might interest you.” The first officer brings up the recording of the last pass of the Basroil. “The distance was twenty meters till she got here then the pieces that extend from the ships missed by one hundred sixty-one Cm. Any closer and she would have split half of the starboard side of the ship open. And comparing the data between the two ships she knew exactly how far she missed us by.” Spoor stood there she was thinking those numbers they were familiar she could not place them. Then it finally hit her, one hundred and sixty-one-Cm was Lafiel’s height. It was a true show of force. The only thing that stood between the Basroil and the Lashkau was the height of the pilot. Spoor made a mental note not to make and jokes about the Princess height.

She left the Lashkau and returns to her quarters on the depot. Kufadis decides to follower her there too. “You want to explain what just happened? We about lost the ship and you seem pretty calm about it.” Spoor explains to him the past couple of days. He listens carefully. “Kenesh is coming and you and the Princess are having a grand dare session with all of our lives at stake. What is it with you two? I really believe you have a death wish.” She stood before him the look on her face was not pleasant at first. However the more she listened to his words the more she softened. She wrapped her arms around him. “Kufadis you worry too much. But you keep on thinking that way. I would not have let any harm come to you or the crew. You have to believe me on that.”

*********
Samson won’t let Sobbash leave. “You’re hiding something Sobbash I get an answer before you leave this time.” Not in the mood to fight Sobbash makes one statement. “You are going to have to wait till Kenesh gets here. Once I’ve spoken with her I will tell you all that I can. Samson, don’t put me any further in a corner than you already have. You’ve never seen me fight for my life before and you do not want that effort directed towards you. I can be pretty brutal. Just trust me. Please trust me.” Stunned he lets her leave the office. Before she disappears she turns and smiles at him.

*********
Lafiel sat in bed reading the book Debeusec had given her. Jinto sat in a chair across the room studying the latest depot reports. They had been this way, silent, for the most part of the day. They had dined separately and Jinto did not accompany Lafiel to the gym. They were two people in the same room aware of each other’s presence but afraid to start a conversation. Neither of them was willing to come to terms with Lafiel’s actions of the night before. Jinto rose from his chair stretched and left the room. Watching this Lafiel closed the book and took a pillow from the bed. She hugs the pillow and softly cries. She kept hold of the pillow. Pulling the covers over her head and facing the wall and turns out the lights.

*********
“Jinto.” It was Risch that was addressing him. He really was not in a mood to have any kind of meaningful conversation. However he did respond. “What is it Risch?” Risch motions him to sit in chair to his right. “You guys fighting again?” Perplexed. Jinto sat down and faced him. “What gave you that idea?” Risch smiles. “Every time you two go at it. I find you here in engineering staring at the reactor core. I admit it does have a calming effect. But Jinto you keep forgetting to wear protective clothing around this place. Keep this careless attitude up and the possibility of you having children is going to be zero. Then Lafiel will be very upset.” Jinto sat their Risch’s words, he understood them, but would Lafiel really want children now that she’s found herself?

A blank stare is all that greeted Risch. “Jinto, you know the whole system saw her little dare last night?” Jinto still stares at him. “She broadcast it to the entire system. Noel about fainted at the last part. She commented she’d never wanted to go riding with Her Highness on a dare. I have to admit it was some of the most skillful flying I’ve ever seen. Especially when she laced herself between the tender and the Lashkau. She missed the tender by less than twenty meters.” Jinto looks at him. “Sixteen point seven-five to be exact. She’s been closer than that before but that was twelve years ago. She skimmed so close to an UMK destroyer. I think we might have traded paint. Of course, I’ll never know. We destroyed the shuttle before it could be examined.”

Risch looks at him. “Clasbul, the shuttle from the Gosroth, your unplanned surface landing. Right?” Jinto looks at him. “You’ve been doing some research I see. What else do you know?” Risch smiles. “Well after your pointed comments about Martine. Noel and I went through your and Lafiel’s past. Here's something that might interest you. You have a past. Lafiel’s starts the minute she meets you. There is almost no information on Lafiel from her birth till the time she met you. Well at least personal information. Her military records are all there. Her private life from birth to age sixteen is a mystery.”

Jinto leans back in chair. He stares at the ceiling. “She’s got a past. I know most of it. Let’s say that something’s are best left out of a personal record.” Jinto returns his gaze to Risch. “Risch answer me a question if you can.” Risch smiles. “Sure as long as there is answers for it, go ahead ask away.” Jinto spoke slowly. “You know Noel is a warrior, do you ever think she can be truly happy not fighting?” Risch’s look was one of amazement and shock. “Wait Jinto! You think Noel is happy with what she’s doing? You really think she enjoys the possibility of not coming back every time we set out?” Jinto has a blank look on his face.

Something clicks and Risch responds. “Is this what you two are being silly over? You think Lafiel wants to go off somewhere and get killed? To uphold some silly royal family tradition, you really think she’s happy being a warrior? Now that she’s dared Spoor and won. You think she’s going off to slay the evil Rebels or some silly nonsense like that? I though you told me you knew her. Man, are you clueless.”

Jinto’s face is showing his anger. Risch is far from being done. “Jinto, hear me, Admiral Kenesh will be here soon. I have a feeling she’s going to ask a lot of us all. You and Lafiel better get this settled between you, before she gets here or you stand to lose her. At Vorash Lafiel showed you how much she loved you. But Jinto you can’t remake her in an image that makes you happy. There are things about Noel that I’m not happy with but I live with them. However I don’t keep my feelings from her. We have had a couple of great arguments. I’ve been ignored at times too. When’s the last time you two really sat down and discussed what was on your minds? With no sugar coating, just a cold, hard, truthful, discussion?”

Jinto ponders Risch’s words. He and Lafiel had talked but they never went through a complete discussion. Something always interrupted them and then they never picked up where they left off. It’s been like skimming a book they never got into the detail. They never really expressed their total feelings on most subjects. “Risch your right. I guess I need to go back to the depot and talk everything out with her. Kenesh will be here in less than three days. I need to know where we stand.” He gets up from the table and stares around the corner towards the containment room. The chaos within the reactor reflects his mind and emotions at the moment. “See you around Risch and thanks” He leaves the ship.

Stopping by Ekuryua’s cabin Risch lets himself in. She is still sleeping a direct result of all the alcohol she has consumed. She never got drunk however her digestive tracks went into an uproar over the amount of alcohol consumed. She had spent the past two days being very nauseated at times. He kissed her she came awake. “Jinto is on his way to confront Lafiel. I’ve notified Samson and Spoor they will leave them alone. You were right they never finished anything while they were on board ship. I hope they can work this out.” She smiles and says. “I hope by the time Kenesh gets here I can be functional for more that thirty minutes at a time.” This horrible noise emits from her abdomen. She doubles up and grows pale. “Keep reminding me to not drink, like a fish, yes that’s the words Seelnay used, again.” She closes her eyes Risch kisses her and leaves the room. Glancing at his creunoc he sees Jinto has arrived at their quarters he also notices that Lafiel is awake her life signs slightly elevated.

*********
Opening the door Jinto finds Lafiel sitting in the middle of the bed facing the door holding a pillow tightly. The pillow has been hugged into an hourglass shape it show signs of being cried in. “Your back Jinto. We have to talk. Close the door and lock it. Then come to me. Please.” He promptly obeys her. She moves a little towards the end of the bed allowing him room to sit next to her. Jinto sits next to her and reaches for her. “No Jinto. Not now, I’m comfortable like this.” She squeezes the pillow tighter. “I have a jumble of things inside of me. All of them are important to me and I wish to speak with you about them. My first thought was to link us so you could see the chaos. I decided against that for now, So I’m going to start at one subject and go on from there. You will do me the courtesy of refraining from commenting till I’ve finished?” Jinto nods.

“You told me that when you were born. There were no special expectations for you. That your destiny would be of your own choosing, I’ve read the book father gave me it pretty well defends your statements. There are members of your race that push their children to either excel or follow in their footsteps. But by and large those are rare instances. From the moment I was conceived there were grandiose plans made for my life. Plans, I had no control over and I had been genetically conditioned to accept without any reservations. I was to follow the family profession. I was destined to rule this Empire, to be the leader of my race and strive for the betterment of the Empire and the Abh people. My early years were spent in intensive training to achieve that one goal to prepare me for a fierce competition that my Grandmother had won and my father had painfully lost. I was fourteen when I had my first apprehensions about becoming an Empress. There was no one I could confide in. No one to express my feeling to.” She looks Jinto is still listening. She then continues.

“At that time I entered the Star Forces. I love the Star Forces. It was the first place that didn’t expect me to become an Empress. Granted the others around knew who I was and what my destiny might be they tried to isolate me they almost rejected me. Then I was assigned to the Gosroth. There I discovered who Plakia actually was and relished in having my mother around. Then that fate-changing day came. The day I went to pick you up and return you to the Gosroth. You did not know who I was and you were afraid of me then.” She looks at him he nods. “I figured as much, the rest of my life except for the three years we were separated you know about. You’ve been there through almost all of it by my side a stalwart friend.”

She turns away from Jinto. She focuses on a picture frame on her desk. A picture frame she carries everywhere with her. Contained within that frame are pictures of herself and Jinto, her father, brother, grandmother and Plakia. The tears start running down her face she turns and faces Jinto again. “Our first few years were pretty rocky. I lost a ship, a lot of my friends, Plakia and almost lost you twice.

Then came your conversion. I was not happy at first, because I thought you would no longer the wonderful alien I met. But to my surprise you still were you. Maybe a little bit better than before. I started falling in love with you. I still had trouble telling you how I felt about things, before I could put everything into words we both had our crises. You had always stood beside me. Finally I got to stand beside you. Then the thing I’ve been leading up to happened. There was some permanent damage done to me by the UMK mind games. I’ve not had the courage till now to tell you about it. I’ve hinted at it a couple of times but you either did not understand me or chose to ignore me. But now Jinto we need to discuss it at length.”

Jinto’s look became more focused. He had understood Lafiel’s words. He wanted to speak but he still was unsure what Lafiel was getting at. So he remained silent. Lafiel took this as a cue to continue. “Do you know why certain members of the Star Forces were given the choice of leaving or not returning for five years?” He shook his head. “The effects of the mind game were different to a degree depending on the individual. However most of us suffered a long lasting and irreversible effect.” Jinto reaches for Lafiel’s hand she allows him to touch it. It was cool and damp. She was in a cold sweat. She smiles at him and finishes what she had to say.

“Our destiny genes were set dormant. We were freed from our genetic predetermination. This is what has brought about the factions within the Empire striving to break away from the normal order of things. I was freed of the voice that compelled me to become an Empress. I was free to be and love and live where I chose to. But the training I received when I was younger started interfering with my desires. I don’t mind being a diplomat, however there has been this urge within me to command a ship again. I’ve satisfied that urge for the moment, taking the Basroil and playing chicken with the Lashkau gave me a renewed purpose to my life that I can do and be anything I chose to be.” Jinto felt her hand return to a more normal state. Lafiel had not finished she had one more topic to discuss. She moved a little closer to Jinto, she still kept the pillow close to her chest.

“Jinto I used a couple of statements earlier that I’ve never used before in your presence. I said you were not of my race, an alien. I was taught not to say such things. But they are true. You were born on a planet raised as an alien, and then my race conquered your system. You were forced to become Abh by education and indoctrination and finally you were physically converted to be an Abh. Yet you do not hate me or my race, or do you?”

Before Jinto could speak she continued to blurt out what was on her mind. “Had you done that to me I would have fought you and your people with every ounce of my being. I would have died first rather than be converted. I don’t understand Jinto, you should hate me and my people for all that they have put you through. But you don’t and I’m having trouble dealing with those contradicting facts. Help me understand because I won’t be at peace within my being till I do understand.” She buries her face in the pillow and cries her heart out.

Jinto sat there sorting through the vast amount of information Lafiel had presented him with. His questions were strangely along the same lines as hers were. She did answer part of the question that had been nagging him since she took off with the Basroil. At the moment Lafiel was in a full blown crying fit. It was best to let it subside before he tried to talk with her. He used the time to decide where to start. The sobbing finally subsides and Jinto spoke to her even though her head was still buried in the pillow.

“Lafiel remember I told you it was our differences that made us stronger. You being a child of space and me being a child of the land are the greatest difference and our greatest strength. You have sold yourself short. Your pride has gotten in the way again. Think a minute what have we spent the last years doing? We have been experiencing each other’s cultures. I’ve been every where in space with you and you’ve covered the land as well. You do enjoy the land? Don’t you?”

Her head rises from the pillow and nods then returns to its last position. “The only place I’ve not been able to take you too lays so close and yet... Martine where I was born, where I grew up and what I gave up to be with you and your people. Not to be an Abh like you. But to become an Abh with your help. There is a difference Lafiel. From the moment I met you I realized I wanted to be with you till the day I died. At first you scared me to death. You were so different. So confidant and self-assured in space. When we wound up on Clasbul, I realized then that you were just as vulnerable as I was, even more so. You were like me you just never could express it, your pride kept getting in the way. It’s that same stubborn pride that I fell in love with and has also caused me great heartache.”

He reaches over and lifts her head from the pillow. The red, tear-stained cheeks and misty eyes look back at him. “Lafiel you and I work well together. I enjoy being with you, being around you, being in love with you. I know you enjoy all those things too. I have urges at times. I normally don’t do anything about them maybe I should. Can you answer me one question now and I’ll let you sleep? When Kenesh gets here, if she offers you the choice of staying or going?”

Jinto stops himself he already knew the answer. Well at least he thought he did, he smiles. “You’ll go won’t you Lafiel?” Her answer was a bit of a surprise. “If you want me to go. Then, yes I would like to see this finished.” Jinto leans forward and kisses her on the cheek. The sweet salty taste of her pleased his lips. “Lafiel you can go. But you can’t go alone. I signed up for the long haul. Wherever you go my love I shall follow.” She releases the pillow and reaches for Jinto she pulls him and the pillow towards her. A mighty hug and kiss on the cheek were followed by these words. “Jinto. Thank you. I want to understand the logic that brought about your decision. I was so sure in my head you would say no, but my heart kept telling me you would let me go. Should I listen to my heart a little more often?”

Jinto removes the pillow from between them and pulls Lafiel close to him. “Listen, do you hear that? It’s the rhythm of our hearts trying to beat as one. Lafiel there was no great burst of logic that fueled my decision. I listened to my heart and yours too. Twelve years I’ve known you and one thing I’m convinced of, when you’ve made up your mind to do something you deem important and I can not find fault or argument with it. It’s best to let you follow your head. But if you start listening to your heart and mine as well, the answers will get much simpler.” He releases his grip on her and gently slips her into bed putting a dry pillow beneath her head he covers and kisses her. “Jinto you are going to join me and sleep with me tonight?” He smiles. “In a bit Lafiel. I want to take a walk and clear my mind before I retire is that okay with you?”

For a moment she was going to deny him his walk then she reconsidered. “Don’t be gone too long. I don’t want to be lonely for very long tonight.” He leaves and makes the rounds of the depot. Seelnay spied him. She did not approach him. He returns undresses and slips into bed next to Lafiel. He set the “Do not disturb” message. Then drifts off to sleep.

*********
“So you saw the Count out walking early this morning Seelnay?” There were so many for breakfast this morning Seelnay was on her third tray. “Yes Admiral Spoor and when I went to get them for breakfast. The “Do not disturb” sign was lit and the lock secured. Do I need to make any more food?” Spoor, Kufadis, Noel, Risch, Paveryua, and Samson all answer. “No!” She looks around one person had not spoken. “Commander Sobbash do you need more food?” She reaches for the glass on the table. “You got something stronger than apple juice?” The balance of the table answers her question. “No!”

“Commander Sobbash. We asked you to this breakfast so we might have your input on our upcoming decisions. Not so you could sit there and be happy.” Kufadis lead the discussion. “Were you able to get the information?” Sobbash nods she removes the crystal from around her neck. “Before we start going over this data. Admiral Spoor, I need your help. Atosuryua thinks I’m over here carrying out her orders to chew you and the Princess out for that little display the other day. If you could cover for me I’d be thankful.” Spoor’s face shows her displeasure with Sobbash’s comments. “Sobbash that won’t be a problem. Your commander needs to be taken down a notch or two anyway. Is she really going to be that much of a problem?”

Sobbash smiles. “When you take command again you will be senior to her, at the moment you’re listed as inactive, medical recuperation. She’s had a field day since then. She’ll probably resist your first set of orders, however if Admiral Kenesh changes your status then she’ll begrudgingly go along. She not to be trusted, she still is working under the premise that Her Highness will ascend to the throne. Until that does not happen, she going to be one very stubborn Baroness.” Spoor looks around the table. Noel, Samson and Seelnay are all nodding in agreement. “Fine. I’ll deal with the Baroness, later. What have you got for us now?”

“There are four reports on this crystal. One is the latest fleet deployment. Two are general communications. The last is a report from Nefee to Kenesh on the progress in Admiral Nastoyia’s fleet. Nefee did not code it secret. He should have. It shows the number of resistance personal inside Nastoyia’s fleet. Looks like Nefee ran roughshod on them all. It also states the Nastoyia will be battle ready in nine days as planned. The nine days and battle ready are repeated throughout the balance of the communication and there were two hundred personnel that have been reassigned.

Sobbash stares across the table. “I think we should look through our personnel as well. Kenesh will be here in two days I don’t think we have any leaks but if the information about the Lashkau and the Basroil were to make it to the enemy well that might be costly. I took the last step and went through the communications sent from within the Hyde System to all points with in the Empire. Nothing out of the ordinary has been sent for the last one hundred and twenty days. That covers the period before and after Nastoyia’s first run in with the Rebels and the refit of the Basroil and Lashkau. The Hyde System is not as backwater as Febdash is. But it’s not as popular as the Vorash or the other kingdoms. So, maybe we don’t have any spies, yet.”

“I take offense to the word backwater being used to describe the Hyde system.” Sobbash turns. Jinto and Lafiel are standing in the doorway. “Well isn’t this a quaint little gathering shall we leave or are we free to stay?” The sound off trays being dropped was Lafiel’s answer. “I’m sorry Your Highness when I came to get you and Count Hyde for breakfast the “Do not disturb” light was lit so I went on. You two were supposed to be here.” Feeling a bit embarrassed and sorry for their comments Jinto and Lafiel join them. Seelnay serves them breakfast and Kufadis fills them in as to what had already transpired.

“Here’s the fleet deployment. It’s forty hours old. But I think it’s about as accurate as we will get before Kenesh arrives. You can pretty well see the layout. What I want to comment on is the several holes in the defense. Ramaj has moved the fleet under the command of your father, Your Highness, to try to provide a buffer between a direct attack around Nastoyia’s forces and the Capital. The training fleet is backing up his fleet as well. But they could not take on the entire Rebel force. Nastoyia is poised at the crossroads so to speak. The Rebels cannot get to the Capital without going past her. The balance of the Star Forces are deployed or engaged in mop up operations in the outer rings. It would not be advantages to try to move them in mass to defend the Capital. That leaves our little corner of the Empire.”

Sobbash points to the display. “Magnify area two, four, five, the Hyde system and its links to the Capital come into detailed view. This could be an escape route for Nastoyia to rearm and refuel, or the Rebels to avoid a slaughter. We have enough resources to defend the Hyde system. We do not have enough to be offensive. The Lashkau and Basroil are yet untested. To depend on them to not only defend but possibly mount an offensive is fool hardy at best.” Spoor’s fist slams the table. “Commander I believe you owe me an apology and now.”

Sobbash stares Spoor down. “You move the Lashkau and prove to us all the it can truly fight then I’ll apologize. But to depend on those two untried ships for our survival is pure fool hardiness Admiral.” Sobbash stands her ground. Spoor looks disgusted.

“Admiral Spoor. Commander Sobbash is right.” Paveryua spoke up. “I’ve did the preliminary inspections on the Basroil after the Princess test flew it. She was lucky that she never went to one hundred percent power. There is a flaw in the power conduits. The design says they should handle the power, but in practice they will reliably handle about ninety percent power. There is not enough time to modify the Lashkau completely I can power the cannon and shields reliably but the engines are going to be limited to ninety percent which means chasing anyone for a long period of time will be very risky. We have completed the modifications to the Basroil. It’s size made it easier to readily refit. Your Highness it’s as ready as it will ever be, if we need it.”

“Engineer how long to finish the Lashkau?” Spoor sat quietly her hands on the table palms down. “Well I asked you a question.” Paveryua looks at Samson then back at Spoor. “To do it properly another two weeks. However once we start it will have to be moored and abandoned. There is a lot of replacement work and the crew will be in the road. The fastest way will be to remove the engine reactor and replace the power conduit. Any other way would waste time and cause more problems.” Spoor pushes herself to a standing position. “I see, then we fight, if need be, as we are. When this is done you’ll proceed with the refit at once! Come Kufadis! We are leaving.”

Sobbash interrupts her. “Admiral I still need your input on what I should recommend to Admiral Kenesh when she arrives. That was the point of this little gathering was it not?” Spoor returns to her seat. “Looks like for now we defend the Hyde system.” She looks at Noel. “Well Decca Commander?” Noel looks at Risch and then at Sobbash. “Defend the System.” Sobbash looks to Samson and Paveryua. Samson spoke. “Defend the system.” Finally she gazes to Jinto and Lafiel. “Well Your Highness?” Under the table Lafiel squeezes Jinto’s hand. “We defend the system.” Was her reply.

Spoor looks over at her. Lafiel read her mind. “Painiach listen the Basroil is no match for their fleet. Contrary to popular opinion, I do not have a death wish. Avenging my family name will have to wait, defending this place and all that lies beyond it has top priory. Don’t you agree?” Spoor a bit dejected nods in agreement. “Well Sobbash I think you know our opinion on the subject. Kenesh should listen. If she doesn’t then we will have to live with her decision, now won’t we?” Sobbash nods. “Admiral remember to talk with Atosuryua.” Spoor acknowledges Sobbash. With that Sobbash leaves the room, she’s been gone too long and Atosuryua will have questions.

*********
“Shall we go to the gym?” Lafiel asks. “I’d like a good work out.” Seelnay hands her a glass of Lina’s drink that she downs in one gulp. “How much longer do I have to drink this?” Seelnay looks at the bottle. “Another week maybe a bit more. You feeling any better Your Highness?” Lafiel smiles. “Actually Seelnay I do feel better all of me physically and mentally.” She nudges Jinto. “Wanna race?” Jinto looks at her. “If we do that then you won’t need the tread mill.” She smiles. “You’re right Jinto. We’ll just need the hot tub.” Noel’s eyes lit up. “Hot tub!” She grabs Risch’s arm and they dart out the door. ”See Ya!” Lafiel grabs Jinto. “Lets go she’s not going to beat us!” They dart out of the room.

Kufadis looked at Spoor. “You’re not having any strange ideas are you Admiral.” Spoor smiles. “No Kufadis they are doing us a favor.” Kufadis looks at her, “Favor?” Spoor smiles. I shut the tubs off before I left last night. They will have a cold surprise awaiting them.” Kufadis rises and extends a hand. “Admiral shall we go then. If we move just a bit closer we should be able to hear them.” Spoor rises. “Thank you for breakfast we will be in touch.” They leave. Samson, Seelnay and Paveryua sit at the table looking at each other. Seelnay finally speaks. “The Princess won’t be happy. She despises cold water.” Paveryua looks at the time. “Think I need to be going too.” He leaves Samson follows him and Seelnay cleans up. Finished she looks around her. “I guess they worked everything out, they seemed pretty happy.” She left the room and the building, once outside in the distance Lafiel’s voice could be heard it was not a happy sound.

*********
They ran as a group through the depot. They were like children going to a great adventure. Arriving at the gym first Jinto and Lafiel started changing. Noel and Risch were a step behind them. Noel changed quicker and dove into the tub. “It’s freezing cold.” She screamed. But it was too late for Lafiel she was already past the point of no return. Her body hit the icy water and her entire nervous system screamed. “Jinto come and get me out of here.”

The guys had changed a little slower than the girls had. They stood with towels ready and Risch turns on both tubs. Noel decided to tough it out. She waited for the tub to warm up. Seeing this Lafiel enters the water again. “If you can do it. I can do it!” A shivering Lafiel exclaims. Noel sat in the water and smiles it was finally getting to a temperature close to her liking. “You look cold Lafiel. You don’t need to stay in here.” Lafiel was shivering but her stubbornness kept her planted in the tub. ”It’s not all that bad Noel. In fact I find it invigorating.” The tub temperatures were rising ever so slowly.

Jinto and Risch decided that watching was the best course of action for now. “So what do you think Kenesh will say?” Jinto glances around. “Well she’ll probably have a fit over the modification to the ships. Then I’m sure Atosuryua will have something to say. Lets see she’s not seen Lafiel in a while. I believe she is now taller than Kenesh is. All in all it should prove to be an interesting visit.” The tub temperatures were still rising. Noel and Lafiel were becoming more relaxed.

“Jinto, I have a question? What is it with those two women we love? They seem to be in a constant competition? I mean you and I would have checked the tub temperatures before we got in. Those two just leapt in. Instead of cold it could have been short of boiling. I wonder who turned these tub off?” Risch looks at the sign in sheet. “Hey Jinto look!’ He held the clipboard to Jinto’s face. “Looks like somebody has had the last laugh. It’s Kufadis I tell you. He’s made her evil.” The voices from the tub had calmed down considerately. “Jinto the water is fine are you and Risch going to join us soon?”

They look at each other. “You think the time is right?” Jinto nods. They gently slip into the tub. “Temperature is about right don’t you think.” Risch nods. “Hey Lafiel. We know who set the tubs up like this.” Lafiel is listening intently “Well who did it?” they both said in unison. “Admiral Spoor did it.” Noel looks across at Lafiel. “You had to get her upset now didn’t you? I wonder how many other little surprises she has planned for you?” Lafiel laughs. “I guess I had it coming to me. Sorry you got involved too Noel.” They spent the rest of the time enjoying the tub.

Out of the tub, dried off and changed they went their separate ways. Now it was time to wait for Admiral Kenesh to arrive. They might as well rest up and enjoy the little bit of peace that remained. Jinto and Lafiel saw Seelnay she was in a hurry. “Going somewhere Seelnay?” Jinto asked. “Oh Count Hyde, Princess, yes I’m headed for the planet Martine another food run care to come along?” Seelnay grew pale the words were already spoken. “Excuse me Count Hyde I’ve made a terrible mistake.”

Jinto flinched. Then he realized this might be a learning experience for Lafiel. “It’s alright Seelnay I know you weren’t being mean. Would you mind taking Lafiel to the surface?” He turns to Lafiel. “It’s a chance to see my home world up close. Probably once in a lifetime.” Lafiel nods her head and hugs Jinto. “One thing Your Highness. You cannot leave the shuttle. Where we land is so beautiful you can see it all from the ship. However you must promise me you will not leave the ship.” Lafiel agrees to the conditions. They bid Jinto farewell and depart in the shuttle. Jinto watches as they leave the depot. “Enjoy yourself Lafiel. See what I’m missing in life and understand how really important you are to me.” He rolls his creunoc to his lips. “Lina. They are on their way. Take good care of them.” The message was acknowledged. Jinto decides to wait for their return. It was four hours later. His creunoc calls to him again.

“Jinto are you there?” He answers Lina. “They just left. It went very well. Although you failed to inform me she has grown. I still believe the present she has will fit her. Be safe my son.” It ends as abruptly as it had started. Jinto made his way to the loading dock in time to see them arrive. The door opens and Lafiel bolts into his arms. “Jinto I never knew any place could be so beautiful. I though our planet was beautiful but compared to Martine it pales. Lina met us. She gave me a dress to wear. Seelnay landed by the Enchanted Forest and Lina gave me a fast tour. Then Seelnay flew low over the planet before we left. Lina was so wonderful Jinto. I know why you miss her so.” Lafiel chattered away for almost an hour before she finally stopped. In that time Seelnay had prepared dinner. They had dinner and returned to their quarters.

*********
Lafiel had an idea. She removed the link from her luggage sat it on the table and starts it running. “Jinto while it’s fresh in my mind do you want to see what I saw?” Normally Jinto would have objected. But this time he was very open to the idea. “Before you show me what you saw have you looked at the dress?” Lafiel grabs the box. “I glanced at it. Seelnay was taken by it. Maybe I should look closer.” She removes the pale blue dress from the box. “Jinto it’s beautiful and it’s so fancy. Is it a formal gown? It must be. It’s too beautiful for everyday wear” She opens the door to the closet and stand in front of the mirror attached to the inside of the door. Holding the dress in front of her she is taken by its simple beauty and elegance. She turns to face Jinto he is standing facing her tears are running down his cheeks. “Jinto what is it? Why the tears?”

Jinto smiles and wipes the tears from his eyes. “It’s looks great and it will look great on you. It is a very special occasion dress. Usually worn once a generation. Why don’t you show me what you saw and after we are done I’ll explain the dress to you.” Lafiel set the dress carefully back in the box and hooks up their headbands. The scene becomes the landing pad at the edge of the forests. It is breathtakingly beautiful. Lafiel’s eyes see what Jinto has only had fond memories of. The quick tour complete he sees the low pass made over the forest by the shuttle. Lafiel goes to turn off the device Jinto stops her.

Let me explain the dress. He clears his mind. The picture of a woman wearing the dress comes into view. There is a very handsome gentleman standing next to her. Lafiel recognizes the man as Jinto’s father. Then the woman is his mother. She is holding a bouquet of flowers. They both look very happy.

Jinto then goes to his memories. Lafiel sees a service of some sort being preformed. It is lavish and detailed. Two people dressed very much like Jinto’s parents were standing in front of an official looking person. They were speaking to each other, then, they kiss and leave the building. Lafiel sat confused for but a moment, then a smile came across her face.

“That was a wedding I just witnessed. Which means that it is a wedding dress. It’s your mothers wedding dress is it not? Jinto nods. “Why would Lina give me your mothers wedding dress?” She looks around. “Wait a minute! Jinto Lynn, are you trying to tell me something?” Jinto smiles. “It depends on how you feel about things. Whether you want a totally Abh existence or a mixture of cultures. I guess if you don’t use it our daughter might?”

Lafiel gets a very solemn look. “Jinto I’ve read enough books are you suggesting that we get married?” Jinto continues to smile. “Wait. There was a part in the book about. Jinto are you proposing to me?”

Jinto goes to one knee and faces Lafiel. “Lafiel I’ve always wanted to show you my home and for you to see the beauty of it. I was hoping we could live there but that was not to be. My plan was to take you to the forest and show you all of its beauty and tell you that it paled in comparison to your beauty, my love.”

“I know that the Abh do not wed or mate for life. If you are truly released from your destiny, then Lafiel Ablïarsec, will you marry me and become my companion for life?”

Lafiel stood there in complete shock. She was stunned. Was this a dream? Never would she have thought that any words like those would ever be spoken to her. She had to answer him. She had to think. Why wouldn’t the words come to her lips? Why so many doubts why now? Finally after what seemed like an eternity she spoke…

"Ah! You don't know my name?
Its very simple, Lafiel you shall say.
In return I'd like to call you Jinto."
